Ducks!

I may or may not have mentioned this before, but I’m a bit of a bird-nerd. I live with two cockatiels and a parakeet, and my current favorite thing is planning how I will go about raising ducks in my yard. My city recently made it legal to raise small poultry in residential areas, my neighbor used to have chickens, and my husband bought me a book on raising ducks for Christmas—tacit approval of this duck plan!

In celebration—and because I can’t keep my mind off ducks for long—I thought I’d share something awesome I just recently found on Etsy: the duck band as wedding ring.

Here are two examples (and their respective Etsy shops, tinahdee and bddesigns):

I really like the rings that my sweetie and I ended up with, but part of me wishes we’d seen these before the wedding. Such a fun idea, right?

(If you’re not a bird-nerd and want to know why this is funny at all, the US Geological Survey has a pretty great page about bird bands that I would encourage you to check out!)

Nood the Noob

Nood the NoobDoes everyone hate writing introductions for themselves? I’m considering doing the whole thing in third person and instructing you to read it in a TV-announcer voice… but it just wouldn’t be the same without a spangly curtain to hide behind. Ug, ok, here we go…

Hi, I’m Noodle. No relation to The FSM; it’s a nickname I picked up working in New York one summer, during another excruciating introductory event. We were going around the circle, telling everyone ”what we want to get out of working together;” the platitudes were getting more vomit-us by the minute. The girl directly before me explained that she wanted to (I quote) ”Learn a new recipe for soup, so as to combine the best bits from all of us into one nourishing whole.” I, completely inexplicably came out with ”And I want to be the noodles in your soup, absorbing all the goodness.” And thus The Noods was born.

I’m still not sure if they realised I was joking.

Tutorial Tuesday! ‘Why Not Zoidberg’ Cross Stitch

I ‘m a self confessed thread head, and I’m also a meme addict. Clearly so is craftster user OmegaChicken.

Not only have they stitched up this meme-tastic “Why not Zoidberg” cushion, but they’ve also shared the cross stitch chart, so we can all have geeky soft furnishings of our own …  whoopwhoopwhoop!!

Friday Roundup: Minecraft!

Today is the day.  I can hardly believe that Minecraft is not a full game yet, but it’s true.  Today Mojang AB, the creators of Minecraft, will be releasing the official Minecraft 1.0 version live at MineCon in Las Vegas.  I wish I could be there.  However, since I can’t be there, lets look at some truly awesome Minecraft inspired crafts.

To start things off, take a look at this Creeper Purse by Blindmoon on Etsy.  Now you can look stylish and still send everyone around you into PTSD induced seizures.

Or how about this absolutely adorable Minecraft Chicken made out of Fimo Clay.  StarPhoenixx from Etsy makes tons of cute clay figurines but this chicken made me squeak.

The cake doesn’t have to be a lie with this Plush Minecraft Cake by EeeBeeDee on Etsy.

We all know how much I love coffee cozies.  I can’t get enough of the things, yet strangely I don’t use them on my actual coffee.  Either way, you have to love this Creeper Coffee Cozy by LilacsLovables on Etsy.  She calls it a “Mug Cozy” but I don’t think you can even USE mugs for anything other than coffee…right?

How are you supposed to dig around in your mines without the proper tools?  Well, diamonds are expensive, so how about these Perler Bead Diamond Magnets by GumballNinja on Etsy?

Have you ever looked at your tissue paper dispenser and thought to yourself, “What am I doing with my life?”.  Me too.  You can solve that problem by pimping out your dispenser with a cool Minecraft Grass Cube Tissue Box Cover!  But where could you get one?  How about from sockmonkeyfun on Etsy?

I bet that, like me, you don’t have any friends.  What?  You do have friends…can you share?  No….right then.  Well, since you have SO MANY FRIENDS, I suppose you must collect them.  Why not add one more to the list, you friend hog.  This Minecraft Pet Wolf Statue, by DandelionBlow on Etsy, won’t ever pick you last for dodge ball…again.

Since you  have so many friends, why don’t you marry one?  All you need is a diamond ring like this Minecraft Inspired “Diamond” Ring by tinybackpack on Etsy.

Alright.  As usual, I have saved the best for last.  This Minecraft Plush Pig is Adorable.  I love it.  I want to own it.  ClosetMonsterstoys on Etsy make all kinds of awesome pop culture plushies, but this pig is just too awesome for words.

That’s it for this week.  I’m off to patiently refresh the Minecraft page until the full version is released.

Star Wars “Rebel Scum” hat

So Star Wars is finally out on Blu Ray, and while I won’t be buying it, my brother did and he’s really excited about it. So in honor of everyone who is excited I present the knitted “Rebel Scum” hat! greenchick knitted this hat for her husband to wear when the Trilogy originally came out on dvd back in 2004.

I haven’t seen all of the changes made to the movies, what do those of you who bought the blu ray think of them?

Knitted Dalek Cushion

Via Crafty Tardis

I love the granny-chic charm of this (which I imagine to be sort of like shabby-chic only with more knitting and perhaps biscuits*!)

Crafty Tardis contributor love_shark_week made this, another Dalek and a Tardis knitted cushion in really striking colours.

She used knitpro to make the pattern. A pretty neat website where you can import any image and get it to draw you a knit, crochet or even cross stitch pattern! ooh… This would be great fun, except those are the three crafts that I don’t (yet) ‘do’ *sadface*

Anyhow, by the wonder blogging, go forth readers! go and make patterns for EVERYTHING.

*sorry ‘cookies’ pfft… I have no idea what American Grandmas do if they’re not eating rich tea biscuits, baking tea loaf and drinking tea.
