Tutorial: Needle Felted Solar System Mobile

Needle Felted Solar System

I’ve never actually tried needle felting myself, but this is such a wonderful use of the craft that I am definitely going to give it a go sometime. Check out this Needle Felted Solar System Mobile over on It’s a Knit House.

There’s a set of instructions for making your own Needle Felted Solar System Mobile. Although obviously, it’s not quite to scale. If you made a 2 inch diammeter version of the Earth in a scale model, the Sun would have to be 18 feet across, and you’d need 22 miles to fit the whole thing in, including orbits (or 29 miles if you want to include Pluto).

But for illustrative purposes this is an awesome geeky science craft! I want one.

Tutorial: Geeky Photography with Flash Stencils

Help! My house is being Space Invaded!

Lounge Space Invaders

Alright it isn’t – it’s just clever camera trickery in the form of flash stencilling. But it’s a pretty neat effect and a lot of fun, so I thought I’d share with you how it can be done.

You will need:

  • A camera capable of taking long exposures (30 seconds is about right)
  • A tripod or stable surface
  • An external flash (or a very bright torch)
  • A box
  • Card
  • Craft knife and cutting tools
  • Black tape
  • White paper

Tutorial: Glowing USB Magic Potion

usb-mana-potion-on
You know those glowing potions you pick up in many fantasy video games (hopefully right before a boss fight)? This is a quick project that makes a glowing, USB-powered potion that looks great at your cubicle/desk/office and shows off your geekiness. Unfortunately, no matter what I tried, I could not take a picture that does this justice. It looks amazing in person though, trust me – it’s very blue and bright.

Backstory: when I first got my blue Scion xA, one of the first things I did was swapped out all the dash lights for blue LEDs and installed blue LEDs under the cupholders so it would make any translucent beverage container glow bright blue. When I saw these mana potions at ThinkGeek, I immediately thought those would look cool if they similarly glowed blue. So, this is how I did it…

Killer Candy tutorial

Kryptonite Candy

OK, so this candy isn’t really “killer” – unless you’re Superman. It looks pretty cool, right? I love how it appears to glow, even in normal light.

I also love that the process is also a bit of a science experiment, because you use vitamin B2, which apparently has fluorescent properties.

Tutorial Tuesday: TARDIS Bookcase!

Check out this awesome bookcase tutorial from Alantronics!

It’s actually mind blowingly simple to do, make one for you little boy/girl’s room to promote literacy (or for me, make a full sized one for the Husb0t to store all his Dr Who DVD’s in… )

You could even be really clever and add a door for the full ‘TARDIS effect…

Dr. Who TARDIS in a Wormhole Afghan Tutorial

So, if you are a die-hard crocheter, you start thinking about Christmas presents in the summer.  You just have to.  I have a Dr. Who loving pal in my life, and I came across this great afghan by  Craftster user Brackish Potato.  It is inspired by the opening scene from Dr. Who where the TARDIS is floating through the time warp/wormhole thingie.

What a great idea right?  The afghan looks like it would work up pretty quickly since it’s just a repeating pattern.
