This Star Wars Derby Hat Takes the Prize

Stasia Star Wars hat - top view

I had the opportunity to spend some time at Kansas City’s longest-running science fiction convention, ConQuesT, this weekend. I ran into my friend Annastasia Webster, of Stasia Crafts, there, and her hat bowled me over. Stasia is known on the con circuit for her stunning hats, and this Star Wars confection was no exception.

“You just need a ton of crap and some hot glue,” was her advice to me on making unique headwear, but this was far from “crap” – she’s quite clever and inventive with her supplies.

Her hat featured Yoda, Darth Vader, and R2D2 figures, as well as a light saber. She mentioned that when she went looking for action figures, they were rather pricey, so she opted to grab some kid water bottles that had similar figures on top, and handy flat bottoms that sat nicely on her hat. The light saber? It’s a bubble wand! She just scraped off the bubble label, tossed the bubble contraption, and it was perfect.

In the pic, you can also just make out her shawl, which she hand-knitted. Her talents are limitless!

Knit a Stuffed R2D2

As the designer theredlineknitter says its for the tiny Jedi in your life. You have to start them young, its the rules.  Small huggable and sure to be dragged on wild adventures. Knit in just a couple of pieces (body, arms), this guy is ready to roll. As the designer says:

This very huggable stuffed R2D2 is bound to become a favorite friend for any Star Wars fan. He’s big enough to be a sidekick, but small enough that he can be carried around by even the tiniest future Jedis.

A Hoopla of Robots!

Over on Craftster, there has been a great big HOOPLA! Actually, this Hoopla has been going on for a couple of years now and has not lost momentum like so many other crafty trends. The term applies to any sort of needle work framed in an embroidery hoop regardless of size.

I have to say this particular set of Hoopla is some of my all time favorites. It combines R2D2 and C3PO, needlework and felt. How awesome is that??! Loveandasandwich stitched up these wonderfully detailed pieces bringing our favorite ‘bots to life. She even gives us a bit of insight as to her creative process towards the end of her original post.

Fantastic work loveandasandwich! The Force is with you!

Tutorial Tuesday: R2D2 Lamp

Instructables contributor Nylanan put together this amazing tutorial on how to transform an old silver lamp into an  homage to our favourite comedy sidekick droid, R2D2.

lets have 3 random facts about R2D2:

  1. The actor that played him (Kenny Baker) actually REALLY didn’t get on with the actor that played C3po (Anthony Daniels). In-fact to this day they’ve got a really rocky relationship…
  2. Kenny Baker actually had rude pictures of ladies stuck to the inside of the helmet of his costume (!!!) to keep him amused during the long hours of filming!! SHOCKING!!
  3. A couple of months ago I went to a convention called “Collectormania” in Milton Keynes and saw Kenny Baker chasing* a guy dressed in Storm Trooper armour trying to hit him with his walking stick! The storm trooper turned around and said “That’s not very nice” and Kenny Baker’s handler replied “well , you did try to kill him!” – priceless!!

*well he uses a wheelchair now, so he was being pushed by a handler, which made the whole scene even more surreal!
