I Am Polymethyl Methacrylate

Mooching around Covent Garden between shows on my last matinee day, I came across these gorgeous necklaces and brooches made by Brendan & Ruth from I Am Acrylic. The pair of them design and make all the awesome designs you see here, as well as other jewellery inspired by ‘space and sky and nature and things.’ I really love the simplicity of the icons, and the bold use of colour – the necklaces would look great worn layered together.

Every piece is individually cut on a fretsaw, from acrylic or wood, then hand finished in their Spitalfields workshop. They sell in a number of stores through out the UK, or online at their site and etsy shop.

Tutorial Tuesday! Rocket Knuckle Duster Ring!

I dunno, there’s something about this Rocket Knuckle Duster Ring that makes me feel all warm and childish. Maybe it’s the cartoon-outlines, the playful shade of red, or just the fact that it’s a goddam ROCKET!! … I just can’t put my finger on it, but I know I LOVE it!

Creator, blogger, and Craftster user made this sculpey creation for a co-worker, and kindly posted a step-by-step-tutorial over on his blog! Thanks Purkey, you rock!

I only ever work in fabric, but this tutorial is so clear and well explained I really think I might try this for myself… who wouldn’t want MASSIVE rocket jewellery?

Geek Crafts at the State Fair

I went to the Oregon State Fair last weekend and got to see some pretty rad geek crafts there! In the Legos competition, this magnificent Yoda took a second prize.

In the 4-H Hall, this woodburned Twilight plaque won a Blue Award.

The 4-H Ceramics competition spotlighted some gorgeously intricate dragons — both of them took Blue Awards, too.

And I loved these 4-H science-fair projects — the illustrated poster explaining the recycled rocket and the self-starting electric motor were both awesome!

The Oregon State Fair runs through Labor Day — if you’re nearby, don’t miss it! And if you’ve seen (or made!) any other geek crafts at your state fair, I’d love to hear about them too…

UPDATE: Thanks to zebuladesign for sharing her flickr photos of geek crafts at the Michigan State Fair with us!
