Geeky Confection Box Makeovers

Geeky cupcake box makeover by Lisa Kay Tate

Got a party occasion coming up, and looking for a geeky party favor or decorations? Lisa Kay Tate of Minion Feeding 101, and contributor to Geek Mom, has ya covered!

She offers a geek-tastic round-up of five ways you can put your crafting superpowers to use, spanning a variety of fandoms. Using plain cupcake or bonbon boxes you can find in the baking section of most major craft stores, she gave them each a makeover to depict the Tesseract Infinity Stone, Shakri cubes (which she calls Countdown Cubes) from Doctor Who, Minecraft Creepers, Rubik’s Cubes, and Portal Companion Cubes. Her post includes printables downloads and links to templates, so be sure to check it out!

How have you used your crafting superpowers to create geeky party favors or decorations? Please share with a comment below!

Doctor Who TARDIS Chair

tardis chair

Every room needs a good chair to tie it together, and it should also have a conversation piece. Why can’t those be combined into one solid piece of awesome furniture? In this case, they have been!

WittsWhimsy on Etsy, of Cary, IL, created this one of a kind TARDIS chair. The wood trim on this Begere Regency chair was terribly worn, so it was sanded and painted black. The front fabric is hand painted Cobalt blue shantung silk. The old cushion was replaced, and handmade the piping throughout was created for this chair. The cushion was made of four inch thick memory foam.

Fortunately for WittsWhimsy, the chair did sell already. Unfortunately for us, the chair did sell already and there’s not another one available.

A Very QWERTY Birthday

My boyfriend’s birthday is this weekend, and I’m getting him a new smartphone(!) which has been quite the ordeal.  And apparently while I have been transfixed on trying to select and purchase the perfect gift on the sly, my shiftiness has become evident to my boyfriend, who smugly mentioned this afternoon that he “knew” I was throwing him a surprise party this weekend.  While this revelation was quite distant from reality, I acted like he’d caught me (to throw him off my smartphone scent)…but now I have to throw him a party, too.  So since everything in my life has been smartphone-centric for the past few days, I thought: Why not theme the party around….emojis?!

Fortunately, the decoration portion of my party planning was made incredibly simple when I came across these spot-on DIY Emoji Balloons from Studio DIY, which I’ll definitely be whipping up this weekend:

…and these hilarious Dancing Girls piñatas, also from Studio DIY:
A Very QWERTY Birthday2
Whew!  I’d better be receiving beaucoup smiley, heart, and kissy-filled texts next week for all this. :)

Plushy DIY Roundup!

UniPug

This week on Spoonflower, the contest involves original designs for mythical creature plushies, and when I saw Gila’s UniPug design I knew I had to share it on Geek Crafts.  You can purchase your own DIY UniPug Plushy Pattern on a variety of fabrics (I recommend Spoonflower’s new Minky fabric for this one because it’s super soft and cuddly, like the ever elusive UniPug himself) in Cross The Lime’s Spoonflower shop.  The design fits on a fat quarter and costs about $17 with shipping.

GrumpyCat

If you’re more of a cat person, you might enjoy making your very own Grumpy Cat with this Instructable by username elewis03, complete with step-by-step instructions and pictures, as well as a rudimentary pattern you can download for free.  This little guy would make an excellent cubicle pal at the office, don’t you think?

FrogPrince

If grumpy kitties and mythical unipugs aren’t your thing, how about a Frog Prince named Ferdinand from Abby Glassenberg’s blog While She Snaps? This DIY has a free downloadable pattern along with excellent pictures and instructions.  While you’re there, you should check out the other free plushy patterns on Abby Glassenberg’s site–super cute!

I’ll Be in My Bunk with Jayne

Jayne Cobb chibi plush by Vicious Pretty

In honor of Adam Baldwin’s birthday on Friday (February 27th), I wanted to share something beyond the iconic hat he wore as Jayne Cobb in “Firefly.” We’ve shared a number of different variations of the Jayne Cobb hat over the years, such as a Doctor Who version, a scarf version, a cupcake version, and a lip balm cozy version.

Today I bring you the plushie version – as in, sitting atop a cute Jayne Cobb chibi plush, as created by Cristina, aka ViciousPretty.

Cristina shared her creation over on DeviantArt, where she also has an extensive gallery of other adorable plushie creations, such as Gandalf, Namor, and a number of Mass Effect characters.

Cristina’s Jayne plushie is so cute and cunning, I just want to take him right to my bunk and cuddle. What character have you created in plush form, or have plans to attempt?

Also, be sure to wish Adam a happy birthday on Friday via Twitter!
