Unicorn Roundup

The amazing Team Unicorn proclaims: “Geek Girls: Like unicorns, we’re not supposed to exist!” In honor of their awesomeness, this Roundup is featuring the best Unicorn Crafts around the web. Buy or craft some Unicorn gear for yourself, or treat your favourite geeky lady to some Unicorn gifts.  Once you’re done here, check out their video for more proof of how Team Unicorn Rocks!

10.  Unicorn Bookmark

The perfect way to hold your place in your favorite book.  It is simple and elegant, but the colorful jewels lead to the little unicorn trinket.  A discrete way to boast geek girl pride.

9.  Unicorn Clay Necklace

Hang your Unicorn pride around your neck with this clay necklace.  This delicate piece captures the grace of the mythical beast, and the sparkling eye will capture attention.

8.  Embroidered Unicorn

This adorable unicorn is embroidered in bold colors on a heart fabric background.  This little guy has some major personality with his spiky hair, flaring nostrils, and flower collar.

7.  Luna the Unicorn Amigurumi

Everyone could use a cuddle Unicorn.  This pattern for Luna will help you make a Unicorn army to take over the world with… or at least to snuggle with.  Make one for every geeky girl you know and spread the Unicorn word.

6.  Valentine Unicorn

This little Valentine Unicorn was sculpted from Polymer Clay.  Her big eyes and swirly pink hair might be a cuteness overload for some, but shouldn’t everyone make an exception for cuteness on Valentines day?

5.  Where Rainbows Come From

We interrupt all of the previous cuteness with a revelation on the origins of rainbows.  This 4×4 print says it all.  Position it above your computer so the Unicorn appears to pour rainbow geekiness into your monitor.

4.  My Other Ride is a Unicorn

This shirt makes me want to visit my mom’s ranch and wear it while horseback riding.  Either that, or wear it while beating my friends in some Mario Cart.

3.  Unicorn Hat

This hat is perfect if you want to tell the world about your Unicorn/Geek status.  However, it might make it a little awkward if your friend is wearing the shirt featured in #4!

2.  Mounted Unicorn

Some people appreciate a good trophy.  This crochet Unicorn’s name is Matthew, and he perhaps got bested by a geek girl who then decided to show him off.  Matthew is sure to make visitors do a double take.

1.  The Last Unicorn

The last in this roundup is an icon for many geek girls.  The Last Unicorn is a book and movie that many grew up loving.  This little plushie made from microplush, faux fur, and faux suede also has a wire skeleton that makes her poseable.  The crafter artist did a great job of bringing to life our favorite Unicorn.

Lots o’ Lord of the Rings

Hobbits, wizards, elves, and kings.
What’s not to love about
Lord of the Rings?

Many a crafter has been so inspired,
to knit, sew, or sculpt from this story admired.

But some feel the need to go a bit further,
to celebrate this story with a touch of odd fervor.

So check out these crafts, both geeky and unique,
and I promise I’ll stop rhyming in faux-Tolkien speak.

Eye of Sauron Journal

Sauron Journal

Etsy seller ArtBug offers this one-of-a-kind Eye of Sauron journal, perfect for scribbling down all your evil plans. What I love about this most of all is that the eye friggin’ LIGHTS UP.

Hobbit Feet Baby Booties

Hobbit Feet baby booties

I’ve seen various incarnations of these crazy hobbit-feet slippers, but none so cute as these wee baby booties. Knit some up for your own little hobbit with this free pattern offered by Penwiper. Grown-ups can also get in on the hairy foot action with this Hobbit foot pattern from The Unique Sheep.

Door of Durin Beaded Necklace

Door of Durin beaded necklace

It took Etsy seller Whitestar Jewelry 15 hours to hand-bead this striking Door of Durin necklace.  What impresses me more is the story behind the store, as the maker uses beadwork as a way to soothe her bipolar disorder.

Frodo Plush
Frodo Doll

Craftster member MumbleFord wasn’t content to simply buy a plush Frodo from a store. She had to make her own! I think he turned out even cuter than the original. She was also generous enough to share her pattern, so you can make your own hobbit.

Map of Middle Earth Cigar Box
Map of Middle Earth Box

The latest LOTR swap on Craftster yielded some amazing projects, from replica cloaks to an amigurumi Bilbo. What impressed me the most, though, was this map of Middle Earth burned into a cigar box, made by Craftster Gommeriffic. Perfect thing for hiding your Old Toby in, eh?

Eye of Sauron T-shirt
Eye of Sauron Tie Dyed Shirt

Throw Led Zepplin’s “Ramble On” on the turntable and rock out with this crazy Eye of Sauron tie-dyed T-shirt, available from Portland-based Etsy seller Tie Dyed Monkeys.

Miniature J.R.R. Tolkien Art Doll
JRR Tolkien clothespin doll

The man himself, adorably immortalized in clothespin-doll form. Debbie Ritter (Etsy’s Uneek Doll Designs) also has a little C.S. Lewis doll. Makes me wish she had a dollhouse version of the Eagle and Child pub they used to meet in!

Book Bracelets

All good book worms should show off their favorite novels.  This Harry Potter Book Bracelet is just one of the many items that Etsy user pandatreats has available in their shop.  They also take custom requests so you can get all your favorite books or manga, and they ship them off as bracelets, necklaces, earrings, keychains, charms, and more.  The only question now is, which of your favorite books do you choose?

Brain Bracelet

Brain BraceletWearing your heart on your sleeve is so cliche. How about wearing your brain on your wrist?

Amy Sweetman’s store, Anatomology, is chock-full of gorgeous anatomy-inspired jewelry, such as this eye-catching brain bracelet.

What intrigues me the most is the unique magnet-based clasp, which is designed to keep the charm from drooping on the delicate silver-plated chains.

This line wasn’t born out of a gothic obsession with human organs, though. Sweetman, a professor of psychology with a focus on neuroscience, created the collection as a way to heal from a devastating breakup.

Her works centers on the heart, brain, and spine, and each piece of jewelry comes with an inspiring message such as courage, integrity, or harmony.
