An Introduction

jennysortinghat Hi everyone, I’m Jenny, and I’m a new writer on geek crafts, so I thought I should introduce myself before I make my first ‘proper’ post! I will have a regular posting slot every Saturday morning!

(Photo credit to my sister, Kate, taken at the WB studio making of Harry Potter tour in London. Hey, Kate!)

I live in London, England (with my equally geeky boyfriend, Shaun) and as you may have guessed I am a massive geek and I love crafting! My favourite crafts are crochet, particularly amigurumi, and baking, but to be honest I like to dabble in a bit of everything, and I’m willing to try anything and everything once, but I have finally conceded that I am never going to be able to knit.

Geek wise, my greatest loves are Harry Potter and Studio Ghibli. I also love gaming (although I’m terrible at it, despite years of practice…!) my favourite games are currently Little Big Planet, Skylanders, Ni no Kuni, Alice Madness Returns and all the Lego games! Oh, and I can’t forget the old classics, Pokémon, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro!

I am also a massive science nerd. I have a degree in Genetics and am currently training to be a nurse in order to achieve my dream of becoming a Genetic Counsellor! I love all types of science, though, so there may be a fair few science-related geek crafts coming your way!

Of course, that’s not ALL of my geeky loves, but it gives you a taste of things to come…

Well, I think that is enough of an introduction. I hope you will enjoy my posts. Remember to check in every Saturday morning for my geeky crafty updates!!

Harry Potter Hogwarts Ca

I leave you with a taster of this utterly epic Harry Potter Hogwarts cake, made by BershoDesigns on Etsy. It could be yours for only $4800!! Enjoy!

Geekery for while you are crafting

This week I’ve got something a little meta: geeky tools for being crafty. QueInteresante makes crayons but instead of dumb ol’ names like “green” or “electric bannana” these crayons are named after chemicals that will make that color.

My B.S. was in chemistry and my undergrad thesis used color spectroscopy so this got me right in the nostalgia. I’m also old enough to have had the kind of chemistry set that could have actually caused some harm if one were motivated enough.

At any rate, here is hoping there are a few geeky kids or adults out there who agree that these are pretty amazing.

Harry Potter Crochet Sorting Hat

Harry Potter sorting hat

Back in the day, the Warner Brothers site had an interactive game where you could answer a series of questions, and it would sort you into the appropriate Hogwarts’ house. It only took me about four tries to finally get into Gryffindor. :)

Perhaps you will get sorted there more quickly with this crochet Harry Potter-inspired Sorting Hat from Allison Hoffman at CraftyIsCool. I love how she was able to “sort out” the face on the hat – she really is a genius when it comes to crochet!

Be sure to also check out her recently released pattern set for all the Dr. Who’s!

Who Wants to Knit-Along?

Doctor Who Scarf

Attention Who-vians (and friends and relatives of Who-vians)! As you probably know, a common geeky craft project is to knit the scarf that Tom Baker wore during his time as Dr. Who. We’ve featured several Dr. Who scarf projects here on GeekCrafts: the classic pattern, a beaded version, a minimalist painting, a Doctor Who Inspired Fibonacci Scarf, a pastel version, even a Jayne Cobb take on the Dr. Who colors.

I thought I’d let you know that the Facebook Group Geeks United in Crafts is doing a Dr. Who Scarf Knit-Along to kick off the new year. People are posting their yarn and needle choices, and sharing their progress on this iconic project. It’s been neat to see all the encouragement and support people are posting to the shared progress pics!

Have you attempted the Dr. Who scarf? Share links to your pattern of choice in the Comments!

Please Don’t Launch Birds at This Pig

Because, as you can see, it’s an Angry Birds helmet, not actually one of those treacherous green piggies who keep stealing all your precious eggs. And you don’t want to hurt its lovely creator, Jenn Hall. Yes, I realize I seem to be running with a helmet theme (I previously posted Jenn’s awesome R2-D2 helmet), but can I help it when they’re this snazzy? Apparently not. And, you know, safety. It’s important. Why not be safe and geekishly chic at the same time?
