They say friendship is magic, but it is shiny and chrome too? Artist savethewailes obviously thinks so. Take a look at the amazingly detailed Mad Max My Little Ponies this artist has created. This has to be my favorite pony mashup ever.

Q and A with Jewel Staite and a Kaylee craft

Kaylee Frye Shindig dress Cross Stitch

Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee Frye on “Firefly” and “Serenity” was in Kansas City for Planet Comicon this weekend, and a local movie theatre took advantage and showed “Serenity”, followed by a short Q&A with her. As Browncoats, my husband, daughter and I were pleased to attend.

The Q&A was fairly quick but interesting. Here are some highlights:

  • Jewel is apparently an “adventurous” foodie and has a food blog. She said while many in Hollywood “juice”, she does not: “I don’t juice. I steak.”
  • She has enjoyed all the food she’s had in Kansas City, saying that what she’s eaten has been “top notch”. She specifically mentioned Jack Stack BBQ and Genessee Royale.
  • She loves wine and enjoyed visiting Amigoni Urban Winery. She said if she wasn’t an actor, she’d probably be a winemaker. As much as she enjoys wine, however, she said Adam Baldwin is an even bigger “wine snob” than she is, but that’s ok, because he usually picks up the tab.
  • When she is at cons, she is often too busy to seek anyone out, but tries to make time to find cast members from “Lost“. She is a big “Lostie”; Matthew Fox is one of her TV crushes.
  • She hated wearing the ruffled dress in the episode, “Shindig” – it was just too cumbersome and hard to maneuver.
  • Someone asked if she kept any of the props from the “Firefly” set – she said Nathan Fillion took most of them and has his own “museum.” She also said Adam has the head of the “Hero of Canton” statue from the episode, “Jaynestown.”
  • Her favorite “Firefly” episodes were “Out of Gas” and “Objects in Space.”
  • She said Nathan frequently tried to prank her on set, such as putting lotion on the door handle of her dressing room.
  • She talks and texts with other “Firefly” cast members “all the time”: “I took away eight friendships.”
  • She has two dogs and loves animals.

To make this post geek-crafty, I found you a Kaylee-inspired craft: Kaylee in her Shindig Dress Cross Stitch Pattern (shown above, originally shared on Craftster – click to see other Firefly cross-stitch projects)

If you had attended the Q&A with Jewel, what question would you have asked?

Thor: The Dark World, and the Amigurumi

Ohhhh my gosh, you guys. I just saw “Thor: The Dark World.” I’m not even going to bother fully reviewing it – there are plenty of reviews out there to fill that need for you. Besides, from the reviews I read, they’re just not that encouraging. I actually really enjoyed the movie, as did my comic-book-geek husband. The visual effects were stunning, almost too much to absorb. There were solid elements of humor, and Loki got even more time to shine. The battle scenes were epic – I actually had chills the entire last 20 minutes, waiting to see what happened next. When it was done, it took me a few minutes to catch my breath – I felt like I’d just been on a roller coaster! What a ride!

So take any quasi-negative reviews with a grain of salt – if you’re looking for a comic book movie with great effects, and just want to be entertained, you won’t be disappointed.

P.S. We saw it in IMAX 3D – totally worth it. Gorgeous.

P.P.S. There are TWO bits to stay after for. One after the visual cast credits, then another one after all the behind-the-scenes names scroll past. Stay for both.

Now, to make this crafty, how about some Thor crafts?

Jess Newstone has an adorable amigurumi pattern for a Thor, complete with Mjollnir (see below). She also has a Loki pattern. Be sure to check out the rest of her Tumblr; I love the concept. She puts her “pocket Loki” doll in all sorts of fun scenarios and photographs it . Fun and adorable.

Nikki Olida/Golden Jellybean has created a doll with a different look: a Thor Sackdoll (see below). Check out her video description, and the pattern in her Etsy shop.

And finally, Dedfa has created a fun crochet Thor helmet (see below).

“Is this a test?” – Captain America WWII Shield

With the most recent Avengers movie trailer released, it was high time for me to finally find some awesome Avengers crafts.

In my search for some Avengers crafts, I ran across this Instructable by MonkeyWork for a Less Than $20.00 WWII Captain America Shield .

Now, I”m not exactly sure why, but I’ve always liked this shield more than his circle shield. When it was first announced that they were doing a Captain America movie, I was terrified. Until this promotional picture came out. Once that picture hit the interweb, I was sold.

MonkeyWork’s instructable has very clear and easy to follow steps in making this iconic shield. With this instructable, I now have a new item to add to my gear for the midnight showing of The Avengers.
