Pattern: Hocus Pocus Cowl

hocus_pocus_wonderfallz

I hope everyone has been having a Happy Halloween. Anyone running afoul of the Sanderson Sisters, well, you are on your own!  But back to the Hocus Pocus cowl.  Wonderfallz on Raverly the designer behind Thea Eschliman Designs has another great pattern.  The Hocus Pocus cowl. A very fitting design for the season.  And the drop in temperature.

The pattern is available for purchase on Raverly, and intrepid knitters have converted the pattern into hats, gloves, and bags.

Hello From Grace and Crocheted Hobbit Feet

Grace as EowynHello fellow geeky crafters! I’m new to the GeekCrafts family, and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Grace and I’ll be posting on Fridays. I currently reside in Colorado with my husband, Jim, and our cat, Pepper Potts. My first true geek love is Lord of the Rings and the works of Tolkien in general (Roverandom, anyone?), as you can see from my attempt at an Eowyn costume here. I also love dragons, Disney, and Doctor Who, and my husband is attempting to teach me about Star Trek and X-Files. I am currently working on a TARDIS blanket, trying to make a Galadriel costume for Halloween/the next Hobbit movie premiere, attempting a steampunk version of Commander Lt. Riker for my husband, and hopefully making a steampunk Tinkerbell costume for myself in time for the next Anomaly Con.

Today, I’ll be showing one of my own tutorials that I am very proud of. When the Hobbit premiere rolled around last December, I knew I had to go in costume. I found a nice pattern for a skirt and bodice, but couldn’t find any hobbit feet that I liked. Having learned how to crochet all of three days beforehand, I decided to try and crochet my own hobbit feet using a crocheted sock tutorial video I found online. And, lo and behold, it worked!

Crocheted Hobbit Feet

Ta da!

On my blog, HappilyGrim (the only portmanteau of Grace and Jim that worked), I try and give directions both in stitches, and in relation to what part of the slipper is being created (i.e., 10 stitches, or however many to cover the tips of your toes). Let me know if you have any questions, and have fun making hairy hobbity feet!

A Little Bit of Summertime Cosplay

I love the amount of work and care that goes into a good cosplayer’s costume, even more so when it’s genderbending the original character. There’s a lot of stuff to be taken into consideration when you’re turning Tonto, for example, into a female.

“Baker Jenny Rae of Lil Rae Cupcakes is a huge Johnny Depp fan who has an impressive collection of handmade aprons that she wears at her shop. When she saw Depp as Tonto in the upcoming The Lone Ranger film, she decided to make an apron in his honor, but went a step further and even made a headpiece and donned his makeup.” BTW, Jenny Rae mentioned on her FB page, linked above, that she’s going to see “The Lone Ranger” on the Disney lot in Burbank. Pretty cool!

Piranha Plant Papercut

piranha plant papercut

Your plants either drown or die of thirst, but you still yearn for some nature in your living room? I know what you mean. My flowers in Plants versus Zombies hate me.

Now, paper might not be the same as roots and leafs, but at least it’s made of trees! So why not decorate your wall with this Super Mario Brothers papercut silhouette? You’d rather have real foliage? Katrina Mason sells many pieces of art from Disney, video games and movies at her Etsy shop CuttingPixels.

Engraved Glasses

I’ve always loved the look of engraved glasses. Truthfully, I blame it on McDonalds and the glasses that they gave out for a Disney anniversary. I think it’s a really classy way of showing your geeky side, while still remaining functional.

Over at PlacidRain on Etsy, they’ve made this awesome idea and turned into a shop of amazing art. Custom glass fanart, ranging from Moogles and Chocobos to Super Mario to Pokemon, even Totoro. As I scroll through this shop I have a meme in my head shouting “BUY ALL OF THE GLASSES!!!!”

Beast’s Rose

Beauty and the Beast is quite clearly the booknerd’s Disney film of choice, if for nothing more than the scene where he gives her a library. Best present ever. Plus (factoid of the week) the music is by the same guys who wrote Little Shop of Horrors.  Awesome, right?

FongTrooper over at the Replica Props Forum has made this amazing replica of the floating rose that acts as The Beast’s countdown timer. It’s a pretty simple make – an artificial rose suspended by invisible thread inside a bell jar, but it’s a lovely idea for a gift.
