Grandpa Makes Death Star Fire Pit for His Grandkids for Christmas

fire pit

I may have bronchitis and laryngitis so I can’t verbally speak, but I’ve the internet to be able to talk to all of you! First up this morning, this awesome Death Star fire pit was made by a 84-year-old metalworker, on request, for his grandkids for Christmas. The pit was made by welding together two defective propane tank ends and then cutting out the excess metal to create the iconic space station.

It was originally posted over at Reddit by Bandia5309. And if you need any more proof as to how awesome this grandpa is, check THIS out: he is selling them on Etsy now! You can get your very own fully operational Death Star fire pit for only $1,600 from Farmington, NM. This custom designed back yard fire pit is hand drawn and cut from steel globes measuring either 30 or 37 1/2 inches in diameter (buyer’s choice).

Jennifer’s grandpa ROCKS!

Geek Out With Free Hand Embroidery Patterns and Tutorials

ParanoidHandEmbroideryQuote

This year, don’t just let your geek flag fly. Hand embroider that geek flag with your favorite quote or character.

If you enjoy the Dresden Files, you’ll love this free hand embroidery pattern designed by Jennifer from Sew Hooked. Check out her blog and Craftsy store for more original pattern designs.

SherlockEmbroideryPattern

I’m totally Sher-locked myself, so this next free hand embroidery pattern by Jordan F (username: dozmuffinxc), as found on FandomStiches.com is something I’m definitely going to try.

HandEmbroideryandPatternMakingTutorial

The only thing is, I look at these fun patterns and can’t help but wonder, how do you make a quote or line drawing into an embroidery pattern. I did a little digging and found this awesome tutorial on making your own hand embroidery design from Angel and Amy on their blog Tada! Creations.

CrayonTintingTutorial

And then I found another tutorial on color tinting your embroidery using crayons and an iron. The technique is so easy, but the impact of the final product packs a real wallop. I found this tutorial on Urban Threads, and it’s got great step-by-step instructions with pictures.

Star Wars BB-8 Ornament

bb8

Just one little Christmas craft before the ornaments and decorations are put away: BB-8, the rolling volleyball-like droid from the upcoming, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Here it is, in all it’s Styrofoam ball and glitter glory. Looks cute, but I know in our house with a new cat, this wouldn’t have made it through the first night of being on the tree.

It was posted about two weeks before Christmas to Imgur, by someone who made it for their first homemade Christmas decoration exchange. There wasn’t any information available as to whether or not the maker actually made an extra one for him/herself to keep.

The Vanilla Studio – Dinosaur Menorahs

It’s time for Hanukkah! And what says Hanukkah more than a metallic painted toy dinosaur?

Lisa Pierce of The Vanilla Studio makes hand crafted menorahs from plastic prehistoric animal toys.

In silver or gold tone, these menorahs are fancy, shiny, and downright fun. Lisa also offers candle holders for your year-round lighting needs. And, according to Lisa’s Etsy profile, it sounds like more exciting projects are underway.

We created The Vanilla Studio years ago as an empty container to hold our creative dreams and endeavors. It’s currently a home for a menagerie of hand-crafted animal menorahs. Stay tuned to see what else we put in the box!

Gift A Geek: Tea! Just What The Doctor Ordered

Tea! That’s all I needed. A good cup of tea. A superheated infusion of free radicals and tannin. Just the thing for heating the synapses.

15eb_doctor_who_tardis_tea_infuserDid you think I had a different Doctor in mind? I mean there are 12 to choose from.

The Tardis Tea Infuser is available at Think Geek  But to get to the actual Tea. We have so many choices. Like tea itself wasn’t geeky enough there are fandom blends to make you happy.

Fandom Blend Tea Sets from Adagio Tea  Firefly, Teen Wolf, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who…pick a sampler blend for $19. If there’s a fandom or three you want to try/gift.

Tea and Absinthe   Doctor Who teas and Tea, Earl Grey Hot.  They also have a few tea accessories.

Tea and Other Things – Butterbeer and Chocolate Frog flavored tea need I say more?

And of course you will need something to make this tea in:

serenity-teapot_secondchanceceramics

I feel like there is a degree of Serenity placing those words on a teapot.

And One would be remiss to not provide something to drink the tea from. I pity the fool without a tea mug.

mrtea_mugoos

Build the geekest tea set you can, and go off and spread tea among the masses.  All of the shops linked above, have a few other choices for mug, for pot, for infuser, and of course for Tea.

Geek out for the Holidays with Ornaments

ZombieGingerbreadMan
Zombie Gingerbread Man Ornament by My Zombie Friends on Etsy, credit Adrienne Jones.

To combat holiday stress, I like to decorate with as much geek-tastic awesomeness as I can create and find.  Things like zombie gingerbread men, Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtle ornaments, and 8-bit fireplaces always make me smile.  Why not have a geeky holiday this year and let Geek Crafts give you a head start with some fun, easy tutorials and even a gift idea or two.

Ornaments!

TMNTOrnamentsDIYFor the turtle lover, you’ve got to take a look at The Whoot’s DIY Ninja Turtles. My nephews love the Turtles, and this is the sort of craft you could do with little boys (and plenty of supervision!).

DIYCharacterChristmasOrnaments

My nephews are also in love with the Minions. This awesome DIY features other great fandom character ideas, like Sesame Street and Monsters Inc too.

MuppetOrnamentsDIYThese Muppet ornaments are super easy to make too, thanks to the great tutorial from Meg on Happy Looks Good on You. These little cuties were inspired by her original tutorial on making superhero ornaments.

LegoOrnamentDIY

Sarah Dees from FrugalFun4Boys.com has some fun Lego ornament ideas (good for girls too!).

Geeky Decor Fun

GeekDIYWreath

Kat and Cam from Our Nerd Home has a some great ideas for decorating the home for the holidays, including this Wreath DIY made from foam core! I bet craft foam would work great too.  Plus, you could totally customize this to all of your own favorite fandom images.

I have to share their 8-bit fireplace DIY too.  This is too awesome for words, and incredibly easy to do.  It’s warm and cozy, don’t you think?

8-bitFireplaceDIY

This last decor DIY is not for the faint of heart, but this Embroidery tutorial from Jessica (from Miniature Rhino) on Design Sponge takes you step-by-step through making this beautiful embroidered constellation table runner.  Perhaps not strictly a holiday theme, I think it lends itself well to any winter themed decor you’ve got going on in your home.
