Quit Dragon Your Feet and Get Started on This Blanket!

Dragon blanket by MJs Off the Hook Designs

You may have seen the various mermaid tail blankets all over Pinterest lately – check out this dragon version! MJ of MJ’s Off the Hook Designs created this beauty incorporating two strands of bulky weight yarn with a Q hook, in newborn to adult sizes.

She also has other varieties, including a dolphin, large mouth bass, and a car seat cozy collection. And her shark blanket went viral during Shark Week!

Done with a large Q hook, I’m curious how quick these dragon blankets stitch up. Have you tried one of these cocoon type blankets? How long did it take you? Share your experience with us in the comments below!

Make An Amazing Toothless Costume For Extremely Patient Dogs

Loki in Costume

Before we get started, I want to point out there is a dog wearing this Toothless costume.

Don’t believe me? Check this out.

Loki in Costume 2

Say hello to Loki, quite possibly the world’s happiest dressed dog. Loki is the model of a dog’s Toothless costume from “How to Train Your Dragon.” The directions walk through the entire process, and even includes how to make a dummy body of your dog, if you happen to have a dog chill enough to sit still for duct tape and plastic. My dog, not so much, but for those of us with less than patient dogs, there’s also directions on how to take measurements instead.

Rogue Siren is the creator of the costume and she’s also got an Instructable on how to create your own mermaid tail (she performs as a mermaid for parties in the Atlanta area).

Here Be Dragons

The staple of any classic fairy tale involves knights and dragons, and usually a beautiful princess as well. Coming fresh from the Desolation of Smaug, and how all I really want for Christmas is a Night Fury, I’m sure you can tell that dragons are some of my favorite fairy tale creatures. While there’s no place to buy them, I’ve rounded up a few ways for you to make them!

First, for those of you who’d like an adorable stuffed toy, DIYFluffies on Etsy has a great pattern available for $9.oo. This little guy’s name is Yoki, and at 10 inches tall, he is a great gift for any little geek  or princess. You can sew him with fleece, felt, and some glass eyes.

Next, for all you crocheters out there, Sarselgurumi has a great tutorial for creating an amigurumi Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. Made with only one skein, an F hook, some batting, and of course, lots of love, this irresistible Night Fury is sure to capture everyone’s heart.

Here’s sending you all great holiday wishes of crafting and geekiness!

Dragon Dress

dragon dress

Pink Hickey on Craftster made this amazing, incredible, fantastic, dragon dress. She gave a tutorial on how to make it, tailored to yourself and all. I’ve had this pinned to my Clothing board for as long as I’ve had Pinterest, and the only thing stopping me from owning this dress is getting hold of the fabric – “Shibuki Dragon” The Alexander Henry Fabrics Collection 2007. An endeavour worth the effort, if her results are anything to go by!

Game of Thrones Dragonscale Top

I thought about posting something about Hobbit Day – since September 22nd is the birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins – and the movie Facebook Page posted a great How to Throw a Hobbit Day Party guide. But September 22nd is so yesterday, so today I bring to you a Game of Thrones Targaryen House dragonscale bikini top. Because, thanks to the Internet, such a thing exists.

The crafter decided since the Targaryen house symbol is the dragon, and Danerys is the “mother of dragons”, after all, it made sense to create a “scaled” fabric. She also suggests that you “Wear this bikini top with a cute pair of daisy-dukes…people will stop and stare at you as though you had little baby dragons crawling all over your shoulders.” Indeed.
