Captain America Clothing Crafts

Even though Captain America 3 isn’t scheduled to come out until 2016, and Avengers: Age of Ultron is coming out in May, Steve Rogers would say that every day is a good day for Truth, Honor, and Patriotism!

If you’d like to display your love for Captain America, there are several fashionable DIYs for you to do so!

First, Comm Couture created a freedom trifecta of Cap Pacs for herself and her two sons, in less than one day! She used some different colored felt , some straps, and voila!

Deviantart user AcidDaisy took the stars and stripes to a whole new level with her fashionable Captain America Dress. She also created an incredibly helpful tutorial on how to make your own as well!

Lastly, if you’re looking for a more subtle homage, Tumblr user Tehnakki came up with a beautiful floral emblem of Cap’s Shield to decorate her sweatshirt with, making it a wonderful example of geek chic. She’s posted the pattern shapes she used, as well as a pdf with detailed instructions for everyone who’d like to try it themselves.

Hopefully that was enough of the First Avenger for you! Happy crafting!

Friday Round-Up: Fish with Feet

So, this week’s Friday Round-Up celebrates one of my heroes, Darwin. The well-known two legged take on the ichthys symbol  is used by fans of evolution (can a scientific theory have fans? Does it matter if it does or not? It’s popularity’s kinda irrelevant; it’s still true…). Darwin Fish (Or Tonys, as all good Feeters know) are rough depictions of Ichyostega, the remains of which are important transitional fossils between tetrapods and fish, since they have a tail and gulls akin to fish but amphibian style skull and limbs.

So, I present to you my ten favourite crafts in honour of both Darwin and Tony…

Beaded Tom Baker “Scarf”

More Doctor Who goodness! I love the fourth Doctor’s (Tom Baker) Scarf. But I can’t knit and all of the replicas available on etsy are out of my price range. But this is brilliant: a beaded scarf necklace! España Sheriff made this for a friend, who was getting ready for her first Gallifrey One convention (cosplaying as Tom Baker, of course). She used 15/0 Toho rounds, in a combination of matte, metallic and transparent finishes.

A lot of the comments on the post at Crafty_Tardis said that they loved that it was “stealth geek chic”: to geeks it’s instantly identifiable and when you see one there’s no question that the wearer is a Whovian, but to everyone else it’s just a really cute necklace. Either way, I want one!

Lego Creations from Folded Fancy

Lego Folded FancyNeed a Star Wars Lego wedding cake topper for your geeky wedding? Or, want to show your sweetie how special they are with a Lego flower bouquet that’ll never wilt?

Well, look no further than Folded Fancy Creations! Each Lego model is made by the talented Mariann Asanuma, the world’s first female freelance Lego artist.

Mariann is one of my crafty heroes, and (full disclosure) one of my high school friends. She worked her way up to Master Model Builder at LEGOLAND California (the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign in Miniland is her handiwork), before striking out on her own. Now, she builds custom models, writes how-to Lego books, and manages Folded Fancy.

If you just want a little touch of Lego in your life, she also makes adorable wee magnets (like these Pac-Man magnets), and geek chic jewelry out of rare Lego tiles.

With that, my friends, my time at Geek Crafts has come to an end. I love writing for this wonderful blog, but, with the upcoming release of my first comic book project, it’s time for me to devote myself completely to my fiction and filmmaking. Yeep! I’m making the big leap. So, I’ll still be in the geek loop, just on the other side of it.

Thank you for reading my posts, and for all the lovely comments. Keep creating, and I’ll catch you on the flip side!

Geekily Yours,
Sherezada

Synthetic Division Out Of Time

Remember a long, long time ago, when we interviewed author Shawn Decker about his book My Pet Virus? Well, the thing about Shawn is he is a geek chic trifecta. In addition to writing an amazing memoir he is also a member of Synthetic Division (how’s that for a geeky band name?), and their latest video, Out of Time, was too good not to share. Yes, those are Lego Men, in a teeny Playmobil hospital. Yes, that is synth pop. Yes their band is named after math. Yes, it is pure, golden fried awesome!
