Geek-a-Long with Lattes and Llamas

Geek-a-long afghan squares by Lattes and Llamas

The gals at Lattes and Llamas are at it again – Jac and Megan-Anne are hosting another year-long nerdtastic “geek-a-long” mystery knitting project. I spotlighted their endeavor last year, and wanted to let you know they are deep into this year’s project.

They release an all-new geek reference block every week, so you build an afghan over the course of a year. They’ve already featured Bunsen & Beaker from the Muppets, the Flash, Indiana Jones, and Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus.

I *love* that their patterns include both knitting and crochet instructions – it can be hard to find geek love for the crocheters out there, so I appreciate that!

What geek references do you hope they represent in upcoming patterns? Do you prefer knitting or crochet?

Beaker Bag

Beaker Bag by Whimsical Frippery

I recently found Whimsical Frippery‘s blog (aka Poppy) and am very impressed with the variety of projects she shares there. Today I’m going to feature her Beaker Bag, because who doesn’t love a little Beaker in their life. Imagine the conversation starter this project would be!

Be sure to poke around the rest of her site, where you will find herb planters of the AT-AT and R2D2 variety, as well as a variety of embroidery hoops (including Buffy, Angel, and Adventure Time).

Muppet Mania!

So last week Bret McKenzie won an Oscar for the awesome song, “Man or Muppet” from the new muppet movie.

If you don’t know the song check out this video.

If you don’t know who Bret McKenzie is, check out Flight of the Conchords.

If you don’t know who the Muppets are…….I’m sorry, have you been living under a rock for the last 50 years?

Well, to celebrate this amazing Oscar win, you can do this pretty awesome Muppet Craft. It’s a 3d paper car, full of the Muppets. It’s not the fanciest, most original craft, but maybe it will inspire you to make a Muppet painting or a Muppet hat or a Muppet Theater Playset.

Muppet Busters

With the latest Muppet movie in theaters, my children have more than a bit of Muppet Mania. My son yells “ANIMAL!” as he madly air drums and my little girl sings MaNa MaNa as she skips down the hallway. Having grown up with the Muppet Show, this just makes my heart sing!

And then, I found this piece of art in monkeyminion’s etsy. Muppets meets Mythbusters. Put the two together and you have Muppet Busters!

I think the Muppet version of Jaime is spot on and doesn’t Adam make a great Crazy Harry?

Friday Roundup: Muppet Crafts!

Quite aware that I am dating myself, I have fond memories of watching “The Muppet Show” when it was actually on TV (which premiered in 1976 – groan…). As my husband also shares an affection for the distinctive puppets, our kids have grown up with the movies as well – one of our Christmas traditions is to watch The Muppet Christmas Carol. Good times. We’re quite looking forward to the next installment, when “The Muppets” launches on November 23rd.

So for today’s roundup, I thought I would offer up to you a bounty of Muppet-related craftastic goodness. First up, a fabulous crochet Animal hat, from Etsy shopowner, TeeterTotterTot.

This Miss Piggy Cameo hairpin from Katey Bree Designs is really interesting – where would one get a Miss Piggy cameo??

Beaker is one of my favorite characters, so I love the idea of the two of these guys “peeking out” from a framed cross-stitch (PDF pattern available from LizzyStitches). How could you look at this on your wall and not smile?

This Kermit the Frog cup cozy looks like a quick and easy Muppet craft – and kid-friendly, too, since it’s from Disney Family Crafts.

I almost wish I wore glasses so I could have a reason to make this Professor Honeydew glasses holder amigurumi project! Heck – maybe I don’t need a reason!
