ROUNDUP: Big Bang Theory Crafts

We’ve been watching a lot of The Big Bang Theory episodes lately, so I thought a roundup of Big Bang crafts might be fun. The Internets did not disappoint me.

Doaflip posted this understated Big Bang Theory cross-stitch project on Craftster – an ode to Sheldon‘s Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock decision-making technique.

Another crazy-detailed needlework project – a flowchart of how Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock works. The crafter, mindboggld, took various pictures from the internet and imported them into Visio to create the chart. Clever girl, and extra geek points for using Visio! I would love to just get a poster print of this for my son! Click on the image above for close-ups!

Big Bang Theory Tile Coasters

Also from mindboggld, a set of Big Bang Theory tile coasters, with 3D molecule renderings she found at 3dchem.com. I love that it includes Lactose, since Leonard is lactose-intolerant. These were included in a swap with the above embroidery! I can’t believe she gave them away! Clever AND strong, that one!

A fun & cozy set of Big Bang Theory character plushies by cubosabio on Deviantart. As one of the project commentors said, “these rock more than Care Bears.”

Big Bang Theory Hako Clones

I hadn’t heard the term “hako clones” before seeing this Big Bang Theory paper toys project – I guess I always referred to them in my head as “paper cube heads”. Perhaps hako clones has more (ba)zing(a) to it. Bonus: the artist ditch-scrawls posted the templates in his papercraft gallery. Be sure to link over there, because he has lots of other geeky hako templates, like Luke Skywalker, Superman, Army of Darkness Ash, Highlander, & Dr. Who.

Big Bang Theory Bazinga earrings

While neither my son nor I are particularly crazy about Sheldon’s catch-phrase, I do like the simplicity of these “Bazinga” earrings by Just Duckie Designs on Etsy.

I’ve seen these photo clocks at Hobby Lobby & Archivers, but never would have thought of putting TV stills in the spaces, like this Sheldon clock by P.S. Francis. You could also intersperse pictures with character quotes. Might be kind of fun to have different clocks in each room, each highlighting a different show or movie. A Firefly clock, anyone?

Farnsworth

 

As an avid Warehouse 13 fan, I’ve searched high and low for awesome Warehouse 13 crafts. The results are saddening.

However, I managed to come across this amazing Farnsworth necklace based off the communicators used by the agents of Warehouse 13. The Farnsworths, invented by Philo Farnsworth (inventor of the television), are a Warehouse exclusive. But now you can have your own, just hanging around your neck or pinned to your jacket.

Just be sure to answer when Artie calls.

Feeling a little…sluggish?

Futurama Brain Slug According to the academic resource Futurama Wiki, a brain slug is “a species of space parasite that attaches its jelly-like body to the skull, presumably the brain of a human, and controls them. The specimen is green in color and consists of a translucent jelly-like body complete with two feelers and one large eyeball…The easiest way to tell if someone is infected would be the Brain Slug mass which sits atop of their head.”

Should you wish to make someone think he is infected, just perch one of these crocheted Brain Slugs on his noggin. Hilarity is sure to ensue.

This project makes me think of another amigurumi project – Baby Monsters by Allison Hoffman, aka CraftyIsCool. I made some in red for co-workers for Valentine’s Day, and called them “Love Monsters“. Naturally they were a big hit.

Star Trek laptop cozy

Star Trek laptop cozyLest you think I’m only all about Star Wars and Firefly, I thought I would feature some Star Trek love this week. And so I bring you a Laptop Cozy adorned with the Enterprise crew.

Katie at Punk Projects whipped this together as a home for her new laptop, where I believe it will be quite happy. Please note the apt name of her laptop – Voyager.

I wonder if she also installed a theme that speaks to her in Majel Barrett’s voice, a la the ship’s computer?

Jayne’s grenade

I am always pleased to find references to the tragically-short-lived, but epically-awesome TV series “Firefly“. I am of the opinion that any day with a little Firefly injected in it is a good day. Just the other night I had cause to exclaim, “Sure would be nice to have some grenades, dontcha think?”

With all the fanfare for Jayne Cobb’s hat, I was very impressed to see someone step outside the knitting box and go straight for the ammo! Kudos to Brian at StormtrooperGuy.

Jayne Cobb Hat and Scarf

Jayne Cobb hatsAs my first geekcraft-sharing post, I thought I would share one of my own projects, or actually a couple. As a proud Browncoat (fan of Joss Whedon‘s TV series “Firefly“), I of course knit the requisite Jayne Cobb hat – one for my husband, and one for my son. I used Dryope’s Jayne Cobb hat pattern for the hat, though there are many variations on the pattern.

My husband says it’s the warmest snow-shoveling hat he’s ever had. In fact, after shoveling one particularly cold day, he remarked that it was too bad that there wasn’t a matching scarf pattern, to keep his neck and face warm as well. Not one to let my crafting superpowers go to waste, I began designing a scarf immediately.

I consulted with my son and fellow Browncoat, and he thought the stripes should be “random” (rather like Jayne himself), so he devised the pattern of stripes, and how wide each stripe should be. I think the resulting pattern turned out almost like a contemporary version of the Dr Who scarf, which just gives it extra geek points, in my mind.

I stuck with the traditional colors of the Jayne Cobb hat – red(ish), orange(ish), and yellow. I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in Brick, Mustard, & Rust, so it would have easy care & handling.

Here’s a rough pattern for the Jayne Cobb scarf I came up with:

cast on in desired width (multiples of 6)
knit two rows of garter stitch
then work in a 3×2 rib (K3, P2) for remainder of scarf:
row 1: K3, P2
row 2: P3, K2
end with two rows of garter stitch
