Knit a Captain Marvel Sweater

I’m am starting quite the collection of sweaters I want to knit because there keep being awesome patterns that I stumble across. Most recently it was coming across a finished Captain Marvel sweater. Then a little while ago, the knitter put up a chart to help make your very own.

What can I say I’m easy to please. Give me a nice bright nerdy sweater and I’m done for. Look at this sweater.

Introducing Beth Lynn!

bethlynnHello all!  I figured that since I’m brand new here, I may as well introduce myself!  (And introduce one of my most favorite projects, as well.)  I’ll be posting every Sunday afternoon, sharing my favorite geeky crafts from around the Internet!

As you may already have noticed, my name’s Beth Lynn.  I live with my husband Bryan, as well as four betta fish and a ridiculous collection of My Little Ponies, in beautiful Bloomington, Indiana.  I’m working on a second masters degree, in Information Science, and when I’m not nose deep in homework, I’m doing some sort of awesome geeky craft project!  I’ve been geeky as long as I can remember – I was an early reader (my mom claims I started reading before I was 2!), I’ve been playing video games since the tender age of five, and my mom was a Trekkie, so I’ve always been surrounded by wonderful nerdy things.  I’ve also been crafting since I was tiny, making tiny puppets when I was 8 and making doll clothes when I was 12.  As I got older, I started making bigger projects, like blankets, stuffed animals, and costumes!

Knit Your Own Superhero, or Stormtrooper, or Hobbit

nerdknitter_spidy
Nerd Knitting on Tumblr has a series of patterns for dolls, across a variety of fandoms. But what caught my eye was one of the most recent posts. With Great Knitting Comes Great Responsibility.

Spider-Man has always been one of my favorite superheroes. So I was even more pleased when I wandered over to the tumblr and found characters from Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Batman, The Hobbit, and even Captain Jack…Sparrow.  The pattern is worked flat then sown up and stuffed to make the doll.  The patterns build up from one another, so I’d say read a couple before you get started, but this is mentioned in each one. So get your needles and  ‘Let’s put a smile on that face’.

Tutorial: Needle Felted Solar System Mobile

Needle Felted Solar System

I’ve never actually tried needle felting myself, but this is such a wonderful use of the craft that I am definitely going to give it a go sometime. Check out this Needle Felted Solar System Mobile over on It’s a Knit House.

There’s a set of instructions for making your own Needle Felted Solar System Mobile. Although obviously, it’s not quite to scale. If you made a 2 inch diammeter version of the Earth in a scale model, the Sun would have to be 18 feet across, and you’d need 22 miles to fit the whole thing in, including orbits (or 29 miles if you want to include Pluto).

But for illustrative purposes this is an awesome geeky science craft! I want one.

Winter is Coming: You’ll Need Mittens

Specifically the Game of  Throne s House Mitt Kits.  Be you, Stag, Lion, Wolf, Kracken, Flower, or Dragon. There is a mitt kit for you.  These kits sold by The Yarn Cafe  make it so you can knit up your own favorite house to keep the chill away. The kit includes the pattern for the house of your choice and enough yarn to make the gloves in the size of your choice.

And as they don’t have thumbs I think they would do quite well for keeping that spring and fall chill at bay before we whip out the big guns.  So grab your needles and wait for the shipment to arrive and get knitting. Possibly as you watch Season 3.  And perhaps visit the designer Anna Richardson/ One Hand Knits on Ravelry, where she has other patterns, and a few other geeky nods.

Star Wars Pillow and Blanket

Star Wars pillow and blanket

In just a year, I’m going to be finished with college. Soon, I’ll have to decide what to do with the rest of my life! Every time I see a baby in a pram or stroller, I squee with delight, so little geeky addition sounds just lovely. Young children are a great inspiration for crafts. I honestly can’t wait to turn our study into a Nintendo-themed bedroom and start finger-painting Pokémon with the little ones.
