Hope Your Day is Shiny, Valentine!

Firefly Printable Valentines

What’s Valentine’s Day without a little bling? Or, at least, something…shiny?  As pinned by Kelsey Bennett, the TenthCrewMember over at FireflyFans posted some very shiny printable Firefly Valentines, so you can show some love to your favorite Browncoat.

But wait! There’s more! As in two more versions! I think the one from Jayne, thinking of his Valentine in his bunk, is my favorite.

Surely giving one of these Valentines will keep you from going to the Special Hell, right?

Desserts, Moustaches, Geekery

The tagline for Betty Turbo’s Etsy shop is: dessert, moustaches & muscles. Naturally, I approve. And that sort of sums up the content of her shop—her prints feature things like cupcakes and Parks & Rec’s furry-lipped Ron Swanson, and a variety of wrestlers. What this description omits, however, is the geekitude. (See, we got to the relevant part eventually.) Because, in addition to the aforementioned desserts, moustaches, and muscles, the shop contains awesomely geeky prints of Dr. Horrible quotes. And a Rupert Giles birthday card. And a Star Trek/Twin Peaks crossover. And the majorly spoiler-y Dammit Joss Whedon print, a visual compendium of major characters who died in Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and Dr. Horrible. (Don’t click if you don’t already know!)

Oh, and just because some of us (I’m not saying who) love him so very much, here’s a bonus card featuring everyone’s favorite undead Brit, Spike. I feel like this print would make a good inspirational message to tack up next to your mirror. Yes, Spike, go ahead and call me gorgeous every time I look in the mirror. I could deal with that…. Sorry, fantasy has taken over again.

Creative Cross-Stitch, Nerdy Needlework

While I haven’t really done any cross-stitching since about the age of eight, I can appreciate it as an arts-and-craft-form. Done properly and on an interesting subject, and it can be pretty damn impressive. (My mother once re-created this iconic La Dame aux Camelias Mucha poster with spectacular results. Just wish I had a photo to show you!) Anyway, tangent aside, I have found some awesome cross-stitch patterns on The Crafty Companion’s Etsy shop. She creates and sells patterns on an array of geek themes from Doctor Who to Game of Thrones, Firefly to Harry Potter. Very cute, not to mention reasonably priced. ($3 per pattern seems like a good deal to me!)

ROUNDUP: Big Bang Theory Crafts

We’ve been watching a lot of The Big Bang Theory episodes lately, so I thought a roundup of Big Bang crafts might be fun. The Internets did not disappoint me.

Big Bang Theory amigurumi crochet plushies

Craftyclogs posted this great amigurumi crochet set of Big Bang Theory characters at Craftster – complete with patterns!

Big Bang Theory cross-stitch

Doaflip posted this understated Big Bang Theory cross-stitch project on Craftster – an ode to Sheldon‘s Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock decision-making technique.

Big Bang Theory embroidered Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock flowchart

Another crazy-detailed needlework project – a flowchart of how Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock works. The crafter, mindboggld, took various pictures from the internet and imported them into Visio to create the chart. Clever girl, and extra geek points for using Visio! I would love to just get a poster print of this for my son! Click on the image above for close-ups!

Big Bang Theory Tile Coasters

Also from mindboggld, a set of Big Bang Theory tile coasters, with 3D molecule renderings she found at 3dchem.com. I love that it includes Lactose, since Leonard is lactose-intolerant. These were included in a swap with the above embroidery! I can’t believe she gave them away! Clever AND strong, that one!

Big Bang Theory plushies

A fun & cozy set of Big Bang Theory character plushies by cubosabio on Deviantart. As one of the project commentors said, “these rock more than Care Bears.”

Big Bang Theory Hako Clones

I hadn’t heard the term “hako clones” before seeing this Big Bang Theory paper toys project – I guess I always referred to them in my head as “paper cube heads”. Perhaps hako clones has more (ba)zing(a) to it. Bonus: the artist ditch-scrawls posted the templates in his papercraft gallery. Be sure to link over there, because he has lots of other geeky hako templates, like Luke Skywalker, Superman, Army of Darkness Ash, Highlander, & Dr. Who.

Big Bang Theory Bazinga earrings

While neither my son nor I are particularly crazy about Sheldon’s catch-phrase, I do like the simplicity of these “Bazinga” earrings by Just Duckie Designs on Etsy.

Big Bang Theory Sheldon clock

I’ve seen these photo clocks at Hobby Lobby & Archivers, but never would have thought of putting TV stills in the spaces, like this Sheldon clock by P.S. Francis. You could also intersperse pictures with character quotes. Might be kind of fun to have different clocks in each room, each highlighting a different show or movie. A Firefly clock, anyone?

So, all you BBT fans out there – what are some of your favorite quotes?

Another Newbie

Kaitlen with parasol

Hey everyone! I’m Kaitlen, another new addition to the Geek Crafts family. First of all, I have a confession: I’m awful at video games. My hand-eye coordination is such that I’m more likely to injure myself with the controller than I am to actually beat a board. That didn’t stop me from working at some gaming mags, though…and developing a slight Katamari addiction.

Fortunately, I make up for my lack of gaming talent with my excellent crafting skills. Screenprinting, sculpting, painting, jewelry-making—I’ve done it all. (Except knit, for some reason.) I also seem to devote quite a lot of time to consuming great geek fodder such as Firefly, Futurama, Doctor Who, Buffy, and, well, a lot more. And it’s always a pleasure to combine my geekiness with my craftiness, like when I sculpt Flying Spaghetti Monster Christmas ornaments or make necklaces out of circuit boards.

I also run the lifestyle/fashion/design blog pinup.punkrockelite.org. Oh, and feel free to follow me on Twitter at @kaitlen or @punkpinup. I’ll be back here on Thursday—see you then!

All Your Blogs Are Belong To Us.

Greetings fellow geek crafters. I am one of you newest bloggers to join the team. My name is Meghan and I am a geek, borderline nerd, with 4 kids, and I can’t stop crafting.  I make ridiculous things all the time, especially while watching cartoons.  Here is a sample of one my my most ambitious geek crafts, The Periodic Table of Elements in cross stitch. It took me a long time, like all the episodes of  Firefly, Futurama (twice) and Home Movies to complete. I designed the pattern using KXStitch, which is an awesome Linux program you must check out.

I’m super excited to scour the blog-o-sphere, in search of the greatest and geekiest crafts I can find, plus a few of my own, and to share them with you.

You can check out some of the other geeky things I’ve done on Instructables as Domestic_engineer.
