Tutorial Tuesday: Geordi La Forge Visor

geordie visor

Thingiverse contributor Drew Smith not only designed and made a near perfect replica of the visor worn my Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Geordi La Forge, but he then took it to be signed by the Twitter god himself. Nerd points +10!

Even better, he’s uploaded instructions on how you can make your own visor!

Cake & Aging: Resistance is Futile

Star Trek Borg Cube Cake

I’ve had Trek on the brain lately, so I went searching for images of “Borg Cube” (of course!). And when I did, this little lovely showed up – a Borg Cube Cake.

I wonder…when you slice it, does it ‘bleed’ motor oil? Or does it automatically deflect the knife with shields?

I love that this project looks do-able – I’m betting I could figure out how to piece together a square cake (4 8×8 layers, perhaps?), and draw a bunch of icing lines. Sure, and that’s the kind of thinking that will end me up on CraftFail. So I’ll just settle for sharing the picture of the successful project here, and make no promises for real life attempts on my part.

Tutorial Tuesday: ‘Real Life’ Portal Loop

portal loop

Ok, so I cheated a bit, it’s not really a tutorial, but Technabob reader Florian Aich has certainly made himself one awesome conversation piece. I’m putting it up as a Tutorial Tuesday, because all you need is is colored LEDs plus Portal-shaped mirrors and you’re sorted. A geeky art installation to be proud of. Just don’t try and chuck a ball through to test it, your mom/husband/wife/children will be mad.

Smell Paladin fresh all day with RPG Class Scented Oils

rpg class scented oils

I’m not sure if I’m alone in thinking of fragrance making as a craft here, so I’m going out on a limb by blogging about RPG Class scented oils. My undergrad major was in chemistry and I have an enormous appreciation for the art and science that is fragrance-making. As a fragrance geek and fragrance snob, I confess that  I have not yet had the privileged of trying any of Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs’ strange and often geeky brews, thought I have long wanted to as I’ve heard so many great things about this company.

Thanks to a ThinkGeek gift certificate from the thoughtful gentleman I’ve coached this past year,  that is going to have to change now that BPAL got their RPG Class offerings.  The Paladin comes as an “Immaculate white musk, sweet frankincense, bourbon vanilla, white leather, and shining armor.” The dreamy cleric is, “Rose amber, frankincense, myrrh, champaca flower, Peru balsam, cistus, palisander, cananga, hyssop, and narcissus absolute.” Both fragrances sound better than my usual class preference for the Mage but whatever, I’m getting them all so I don’t have to pick. I did laugh, however, at one of the commenter statements about smelling like a Mage:

“Not sure about that mage scent. Kind of imagined mine smelling of smoke, burning wood & charred flesh.”

Good point, Mr. Johns.  At any rate, I will refrain from wearing them all at once.

DIY Romulan Ale

Romulan Ale

According to StarTrek.com, Romulan Ale is “an infamous blue alcoholic beverage with a powerful kick, the drink has been banned in the United Federation of Planets since before 2285, and is still not a commonly known commodity.” It “was illegal because of a Federation trade embargo in the late 23rd century (as mentioned in Star Trek II: The Wrath of The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) through the late 24th century (per Star Trek Nemesis). (SOURCE: Romulan Cuisine on Wikipedia)

If you aren’t lucky enough to find a contraband source (Quark, perhaps?), you can try making your own via this recipe for Romulan Ale.

If you aren’t interested in drinking something that might affect your gray matter, you might be more interested in these energy drinks from ThinkGeek.

Sleep if Convenient…

. . . and with this pillowcase, you’ll want to sleep even if not convenient! What better to encourage pleasant dreams of everyone’s favorite consulting detective than this ‘Dreaming of Sherlock’ pillowcase.  The single pillowcase is a cotton blend and a  standard size and beige.  The crafter, one of our two favorite Death Eaters, is Dixiebell who is co-owner of Death Eater Delights on Etsy.

Prefer to dream of consulting criminals rather than consulting detectives?  Or perhaps you prefer a different incarnation of Sherlock?  Just drop Dixiebell a line at Etsy and share your suggestion.  She loves to try new ideas.

Now if you excuse me, I need to drop a Death Eater a line about dreaming of Mycroft!
