LEGO Brick Spice Rack

lego spice rack

Crafting can clutter your house in the wink of an eye. You can decorate a whole wall with all the perler beading I’ve done in my life! Our house is pretty tiny, and I’m sure my boyfriend will get grumpy if I start filling the kitchen cabinets with yarn and felt, so I’m always on the lookout for crafts that are both geeky and useful.

SHIFT! has posted an amazing tutorial over at Instructables that certainly fits the criteria! He fabricated a spice rack that looks like a gigantic red LEGO brick. His inspiration came from an image by Dave Delisle, who has a whole website full of geeky concept art and ideas called Dave’s Geeky Ideas.

On a side note, it’s theoretically possible to make a 3.5 kilometers (or 2.2 miles) high LEGO tower before the piece at the bottom collapses. Those bricks are strong!

GeekCrafts Submission: Harry Potter Sharpie Mug

DIY Sharpie-decorated mugs

We received this as a submission, and what a cute project! I had no idea you could decorate ceramic coffee mugs with regular Sharpies! I love how bright the colors turned out and the adorable little Harry Potter face (complete with mini Gryffindor scarf collar!).

What would you draw on your coffee mug? A Star Trek insignia? The Star Wars Rebel Alliance logo? A couple of Portals?

Instructable: Magnetic Pac-man Calendar

Pac-man Calendar

I love this submission we received. It’s such a simple idea that it’s one of those things you think “why haven’t I seen this before?”. The board is a metal plate, and all the pieces are magnetic so re-positionable for maximum retro-geek fun. I’m definitely planning on giving this a go. We get heaps of stupid free advertising fridge magnets in our mailbox, so perhaps this is a good way of upcycling them!

Head over to instructables.com for the How-To written by ChrysN. And don’t forget to post some pics below if you give this a try yourself! I’d love to see this applied to other games, such as a Space Invader calendar where each invader is a day of the month and you get to blow one up each morning – it would be especially nice to kill Mondays!

Geeky Cookie Cutters!

Totoro and Oliver

I found some AMAZING cookie cutters on WarpZone Prints on Etsy, and I just could not resist trying them out!! So, I ordered a few and here’s the finished result! I absolutely love them!! I also have a Mr. Drippy cutter, but I wasn’t able to get the cutter to come out very well, so that needs some practice I think! Athey Moravetz from WarpZone prints makes all the cutters with a 3D printer, and can make custom cutters as well as all the ones in the store!

Sheldon Cooper Amigurumi Pattern

sheldon cooper amigurumi

Bazinga!

It’s your favourite physics geek, Sheldon Cooper, made into this adorable crochet doll by Jackie on A[mi]dorable Crochet! And there’s a free pattern for him! Squee!

AND… he’s even approved by none other than Jim Parsons, the actor who plays Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory!

There is also a Howard Wallowitz doll made by the same person! There’s no pattern, though, but I’m pretty sure the doll is the same as the Sheldon doll with different clothes/accessories! Hopefully she’ll soon make the whole BBT gang!
