Pay the yarn price for these Game of Thrones pillows

Game of Thrones crochet pillows by ICrochetThings

One of favorite crafts is crochet – when watching my geeky favorites, my hands are rarely idle. I can also knit, but I’m much faster at crochet. I have taught myself Tunisian crochet, which looks a lot like knitting, but have so far only made a pet mat. So I was intrigued when I saw these Game of Thrones Tunisian crochet pillows by icrochetthings.

Her pillow example features the Stark direwolf sigil on one side, and the Lannister lion sigil on the other. She also provides charts for the other house sigils, so you can customize to your favorite. She also commented that she plans to crochet all of them and make one big blanket. What a lovely gift that would make for a GoT fan!

Have you tried Tunisian crochet? Which houses would you represent in pillow form? Let us know in the comments below!

Lovable Monsters

I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I was young, I always wanted a big scary monster to be my friend and carry me around (I wanted a Luck Dragon so bad!). Although I never found any wandering dragons, I have found new ways to create big, lovable monster friends!

While studying abroad in Scotland a few years ago, I got to visit Loch Ness, and, of course, kept an eye out for any sign of long-necked Nessie. I didn’t spot her then, but Hannah from We Lived Happily Ever After has created a great version of her!

Loch Ness Monster Stuffed Animal Tutorial

Made with only 1.5 yards of felt and some stuffing, (she suggests using the tons of plastic bags that we all have – which is a brilliant idea), this Nessie is big enough for a two-year old to ride, and would make the perfect  addition to any geek’s toy room. Full details, great pictures, and a tutorial are available at her website.

The next project is especially for any cephalod-lovers out there! Less expensive than finding one in the deep blue sea, Emily over at the Philadelphia Weekly blog posted patterns for how to sew your own 8-foot giant squid pillow.

Giant Squid Tutorial

Emily recommends 2 yards of felt, 1 yard of polka-dot type fabric to serve as suckers, and 5 lbs of stuffing. If anyone completes this, she’d love to see pictures – email her at eguendelsberger@philadelphiaweekly.com. You can also find the tutorial on Tumblr as well.

Who is your favorite monster? Sully from Monsters Inc.? Ludo from Labyrinth? Falkor from the Neverending Story? Let me know in the comments!

Appa, the Last Pillow Pet

Appa pillow pet

As an aunt who spent a good deal of time last Christmas tracking down just the right Pillow Pets for her nieces, I can tell you for sure I never saw one as cool as this Appa pillow project I just found on Cut Out + Keep. I love that a complete tutorial is included – cuts down on the guesswork when one simply must have a project like this one.

In case you aren’t familiar, Appa is Aang’s loyal sky bison on the animated series Avatar.  If you aren’t familiar with the series Avatar, get thee to Netflix pronto!

LongCat Travel Neck Pillow

LongCat Travel Neck PillowI travel a lot.  It’s my job.  It could easily be said that I live on airplanes.  I always see people with neck pillows and I think they look stupid.  I have often said that I will never use a neck pillow, and that my sore neck after every flight is a badge of honor.

Well that is about to change.

This Long Cat Neck Pillow by Felicia Rose on Etsy is the height of fashion.  If I saw someone with one of these on a plane, I would marry them.  Additionally, its inability to grasp simple human grammar structure is hilarious.

Check out the Pillow!

Flickr Pool: Royal Tenenbaums Pillows

Royal Tenenbaums PillowsGrab your goggles, because Geek Crafts is taking a dip in the pool…the Flickr Pool!  Each week we’ll be showcasing some of the awesome geek creations made by our Flickr group members.

There are a lot of great crafts floating around the pool right now, and it was tough picking just one to kick off the series. As both an embroiderer and a film nerd, though, I was instantly drawn to Ellen Schinderman’s stitched submission.

This trio of pillows features the lovable losers from Wes Anderson’s film The Royal Tenenbaums, complete with quotes from the narrator. Drop by Ellen’s blog, Schindermania, to check out the backs of the pillows, too, which have fabric correlating to each Tenenbaum child’s personality (you can already see the fuzz from the fur coat backing for Margo’s).

Royal Tenenbaums Pillow MargoIf you want to see the pillows  in person, they’ll be part of the fifth annual “Crazy 4 Cult”  gallery show in Los Angeles, July 8-30. Congratulations, Ellen!
