Have a Merry Geeky Christmas

Well, I can hardly believe it’s December already (so many presents to finish!), but ’tis the season for Christmas trees and ornaments. Luckily for you all, I have found the perfect way to geek up your home for the holidays! These would make great gifts for fellow nerds, or keep them for yourself!

First up, for all of the Captain America fans, make sure your tree is appropriately patriotic with this lovely felt tree skirt! Crafted by the great folks over at With Our Powers Combined, they took a Dollar Store tree skirt and turned it into the Captain America shield. It’s amazing what you can do with creativity and a few yards of felt.

Next, for all you Potterheads out there, adorn your tree with the Golden Snitch! Made by Gabrielle from Tiny Apartment Crafts, this Snitch is made from a gold ornament, some acrylic paint, and some glittery wings crafted from wire and tissue paper. Beautiful and shiny, it’s a perfect addition to any tree!

Every time a Snitch gets its wings, Gryffindor wins!

Well, no matter what day you celebrate, here’s wishing everyone a great holiday season!

How-to: Hogwarts Houses Cake

Hogwarts Cake

Darla at Bakingdom.com clearly put a fair bit of work into the delicious looking Harry Potter cake, but the result looks spectacular. It’s a cake that caters for each house of Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin, at least in colours if not in volume! Darla has written out full instructions in the post – including recipes for the Spice Cake and Cream Cheese Frosting – should you want to give this a go. So check it out, along with some other of her great Hogwarts themed goodies here: Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts Cake.

Now all we need is a spell for removing cakey goodness from one’s hips! Skinnyramus!

Easy DIY Wands

DIY Chop Stick Wands

This is a smart tutorial from Majann on DeviantArt, in that it’s a really simple, easy, yet super effective geek craft. Great for cosplay, Wizard Parties, or just to have a selection of wands on hand… just in case.

Majann’s photo tutorial shows how to make great looking wands using wooden cheap chop sticks, hot glue, random beads and acrylic paint – Pheonix tail feathers and such not needed! Just be careful not to burn yourself on the hot glue.

Captain Malcolm Reynolds: Man or Mouse?!

Have you ever seen something so cute you’ve actually squealed out loud? Of course you have; you’re a Geek Crafts reader. But seriously, I’ve just had the biggest cute-fest in weeks browsing through Quernus Crafts’ photostream over on Flickr, after seeing this incredibly wonderful mini sculpture:

Captain Mal Reynolds Mouse

It’s Mal Reynolds! From Firefly! But he’s a mouse!

I was a HUGE fan of Firefly (why, Fox, whyyy?) so was instantly drawn to this precious piece of polymer clay. But then I looked through some of the other things that Kirsten has made and found there was a goldmine of beautifully crafted figurines, and something for any type of geek. Harry Potter geeks, Terry Pratchett geeks, Comic Book geeks, Torchwood geeks, Hobbit geeks, Manga geeks, Dr Who geeks, Science geeks, Star Wars geeks, or just a geek who likes cute things.

Check out the Quernus Crafts website too, where you can shop or even commission your own Quernus creation. I am now deleting all my Quernus bookmarks though, because I’m scared I’ll just go and buy everything.

March 14

Nom nom – International Pi Day!

Nom nom - International Pi Day

Today is the 14th of March and that can only mean one thing. No, I don’t mean the birthday of Albert Einstein and Johann Strauss, I mean International Pi day! According to the Pi Day website:

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (a Greek letter) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.
