Link’s Awakening Sprite Stitch

links awakening sprite stitch

Crafting and 8-bit video games are a perfect combination. You can use beading, quilting, and of course, cross stitching to spark a bit of life in your favorite characters.

At Sprite Stitch, it’s all about geeky stitching. User caslzelda created this scene from Link’s Awakening. I love the colored heart in the center of the piece.

Introducing Beth Lynn!

bethlynnHello all!  I figured that since I’m brand new here, I may as well introduce myself!  (And introduce one of my most favorite projects, as well.)  I’ll be posting every Sunday afternoon, sharing my favorite geeky crafts from around the Internet!

As you may already have noticed, my name’s Beth Lynn.  I live with my husband Bryan, as well as four betta fish and a ridiculous collection of My Little Ponies, in beautiful Bloomington, Indiana.  I’m working on a second masters degree, in Information Science, and when I’m not nose deep in homework, I’m doing some sort of awesome geeky craft project!  I’ve been geeky as long as I can remember – I was an early reader (my mom claims I started reading before I was 2!), I’ve been playing video games since the tender age of five, and my mom was a Trekkie, so I’ve always been surrounded by wonderful nerdy things.  I’ve also been crafting since I was tiny, making tiny puppets when I was 8 and making doll clothes when I was 12.  As I got older, I started making bigger projects, like blankets, stuffed animals, and costumes!

Plush Zergling

Plush Zergling

I’m not much of a gamer but I did play a little bit of StarCraft once upon a time. I don’t recall the Zerg being quite this cuddly though! This cutie was created by Ange, in response to her nephew’s request for a Zergling of his very own. Ange decided to challenge herself to make one, even though she had never created a pattern for a plushie before. I think she’s succeeded beautifully! You can check out more of Ange’s clever crafts, of both the geeky and non-geeky variety, at her blog Crafty Distractions.

Instructable: Magnetic Pac-man Calendar

Pac-man Calendar

I love this submission we received. It’s such a simple idea that it’s one of those things you think “why haven’t I seen this before?”. The board is a metal plate, and all the pieces are magnetic so re-positionable for maximum retro-geek fun. I’m definitely planning on giving this a go. We get heaps of stupid free advertising fridge magnets in our mailbox, so perhaps this is a good way of upcycling them!

Head over to instructables.com for the How-To written by ChrysN. And don’t forget to post some pics below if you give this a try yourself! I’d love to see this applied to other games, such as a Space Invader calendar where each invader is a day of the month and you get to blow one up each morning – it would be especially nice to kill Mondays!

Nightmare Before Christmas Cake Balls

Nightmare Before Christmas Cake Balls

Geek-a-Bites author Nikki is a freelance illustrator from Austin, Texas. She gladly combines her love for pastry and pop culture. On her blog, you can find photographs of mouthwatering cookies, cake balls and fondant figures inspired by games, series and childhood classics.

Although I’d love to show every scrumptious craft she has created, I’m just going to feature the most recent one, a collection of Nightmare Before Christmas cake balls that Nikki submitted herself. Cake balls are a sort of oversized pop cakes without sticks, coated with chocolate, fondant or icing and often decorated. Yes, I never keep up with the baking trends either!

The balls look awfully detailed. They’d be perfect for a Halloween party or a birthday in my darker, teenage years. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but the tiny hills with the pumpkin patch and crescent moon are surely adorable!

Introducing Leah!

Introducing Leah

Hello internet! My name is Leah and I’m super excited to be one of the newbies on the Geek Crafts writing team! I’ll be popping in on Wednesday afternoons to share some of my favourite geeky-crafty finds. In fact, you may have noticed a couple of posts from me already, both of which featured awesome embroideries. I’m pretty smitten with textile art, so you can expect to see more of the same from me. I love anything crafty and clever (and geeky) though!

I’m originally from a wee town in Newfoundland, Canada, but am currently living in a big town in British Columbia, Canada. My home on the internet is Zombies Wearing Helmets, which is kind of a rambling record of my life, my crafts, and random things that make me lol. (Zombies fall into all three of those categories, so the title is actually quite appropriate.) I work in retail (yuck!) and volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation centre (yay!). I enjoy playing board games, birding, thrifting, and collecting all sorts of odd things – vintage craft books, dinosaurs, zombies, shells, rocks, owls and macramé. (Macramé owls are twice the fun!).

My geekiness is a mix of horror, sci-fi, and silliness. Here are some lists! (I really like lists!) My favourite monsters are zombies, more zombies, xenomorphs, triffids, Gill-Man, and Godzilla. My favourite TV shows are Red Dwarf, Star Trek, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, The Simpsons, Futurama and The Golden Girls.  My favourite comics are The Walking Dead, Chew, Calvin & Hobbes, and Mouse Guard. My favourite authors are Stephen King, Arthur C. Clarke, Anne Rice, and Neil Gaiman. My favourite superheros are Wolverine, The Hulk, and Spider-Man. My favourite movies are Night of the Living Dead, Dead-Alive, Jurassic Park, Alien, Predator, MST3K, Little Shop of Horrors (1986), The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Donnie Darko. I pretty much love any good/bad B movie, creature feature, or anything with Nicholas Cage. They all make me giggle!

Some of my crafty hobbies include embroidering, doodling, and blogging. I also love making random things, such as rhinestone encrusted flamingos and pine cone spiders. There are way too many project ideas floating around in my head but not nearly enough time to do them all. It’s so frustrating!

But enough about me! I’ll be back again on Wednesday with some more awesomeness to share with you all.
