Tis The Season…to Carve a Pumpkin

We are fast approaching the most wonderful time of the year….Halloween. Was there another time you were thinking of? I’m elbows deep in Styrofoam, hair, and glue trying to put the last bits of my costume together. And its almost time to bring out the box of Halloween decorations and start getting wild. This also means Pumpkin carving.

Over at Pink Raygun they have pumpkin carving templates for the nerd inside of us all and have already gotten started with a S.H.I.E.L.D. template.

Now who wouldn’t want that at your front door? There are sure to be plenty of Avengers coming for a visit. Possibly a few agents who think Tahiti is “a magical place”. You know the important things.

Crochet Superhero Shield blanket

Just in time for the premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., look at the fun Little Super Hero Blanket I found over at Lion Brand Yarn. Methinks it looks an awful lot like a Captain America shield, no?

Made with super bulky yarn and an “N” hook, I bet the pattern comes together pretty quickly. It would make a cool area rug or wall hanging for a kid’s room. Looks like you could also easily adapt it to a pillow, so it would be even more shield-like. What fun it would be to toss that around the room while pretending to save the world!

Anyone else looking forward to the new Joss Whedon series? We certainly are in our house!

PixelBrite: Programmable Pixel Light Panels

I’m getting used to being in total awe of some of the creativity, innovation, and pure genius displayed by people all over the Internet. The Geek collective especially seems to be amply blessed in all three departments, and this Instructable inspired by the wonderful Close Encounters of the Third Kind, posted by LeoneLabs, is no exception.

Admittedly, this isn’t your easy-to-recreate kind of geekcraft. You’ll need to get your head around electronics, microcontrollers, a bit of code, and it looks like you’d need a fair bit of patience to do all of the optimising and stuff that LeoneLabs goes into in the later steps. The components and materials also cost in the region of $550, but when you look at the results (and there are more awesome images to drool over if you follow the link), it looks like $550 well spent!

Personally, I have nothing further than GCSE (10th grade) electronics knowledge, and probably even less experience wth microcontrollers. So I will just sit back and marvel at the greatness that is PixelBrite, and wish I had one. Or four.

Knit Your Own Iron Man or War Machine

So in the US Iron Man 3 Comes out today. The perks of having a sibling in the hallowed halls of Marvel Comics means I saw it Monday (review here) and have red and gold armored Avenger crafts on the brain. Red is already one of may favorite colors, this may get dangerous.

I’ve started small with just some Iron dolls from Irene McCormick designs that can be found on Raverly a site that brings together, fiber artists of all standings and is free to join.

She also has designs up for Black Widow, Superman, Spiderman, and (BBC) Merlin. Clearly a regular Geek Crafter.

Introducing Marsha

Hey all, I will be your regular Friday morning blogger so I thought I would throw a bit of introduction at you first. I am a long time crafter, currently focused on knitting, spinning, and bead working to name a few things that I get my own crafty hands busy with. So I’m sure geeky knits will be prominent.

I tend to roam the internet as One Geek to Craft Them All, so that should point out at least one geeky place that is precious to me. I’m a fan of comics, fantasy, mythology, magic, cosplay, and plenty of others. To be more specific things that own a place in my heart, include but are not limited to, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Harry Dresden, Game of Thrones, Star Trek, Supernatural, Harry Potter; you know the basics. The list goes ever on.

In my day to day life I put my Master’s in Industrial/Organizational Psychology to use as Research Associate at a management consultant firm. I can feel your eyes glazing over from here so I’m gonna stop there. It’s for the best really. My closest friends only vaguely understand what I do. I like statistics, I play with them for a living, is close enough, really.

I’ll see everyone bright an early on Friday and until then I leave you with a handmade Tardis dress I have been trying to talk myself out of buying by Lex from Smarmy Clothes.
