steampunk-goggles-sq-320x320

Steampunk cosplay can get expensive in a hurry.  Fortunately, DarrenWasHere.com has got you covered with this great tutorial on making steampunk goggles with stuff you can find at Dollar Tree.  You’ll find step-by-step instructions with pictures, and there’s even a bit of a “post-mortem” on the tutorial where Darren describes some things he might do differently next time, and even some suggestions on different materials.  This tutorial is a great starting point and would be easy to customize to match your own cosplay, so be sure to check it out and give it a try!

Steampunk Dark Phoenix

6IGteoK

Tholins posted a gallery of her Steampunk Dark Phoenix costume over on Imgur recently. She got this costume done just in time for Balticon 2015, and her boyfriend talked her into doing the masquerade.

There is a staggering amount of information that goes along with her gallery. It’s almost along the lines of a good tutorial (too much info to include here in this post), because she talks about the types of material she used for each piece.

Wait a minute.  That’s a Burger King crown! Not a steampunk crown!

So, if you’re looking for some cool fabric for your next project, give Spoonflower a try! They print all their fabrics on demand, and you can order as little as an 8″ sample for $5.  They have over 30 different types of fabrics to choose from.  And, you can also order many of the designs on wrapping paper and self-adhesive wallpaper too.  How cool is that?  What’s even better is that Spoonflower is an American company that uses eco-friendly inks and printing processes.  In fact, they just introduced a new fabric made from 20% recycled materials, their eco-canvas.

Steampunk AT-AT Liquor Cabinet

Vancouver-based artist and woodworker Colin Johnson has completed “The Emperor’s Cabinet,” a large handcrafted wet bar in the shape of an AT-AT Walker from the Star Wars films. This behemoth is decked out from top to bottom with brass trim and guns, a usable bar with shelves and a mirrored interior. It was recently on display in Vancouver at the Hot Art Wet City art gallery for May LaForge Be With You, a group art show tribute to Star Wars and Star Trek. It’s made of high density plywood, mahogany veneer, solid brass trim, and glass.

Goli Mohammadi over at the Make Blog recently reported, “One of the coolest things I saw at Vancouver Mini Maker Faire last weekend was The Emperor’s Cabinet, a gorgeous, meticulously crafted, steampunk-inspired AT-AT handmade by Vancouver artist and ‘woodbutcher’ Colin Johnson. When I first saw it on setup day, the front doors were closed. I coveted it from the instant I saw it, but then Colin opened the doors and I saw that it was a liquor cabinet, which made it even cooler.”

Steampunk Lightsaber Awesomeness

Eventually I will stop posting about Jen Yates and her Lady Vadore costume, but I’m so intrigued! The pieces all look so cool—I can’t wait to see the final result. Anyway, in addition to the steampunk Darth Vader mask/helmet tutorial, she’s now posted a tutorial for a similarly steampunk lightsaber. Which, incidentally, doubles as a nifty nightlight. And, really, who doesn’t want a steampunk lightsaber nightlight?
