Hot off the presses, this Doctor Who set of hoops by Chelsea Bloxsom from Love and a Sandwich was just finished yesterday. I love all her hoops made with fur and felt, and her numerous pieces of awesomeness all over the internet, but these deserve special mention, because I came across them this morning in my Facebook feed, when my sister shared them with my niece. As a newly-obsessed Whovian, I appreciate the way that Doctor Who is making us geeky mums cool again.

No Face Embroidery Hoop

I was taking an animation class just for fun at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design when Spirited Away came to the USA.  That was more than a decade ago, but I remember hearing about the movie, pining to see the moving, and begging some friends to come along and watch it with me. We saw it at the beautiful Landmark Oriental Theater and I can’t remember a time before or since that I was so riveted by a movie.  If you haven’t seen it, I implore you: Stop what you are doing right now and go see it.

It is certainly difficult to pick a favorite character from the movie, but one of the most memorable is surely No Face. A strange, silent spirit overcome by greed. Unable to verbally communicate on his own, we’re left to ponder his intentions and motivation.

Love & a Sandwich (aka Chelsea Bloxsom) captures this unusual character in an embroidery hoop: the distinct mask paired with an amorphous body, among spa tokens and cold coins. Absolutely perfect.

Selecting a project from Love and a Sandwich was rough, by the way. She’s got a million projects (OK, maybe a few dozen) on her Flickr that made me FREAK OUT, but No Face takes the cake.

Zany to the Max! Yakko Warner & The Wheel of Morality

I’m just coming off of a 15 day stretch of working some long days, but I am back finally! And to kick off my days of a regular schedule again, we’ve got Yakko Warner and the Wheel of Morality.

Fluffypants from Ontario, posted her and her husband’s Halloween costumes over at Craftster. This year, they decided to go back to one of their childhood favorites and do costumes from the “Animaniacs!” They couldn’t decide what pair of costumes to do, but randomly watching clips, for some reason they thought the Wheel of Morality would be hilarious. They decided on Yakko for her, and a sandwich board featuring the Wheel of Morality for her husband. He was being camera shy, so she couldn’t get him to pose for pictures.

For Yakko, Fluffypants bought the black shirt, but everything else was homemade. Her feet and gloves were reused from a costume a few years ago. She bought fleece and made a giant pair of brown pants and the belt, and made the buckle out of fun foam. The head was made from a plastic canvas frame, chair cushion foam, and fleece. She stuffed floral wire in each ear so they were poseable. It was a pretty fun costume but she had absolutely no field of vision!

The Wheel is built on top of a lazy Susan so it would spin, shown here in this video.

A Hoopla of Robots!

Over on Craftster, there has been a great big HOOPLA! Actually, this Hoopla has been going on for a couple of years now and has not lost momentum like so many other crafty trends. The term applies to any sort of needle work framed in an embroidery hoop regardless of size.

I have to say this particular set of Hoopla is some of my all time favorites. It combines R2D2 and C3PO, needlework and felt. How awesome is that??! Loveandasandwich stitched up these wonderfully detailed pieces bringing our favorite ‘bots to life. She even gives us a bit of insight as to her creative process towards the end of her original post.

Newspaper Box Robot

I was in downtown Hillsboro, Oregon last week and saw this mini-spectacle on Main St., right in front of a sandwich shop. Someone used dryer vents, cardboard, tin foil, duct tape, and a little crafty ingenuity to robotify this plain old Hillsboro Argus newspaper box! I was totally charmed, and my two-year-old LOVED it.
