Pattern: Hocus Pocus Cowl

hocus_pocus_wonderfallz

I hope everyone has been having a Happy Halloween. Anyone running afoul of the Sanderson Sisters, well, you are on your own!  But back to the Hocus Pocus cowl.  Wonderfallz on Raverly the designer behind Thea Eschliman Designs has another great pattern.  The Hocus Pocus cowl. A very fitting design for the season.  And the drop in temperature.

The pattern is available for purchase on Raverly, and intrepid knitters have converted the pattern into hats, gloves, and bags.

The “Wendy” Hat from “The Shining”

wendy
Heather Boggs of Madison, WI, might be better known as “Stitch Boom Bang,” from her blog of the same name. And if you read through her blog, you’ll learn she is a knitting fiend and possibly a huge fan of the movie, “The Shining.” So much so, that she has created a series of hats, based on patterns in the movie.

My favorite: the Wendy. Made of wool, it matches the shirt and jumper Shelly Duvall wore in one particular scene.

Heather said, that typically, she doesn’t believe in pompoms because they are a waste of yarn and a pain in the ass to make. And I have to admit, I thought this was a pretty good crafting quote if there ever was one: “However, Shelley Duvall deserves a pompom. According to Wikipedia, which is the goddamn gospel of the internet, Kubrick made Shelley Duvall and Jack Nicholson do 127 takes of the baseball bat scene. For that, she deserves more than a few stiff drinks, but all I can offer is a pompom.”

And if you need your very own Wendy-themed hat, it can be purchased from Heather’s Etsy shop, for $27.

Pattern: Madman with a Box

Cheeky_MD_Madman_with_a_Box_medium2

“Amy Pond, there’s something you better understand about me, ’cause it’s important and one day your life may depend on it… I am definitely a madman with a box!”

Over at Cheeky Monkey Designs this madman with a box can keep you extra warm. Reversible with worsted weight  yarn, this cowl would be a great addition to your wardrobe as you drift towards a cold star

Winter is fast approaching (be proud I didn’t say it). So why not get ready?

Pattern: Bat’leth Scarf

If you looked at that title and shook your head, you need more crafty Klingon’s in your life.  Over at The Giving Flower a design for a Bat’leth scarf is up for any enterprising knitter.

k_gintar_batleth

As the designer describes:  “Feeling a bit agressive? Need to let your inner Klingon free? Then this is just the scarf for you. It can be used in battle or just worn around your neck to keep you or your favorite Klingon warrior warm. With the silk and merino content and the holes formed by the grips, it flows gently around any Klingon or non-Klingon neck and won‘t get too warm. It also can come in handy in case a Klingon battle ensues. Don‘t be caught empty handed this winter!”

If that’s not a call to winter  battle. We all know the colder season is approaching for some of us. And its time for it to taste defeat.

Pattern: The Gates of Moria

Speak friend and enter. *Mellon, to be specific. The gates of Moria only show this entry way in moonlight and starlight.  Natalia  Moreva of Kulabra designs has designed these mittens that make me want to rethink my mitten ban (everything falls to the floor if I wear mittens). But these call to the Tolkien geek in me.

Moria_Moreva

So why not buy a copy of the pattern, and get knitting, and have a new pair of mittens for when the last Hobbit movie comes out?

Knit: Longer on the Outside Scarf

Unless you are/were one of the lucky ones to get into a World Tour Screening we are nearly at the premiere of a new season of Doctor Who. And  we know how I feel about having fitting crafts for the times right? So why not a re-imaging of the fourth doctor’s scarf with some illusion knitting to go with it.  Designer, Franklin Habit, has done just that.

Illusion/Shadow knitting is a technique, where using two colors and the basic knit stitches of Knit & Purl (seriously everything is built on those two guys). You use two colors and alternating your knit and purl stitches in pattern to create an image that is only visible at certain angles.  A fun way to have a surprise picture appear.  You can  see this effect in the scarf photo.

I’ve always been torn about making myself a 4th doctor scarf, but this? This will have to happen.  Head over to Raverly to purchase you own copy.
