I Wanted To See The Universe, So I Made a TARDIS and I Ran Away.

I didn’t see anything that really struck my fancy to post about today, so I decided to post one of my own projects: my very own refinished TARDIS!

Well over a year ago, while doing some Christmas shopping for the 2014 season, we ended up at a store called At Home. There was a lot of interesting things there but I didn’t end up buying anything. However, they did have two different sized TARDIS cabinets that I realllllllllly wanted. (They don’t show them on their website so, I don’t know if they still carry them in store.)

I talked myself out of either of them, because I need more furniture like I need a hole in the head. But the thought of those lovely blue cabinets never left me. Fast forward to about a one month ago. I decided it was time to transform a small cabinet I already had into a version of the TARDIS. I only spent about $28.50 on this refinish.

This is what I started with. I don’t believe this is solid wood, but rather some kind of compressed sawdust kind of thing, mixed with something else. It doesn’t feel like pure wood. I’ve had it since probably 2005, if not longer. It was something my mom bought for me at Hancock Fabrics. I always thought it was fairly homely but it’s function was too good. It’s been where I’ve stashed my paints and PS2 games in the past.

Sorry for the potato here. I removed the top (unneeded) drawer pull and filled the hole with wood filler. I found the windows, St. John’s ambulance, police box signs and public sign on various websites, printed them to fit, and then decoupaged them on with some Modge Podge. The window trim is actually automobile pin-striping tape from Pep Boys.

I liked how the front door of the cabinet had that faux trim and recessed area on it, so I tried to recreate a version of it on the sides. these are $1 wood frames from AC Moore, with thin wood trim, from Michael’s, mitered and added to the sides.

I thought about adding some simple Home Depot stock furniture legs to it, to raise it up a little bit and give it more of a weight in my room, but I decided against it. I thought it would take away from that perfect “base” it already sits on.

I also tried my hand at some distressing/weathering painting all around the TARDIS. I bought some craft paint in lighter and darker shades of blue, and then finished it off with some clear coat to help seal it. My TARDIS is well-traveled. It’s been through a lot.

It’s Elementary, Shersocks

Shersocks by Megan-Anne Llama

Is it just me, or has it been waaaaay too long since there’s been a new BBC Sherlock episode? January 2014 was FOREVER ago! Word is there will be a one-off Christmas special (set in 1895! Interesting!) this year, with the fourth season/series of three new episodes in filming in spring 2016.

Until then, there are seasons/series 1-3 to binge watch, and this lovely sock pattern by Megan-Anne Llama, of Geek-A-Long fame, to cast on to your needles. She aptly named it Shersocks.

She did a spot-on job recreating Sherlock’s iconic wallpaper in the colorwork chart, complete with the yellow smiley face, and a contrasting bright yellow heel. Aren’t they fantastic?

What project do you currently have on the needles? (Or hook, if crochet is more your thang?) Share in the comments below and link us up!

Did you ever wonder what the Doctor’s closet might look like?

148681_15Apr15_P1060720

SheepBlue, a craftster from Ann Arbor, MI, decided to craft up a tiny version of the Doctor’s very own closet.

She repurposed a simple wood box from Michael’s, and gave it an uneven Tardis blue staining. In the closet, SheepBlue included a spare spare key, emergency party bananas, a copy of Summer Falls and An Angel’s Kiss, *gasp* TWO Weeping Angel children (how did they get there! Don’t blink!), River Song’s party heels, a tropical umbrella (you never know when you’re going to need festively bright umbrella), a portrait of River Song, Vincent’s hat, the Doctor’s fez, an extra Christmas tree decoration, an extra psychic paper book, a copy of the Don’t Blink tapes on disc, oh, and a sword. Because the Doctor might need a sword someday…for some reason…

Be sure to take a look through the posting over at Craftster to see everything included in the Doctor’s closet.

Guardians of Geekdoms

Hello All! I’m sure most of you have seen Guardians of the Galaxy by now (and if you haven’t, why?? Go, go! I’ll wait.). Baby Groot is undoubtedly one of the cutest things to hit the big screen, and I joined the masses in trying to create my own version of him for a friend’s Christmas gift.

Since I couldn’t find any plushie versions, I decided to make my own, and documented the process so I could make a Baby Groot tutorial!

Baby Groot Tutorial

There’s only one baby Groot that I believe is cuter than mine:

Featured on FashionablyGeek, Reddit user S7ar-lord’s wife made this costume for their baby boy for Halloween, and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn tweeted the picture, saying he was “out-cuted”.

If retro-media is more your style, there’s crafts for you too! First, in honor of the “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” that Peter Quill aka Starlord listens to, 30MinuteCrafts created a printable cassette tape box, perfect for any cosplay, or just a geeky place to keep things!

If you’re looking for a place to keep your valuables, Paul Mason the DIY Guy, from Geek & Sundry Vlogs, has posted a cassette tape wallet video tutorial so you can protect your cards and ID in a truly awesome way.

Hope that’s enough geeky awesomeness for you, and happy crafting!

A Selection of Timey Wimey Gifty Goodness

tardis bookshelf

Even though Christmas is over, there’s been a glut of really cool Doctor Who-inspired gifts all over the internet. They’re too cool to pass up, so here’s a quick rundown of some of the best ones I’ve seen. First up, the homemade TARDIS bookshelf. There’s an entire photo album online at Imgur, showing details like the hidden compartments. It was built by the poster’s boyfriend for Christmas.

Next up, a TARDIS quilt, also courtesy of Imgur!

If you check out the online album of this, you’ll see the poster, jgcox00’s new timey “wifey” (seewhutidid there? har har har, made myself laugh), even took the time to outline weeping angels in the TARDIS window stitching!

Last up, the same poster even got an understated TARDIS duffle bag.

On the outside, it looks like a very nice blue patchwork duffle. However, start looking inside the pockets and inside the bag, and everything is lined with a different kind of Doctor Who fabric, with some very nice detail work.

Jewelry for Band Geeks

Clarinet key earrings-140848-BOA by Hangups in KC

Any Band Geeks out there? My husband played trumpet in his high school marching band, and continued as a member of the University of Wisconsin Marching Band. Now my daughter is following suit, playing his horn in her school marching band. Over the past 20+ years, I have attended and cheered at many a band performance, and developed a definite soft spot for those musical type geeks.

So I am pleased to toot the horn (couldn’t resist the pun) of a local Kansas City duo who is making some pretty cool things out of retired band instruments. Hangups in KC has created the Band of Angels Retired Instrument Jewelry Collection, crafting unique handmade items such as clarinet key earrings (pictured above), guitar string bracelets, and a necklace from repurposed violin wood.

These ladies are passionate about their craft and their commitment to using repurposed materials. I love their brand vision and message, and that they are giving new life to retired band instruments in a unique way. And bonus –  they give 30% of every sale from the collection to Band of Angels, a non-profit that collects used music instruments and makes them available to kids in need so they can join band and orchestra programs. Nurturing future generations of band geeks is something I can get behind!

For Christmas, I gave my daughter one of Hangups’ ornaments made from a retired trumpet mouthpiece. She thought it was pretty cool, then when she heard it helped other kids get started in band, it became an even more meaningful keepsake. Band mom win!
