Live Long and Prosper, Baby

Well, Halloween is over. The pumpkin flavored everything season is over, let the peppermint flavored everything season begin. And I don’t know about all of you people, but it seems like my friends have caught a serious case of baby fever. This leaves me trying to come up with baby gifts for everyone, and in that search, I stumbled across this adorable onesie.

Star Trek

Based on the Star Trek: The Next Generation’s command uniform, Leigh of Fun Things to Do While You’re Waiting created this onesie from two t-shirts and a pattern she found. She used small round buttons for the pips, and created the comm-badge out of sculpey clay. This gift would be perfect for any Trekkie and their next generation (hehe), or a gift from a nerdy aunt or uncle. So head on over to the walkthrough and get to sewing!

DIY Halloween Costume: Captain America

Captain America costume

So how is your Halloween costume coming along? I actually have a Halloween costume party to go to this year, and think I may just go easy on myself with a premade Star Trek uniform that I already have, unless I’m inspired by something else I happen along. In case you’re still looking for inspiration, perhaps this Captain America costume is just the thing?

Michele of The Scrap Shoppe provides easy step-by-step instructions for converting a simple children’s sweat set into heroic form, and I would think it would be just as easy to apply to adult-size sweats. I love her idea of masking off the star shape for painting, though it might look neat with a white felt star hand-stitched on, too.

Hello From Grace and Crocheted Hobbit Feet

Grace as EowynHello fellow geeky crafters! I’m new to the GeekCrafts family, and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Grace and I’ll be posting on Fridays. I currently reside in Colorado with my husband, Jim, and our cat, Pepper Potts. My first true geek love is Lord of the Rings and the works of Tolkien in general (Roverandom, anyone?), as you can see from my attempt at an Eowyn costume here. I also love dragons, Disney, and Doctor Who, and my husband is attempting to teach me about Star Trek and X-Files. I am currently working on a TARDIS blanket, trying to make a Galadriel costume for Halloween/the next Hobbit movie premiere, attempting a steampunk version of Commander Lt. Riker for my husband, and hopefully making a steampunk Tinkerbell costume for myself in time for the next Anomaly Con.

Today, I’ll be showing one of my own tutorials that I am very proud of. When the Hobbit premiere rolled around last December, I knew I had to go in costume. I found a nice pattern for a skirt and bodice, but couldn’t find any hobbit feet that I liked. Having learned how to crochet all of three days beforehand, I decided to try and crochet my own hobbit feet using a crocheted sock tutorial video I found online. And, lo and behold, it worked!

On my blog, HappilyGrim (the only portmanteau of Grace and Jim that worked), I try and give directions both in stitches, and in relation to what part of the slipper is being created (i.e., 10 stitches, or however many to cover the tips of your toes). Spock Bacon Art

Jesse Azarian of Plainfield, VT has painted two portraits of Spock from Star Trek: TOS that are pretty interesting: he’s contemplating a slice of bacon.

Each of the paintings are 12″ x 15″, acrylic on Masonite, and are available in Jesse’s Etsy shop for $250 each. And yes, Vulcans are vegetarians, so maybe that’s why Spock is so interested in the bacon. He’s never had it before.

Steampunk AT-AT Liquor Cabinet

Vancouver-based artist and woodworker Colin Johnson has completed “The Emperor’s Cabinet,” a large handcrafted wet bar in the shape of an AT-AT Walker from the Star Wars films. This behemoth is decked out from top to bottom with brass trim and guns, a usable bar with shelves and a mirrored interior. It was recently on display in Vancouver at the Hot Art Wet City art gallery for May LaForge Be With You, a group art show tribute to Star Wars and Star Trek. It’s made of high density plywood, mahogany veneer, solid brass trim, and glass.

Goli Mohammadi over at the Make Blog recently reported, “One of the coolest things I saw at Vancouver Mini Maker Faire last weekend was The Emperor’s Cabinet, a gorgeous, meticulously crafted, steampunk-inspired AT-AT handmade by Vancouver artist and ‘woodbutcher’ Colin Johnson. When I first saw it on setup day, the front doors were closed. I coveted it from the instant I saw it, but then Colin opened the doors and I saw that it was a liquor cabinet, which made it even cooler.”

COSPLAY: Build Your Own Borg

Featured recently on StarTrek.com was a guest poster, Eric Hall, who detailed the process he went through to create his elaborate Borg costume. He’s apparently won numerous costume contests with his, and thousands in prizes. You can easily see why – this costume is crazy detail-oriented.

I love that he “thought like a Borg” and used found items from thrift shops, surplus stores, and yard sales, and just keeps adding to it. For instance, the left arm includes a large tube from a leaf blower, and a toy robot claw — the claw even opens and closes. He also added a small push-button motor from a toy so he makes a motorized sound when he walks.

I can imagine the stares he draws at cons – I know I’d give him a clear berth!
