#NerdsCraftItBetter Swap Closing Soon!

Nerds Craft It Better swap logo

A heads up that Rae McIntosh of Rae’s Making It is hosting a “Nerds Craft It Better” swap, with signups ending January 15th. At last report, 161 people are participating, making it quite the geek crafty party!

I’ve seen some of the Instagram posts coming in with the #NerdsCraftItBetter hashtag, and it’s been interesting seeing all the different fandoms. Quite a few of the classics, like Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Harry Potter, but also some new-to-me book series, so I’m looking forward to seeing the finished projects.

I’m signed up, though I admit to feeling a bit intimidated. Even with all my years of geekery and crafting, this is my first swap! I am looking to challenge myself crafting-wise this year, so I thought this was a good first step.

Have you participated in a craft swap? How did it go for you?

Woodland Rabbit Hoop

Roler posted this cute hoop to Craftster recently. She made it for her partner in the Woodland Creature & Enchanted Forest Swap. Her partner wanted an original creature that took on parts of its surroundings as part of its body.

A maple seed was created in the bunny’s ear, a leaf went onto it’s chest and a lotus flower became it’s tail.

Bride of Frankenstein Hoop

336241_15Jul16_IMG_8452

This is how I feel right now….AAAAAGGGHHH!!! I realized today the weekend got away from me (I don’t even have a good crafting reason for it!) but when I saw this hoop posted over at Craftster, I knew it was meant to be here.

Roler, of both Washington State and Japan, made this Bride of Frankenstein hoop in the monster swap, because her partner had a great retro comic style picture of Bride of Frankenstein on her pinterest, so Roler decided to try to make a felt version of it.

The stitching around the eyes is double-strand regular sewing thread, rather than embroidery floss. The pink and white of the mouth are tiny pieces of felt, while the lips are also regular sewing thread.

For anyone interested in learning to embroidery similar to this piece, I have to recommend Lime Riot’s blog. She does a lot of felt and wool stitching and it’s good place to click through for ideas and inspiration.

Fatewineroses of southern California, recently posted this little hoop to Craftster. It was made for the Three Tiny Movie Things swap (Round 5).

This little hoop is an embroidered portrait of Igor (Marty Feldman) from “Young Frankenstein.” If you’ve never seen this example of cinematic perfection, then check out the trailer. But seriously, if you haven’t seen it yet, then why not? It’s Gene Wilder in a Mel Brooks movie!!

“Adventure Time” Mini Quilt

336241_26Feb16_IMG_6966

Roler recently posted this mini quilt on Craftster that she made. She made it for a cartoon-themed swap. Her partner loves “Adventure Time,” so Roler decided to make her a mini quilt wall art with her four favorite characters.

For anyone not familiar with the show, the characters, starting clockwise from top left, are Finn the Human, Lumpy Space Princess, Peppermint Butler, and Jake the Dog.

Roler said it’s a beginner quilt for her and about the size of the average place mat.

Sweetums from “The Muppets” as a Messenger Bag

159517_23May12_120519_0001

NH822, a poster from Michigan, posted this messenger bag she made of Sweetums from “The Muppets,” in a Jim Henson-themed swap in 2012.

The eyes are Teesha Moore style patches and the strap is a result of weaving some fuzzy yarn. The eyebrow was crocheted and then sewn on, the teeth are felt cones and the nose and lip are stuffed fleece.

Sweetums is a very large, imposing and hairy Muppet ogre about nine feet tall. Despite appearing menacing, he is often depicted as friendly and harmless.
