Super-size Your D20

Giant Metallic D20

For Valentine’s Day, some people dream of getting a sparkly, shiny something. Here’s a geeky version – a giant metallic d20 (20-sided die, for the role-playing game un-initiated).

Kat and Cam at Our Nerd Home have rolled up a quick tutorial for you on how to make your own d20 using a piece of ~20″x20″ cardboard (I love how they used cardboard from a Lord of the Rings set of Legos they just happened to have laying around!)

My son’s 20th birthday is this week, so this could be just about the perfect present for me to make for him.

In the post, Kat/Cam mention that they left the numbers off the die to make it a more subtle decor item. If you make this, will you add numbers, or no?

Robot Love

Luvbot

How about a little robot love for Valentine’s Day? With just under a month to go, you have just enough time to whip up something for your geeky sweetheart (or yourself!)

I found several cute robot projects so I thought I would do a mini round-up. First we have this adorable Luvbot (pictured above), a knitting pattern available from Anna at Mochimochiland.

Next we have the cute Cara the amigurumi robot from Rachel at CrochetSpot (subscribe to her newsletter to get the pattern for free, plus get a heads up on free patterns every week!)

Here’s an advanced-beginner cross-stitch project with a little binary code to say “I love you” in robot – Alicia Watkins has the cross-stitch kit all prepped for you on Etsy.

Then finally we have this fun crochet robot lovey blanket from Sarah at Repeat Crafter Me, so your favorite wee one can cozy up and dream of robot besties!

My Geeky Valentine: A Photoshop How-to

With Valentine’s Day mere days away, you may be wracking your brain for ideas for that perfect way to share how you feel with that special person(s) in your life. Well, who can say it better than you? Why not make your own Valentine? And since we’re of the geeky sort, why don’t we dial up some digital goodness in Photoshop, hmmm?

Star Trek Valentine from HowtoGeek.com  Firefly Valentine from HowtoGeek.com

HowtoGeek.com offers a full step-by-step tutorial on how to create your own customized geek valentine in Photoshop. They also have very thoughtfully put together 11 geeky valentine images, all zipped together and ready for you to download.  Pictured above are my two favorites from the set, but other images include references to the video game Portal, Star Wars, multi-sided dice, and Futurama.

Which one do you like best? Or what custom Valentine would you like to make?

Girly Gone Geek: Batman Princess, plus Star Wars Princess

Though we’re months away from Halloween, what’s Valentine’s Day without a little sweetness?  Behold, the Batman Princess.

Batman Princess

As spotted on Comics Alliance, this post comes from Donkey’s tumblr page. Alas, with no commentary. I would love to know the backstory behind the costume, and the neighbors’ reactions.

Donkey’s tumblr page also links to her flickr album, where I found this little beauty – not quite Princess Leia, but a Star Wars princess, nonetheless.

I love how the little girl is allowed to embrace both her geeky and girly selves. How have you helped young girls feel empowered about their love of geeky things?

“I Love You!” “I Know”

It’s that time again.
Valentine’s Day.

For those geeks who aren’t into the mushy gushy cards for your loved ones. Check out The Wallaroo Prints on Etsy for some excellent geeky Valentine’s Day cards.

With customizable QR codes in a lot of their cards, you can send special secret messages to that special someone. They have something for each geek. Is your signifigant other a Star Wars fan? Check out the Leia & Han card. Or maybe, Robots are their thing. Personally, I really like the “I Less than Three You A Lot”  the most.
