New Admin’s Log, February 27th. Caitie Davis presiding :)

Hello, all! My name is Caitie, and I’ll be comin’ atcha every Monday afternoon here on Geek Crafts! Huzzah! I can’t wait to toss a bunch of nerdy embroidery, needle felt, perler bead, cross stitch, and baked good crafts your way. Tutorials, etsy round-ups, DIY stuff. The stuff of geek craft life! I can’t wait, I really can’t.

Here’s a little bit about me…

I’m a huge card game/tabletop nerd. HUGE! I play Magic: The Gathering every Friday night at Friday Night Magic (FNM), I love Munchkin, Carcassone, Settlers of Catan, and the traditional board games (Apples to Apples, Trivial Pursuit, etc.). I also love Dungeons & Dragons- I’m always a healer!
I love video games. I have Portal tattoos behind my ears, and I absolutely adore everything that Valve has every put out. Half-Life 2 is probably my favorite game of all-time, though child me would probably be upset knowing I didn’t say “Ocarina of Time” for that one. Yikes! I love RPGs and all that jazz. First person shooters aren’t my favorite but, if I had to choose one, I would pick Battlefield. Halo vs Call of Duty? P’shaw. Not for me!
I am a writer- I’ve been in art school since 6th grade for creative writing. Right now I’m pursuing an English degree, and eventually I’ll get my CW degree. Yippee! I cannot wait to starve for the rest of my life. I mean that. Anyway, I mostly write poetry & super short stories- but, I am actually working on a book right now. It’s tiring stuff!
I love to read. Sci-fi, Fantasy, and the Classics (Steinbeck, Hemingway, Faulkner, Kerouac…) are the things I live for. Right now, I’m reading through Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. It is pretty fantastic thus far! I am always reminding myself to “focus on the void”… :) And, of course, I am a huge Harry Potter nerd. I think that if you aren’t one, I will have a hard time relating to you. Haha! Just kidding. Or am I?

Taft
Here is my Persian cat, William Taft!

As for the age old question- Star Trek vs. Star Wars? I answer like Zoidberg… why not both?? I love Star Trek, and I love Star Wars. Sorry, I won’t pick! I love them both far too much. I am currently working my way through Sherlock, and then I will take on… Dr. Who. Yeah, that’s right, I haven’t seen Dr. Who. I know. I’m sorry. But I PROMISE, I’m working on it! I work at a movie store, so I have access to basically every DVD known to man. I will get there soon. I love horror, indie, sci-fi, musicals, and black comedies as far as movies go.

I live with my boyfriend Tyler and my orange flat-faced Persian cat, Taft. We all love basically anything British  so we watch a lot of Peep Show, Jeeves & Wooster, That Mitchell and Webb Look, A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Top Gear, QI, etc. My boyfriend loves Stephen Fry more than he loves me sometimes, and I have come to accept that. When we aren’t being anti-social, we go out and drink craft beer, listen to records, and argue sociology with unsuspecting strangers. Poor blokes.

I have probably gone on too long, now. I hope you all will tune in on Monday. In the meantime you can catch me on instagram at @notcaitiedavis. I’ll list my blog and Etsy shop a little later, they are down for the moment. I’ll leave you with an awesome embroidery hoop done by Etsy user StitchCulture! It’s down below there. She is one of my favorites on Etsy for embroidered goodness. Go look around her shop and enjoy.

Catch ya on Monday! And if your name is Carl… stay in the house. Or the jail. Just… stay put.

D&D Monster Man, and D12 Dice Bag pattern

While clicking around on StumbleUpon, my son recently stumbled upon this little beauty – a wonderfully entertaining 4-1/2 minute video of Brad Knight, the self-proclaimed D&D Monster Man. He does impressions of what he imagines Dungeons & Dragons monsters sound like. I certainly can’t refute him.

While imaginative, his impression talent is not very crafty, so I dug up a D&D-inspired craft to share, complete with tutorial: the d12 Handbag (of Holding) from Evil Mad Scientist Labs.

Perfect for an impromptu RPG session, or a night on the town, this DIY dodecahedron will make you the envy of geeks and fashionistas alike.

Lucky and Lovable

I’m not sure if The Neverending Story is truly geeky or just beloved by children of the ’80s, but dragons are inherently a bit geeky, no? At least that’s my reasoning behind sharing this Falcor [sic] the Luck Dragon necklace. Also: It’s flat-out adorable. As are some of the other goodies in Rude & Reckless’ Etsy shop—this Monocled Octopus Necklace is particularly enchanting.

Friday Roundup: The year of the dragon

It is the year of the dragon, and as a recently birthday’ed fire dragon myself, I wanted to delve into all things dragon for this week’s round-up. First up from Olga Farberovao, I bring you this touching father-son moment. Check out this firey poppa welcoming his new addition:

This made-to-order toy was crocheted out of mohair yarn. His eyes, nostrils are needle felted. The egg is made by wet felting wool.

Don’t Mess with the Dragon!

One of my favorite fantasy creatures, the dragon, gets such a bad rap. So they burn villages, eat fair maidens and have magical powers, does that them bad? For centuries, knights have attacked them with lances, magicians have cast a myriad of spells, and random people with pitchforks have attacked the dragon’s lair. I think that if I was constantly harassed by human kind, I would be cranky too.  Maybe our Society’s perspective is all wrong.  Maybe the Dragon just wants some understanding!  To quote the Most Knowledgeable Hagrid, “They’re seriously misunderstood Dragons.” We should all keep our minds open to the good that Dragons can do.

For example, how about a dragon made out of recyclable materials!

This is a sculpture was created by~toge over on DeviantArt using only plastic kitchen utensils and hot glue.  It proves that they can be just as concerned about our environment as we are.  We need more positive press about dragons so that our society no longer discriminates against these reptiles! Remember, dragons want love and respect too!

When Worlds Collide

When Worlds Collide

Years ago, a fifth grader walks into her local library and finds a new series about dragonriders on a planet named Pern.

Some years later, another young girl half a world away discovers a series about a planet named Discworld.

Neither knew at the time that these two worlds were on a collision course with each other and would one day meet up in the wizarding world of Harry Potter but they did. That is where I met Muggs and for the past few years have shared back and forth on our respective favorite fandoms. Recently, she began reading Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series and, in return, I began reading Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. We’re both hooked.

Of course, being a crafter, and a geek crafter at heart, I began searching for patterns and crafts related to the new series and found some. One of my favorites is the adorable Swamp Dragon, foun which grows to a length of two feet, especially in the books Guards! Guards! and Men at Arms.

Steph Conley has created a “lifesize” knit pattern for these dragons. I introduce you to Flynn the Swamp Dragon.

Knit in worsted weight yarn, he doesn’t take much yarn do to as she made hers from recycled sweater yarn. A seven inch zipper is sewn into his stomach to turn this into a nice hiding place for special things.

You can find more Discworld crafty goodness on her blog.
