Join the Zompocalypse by Making Your Own Zombie Plushie!

I just spent the weekend selling my handmade goodies at TopCon, a small pop-culture convention in Topeka, KS. One of the guests, Mike Mundy, was a zombie on The Walking Dead, so there was a lot of zombies hanging around this weekend. All those undead inspired me to share this great tutorial on making your own zombie plushie on the blog Heidi Boyd. This tutorial offers more inspiration than actual techniques, but if you’re familiar with basic hand sewing skills, you’ll have no problem making your little Zombie Plushie friend to hunt down brains with. You could even mix it up a bit and use different colored fleece, felt scraps, and embroidery floss. The tutorial offers up a great, basic starting point for your imagination to take over. Captain Janeway Plushie

Supermutts of New York recently posted this plushie of Capt. Kathryn Janeway from “Star Trek: Voyager.” She was made for the “Flaptain” (Fleet Captain) of Supermutt’s husbands Star Trek Fan group. Janeway is her hero so that’s why Supermutts made her a mini Janeway.

She used a pattern for Spock and Kirk by a lovely etsy seller and then made her own adjustments.

Kathryn Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew, is a fictional character in the Star Trek franchise. As the captain of the Starfleet starship USS Voyager, she was the lead character on the television series “Star Trek: Voyager,” and later a Starfleet admiral, as seen in the 2002 feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis.” Although other female captains had appeared in previous Star Trek episodes and other media, she is the only one to serve as the central character of a Star Trek TV

Plushy DIY Roundup!

This week on Spoonflower, the contest involves original designs for mythical creature plushies, and when I saw Gila’s UniPug design I knew I had to share it on Geek Crafts. You can purchase your own DIY UniPug Plushy Pattern on a variety of fabrics (I recommend Spoonflower’s new Minky fabric for this one because it’s super soft and cuddly, like the ever elusive UniPug himself) in Cross The Lime’s Spoonflower shop. The design fits on a fat quarter and costs about $17 with shipping.

If you’re more of a cat person, you might enjoy making your very own Grumpy Cat with this Instructable by username elewis03, complete with step-by-step instructions and pictures, as well as a rudimentary pattern you can download for free. This little guy would make an excellent cubicle pal at the office, don’t you think?

If grumpy kitties and mythical unipugs aren’t your thing, how about a Frog Prince named Ferdinand from Abby Glassenberg’s blog While She Snaps? This DIY has a free downloadable pattern along with excellent pictures and instructions. Hobbit Craft: Sting Plush

A group of 15 of us descended upon a local dine-and-watch movie theater last weekend for the latest (and last) installment of the Hobbit movie trilogy. Definitely epic eye candy – I mean, Legolas dashing up that crumbling tower? Forget about it!

Bilbo’s trusty blade Sting made an appearance in the film, and served him well. If you would like a decidedly less pointy version with a high cute factor to brandish about, check out Choly Knight’s plushie pattern.

I agree with Choly about what makes this project unique: “the real kicker is the bit of satin stitching I did in glow-in-the-dark thread to simulate Sting’s ability to glow blue when orcs are near.” She says the glow-in-the-dark effect makes it great for pillow fights – which makes me want to make it even more, just to test out!

Have you seen the Battle of the Five Armies yet? What did you think? We did enjoy it, but my husband didn’t think the story merited three full movies.

Purple Tentacle Plushie

I’m really into making felt plushies at the moment. I’ve been surprised at how easy they are… well, compared with what I expected. This week I decided to take the plunge and try a Purple Tentacle from LucasArts’ Day of the Tentacle, and boy – am I pleased with how he turned out!

And since I’m nice, I whipped up a pattern so that other people can recreate the little guy – check out the link below. Printed on A4 this will give you a tentacle that stands about 18 cm (7 inches) tall, but there’s nothing to stop you scaling this dude up!

Just don’t leave your 6-foot version unattended otherwise he might just try to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!

How to Train Your Dragon – Toothless Plush

One of my favorite movies is How To Train Your Dragon – I especially love Toothless, the Nightfury dragon that Hiccup befriends over the course of the movie. One of the problems for Toothless fans everywhere, though, was the fact that the official plush for the movie looked downright ugly. (I’ll spare you all and not link to it here!) nooby-banana on DeviantArt, however, created a solution to that problem.

This Toothless Plush looks much better than the official movie plush! There’s a tutorial for creating a Toothless of your very own that starts here – it’s split into seven parts, and is pretty easy to follow. I’ve even made my own Toothless following the pattern – and while it was definitely time-consuming, it was worth all the work.
