Tom Servo polymer clay necklace

Tom Servo polymer clay necklaceRobot roll call!”

Oh, how I miss Mystery Science Theater 3000: the bad movies, the spaceship shenanigans, the cute robots mouthing off.

Looks like I’m not the only one. Craftster member motoredxheart sculpted a wee polymer clay Tom Servo. I love how she used a clear bead to get just the right gumball machine-head look to him.

You can snag your own at her Etsy shop, Sweet Geek, and set him up in front of your iPod to heckle mini-sized movies.

‘Ello!

I’m Lauren Lynne, another new writer excited to be a part of Geek Crafts.  I’m a Knitter and all around geek.  I’ve knit more Harry Potter scarves than I care to mention, and recently started designing my own patterns.  I take inspiration from geeky books, movies, and life in general.  I’m a bibliophile with a preference for fantasy novels.  My current favorites are Jim Butcher and Patrick Rothfuss.  You can check out my thoughts on knitting and pop culture on my blog, The Knitting Bibliophile.

New Kid on the Block

Hi! I’m very excited to be joining the Geek Crafts crew! I spend my time in mostly sunny Southern California working as a health care professional, occasionally crafting and quite frequently geeking out over tv shows, movies, science, Harry Potter, zombies and more.

As for crafting, I enjoy sewing tote bags, especially with kawaii Japanese fabrics, crocheting amigurumi hamsters and making pom-pom hamsters with a variety of personalities (See “Super Hamster” to the left). I’ve self published three books of poetry and photos inspired by my love of various rodents. Also, I’ve been a vendor at local craft fairs and San Diego Comic-Con with the Tired Girl Collective.

I’m looking forward to finding lots of awesome geek crafts to share with you.

Sci-Fine Art, Humor and Time Machines with Rik Livingston

There aren’t a lot of nice things about living in the desert, at least not until Fall/Winter time, but one nice thing about living here is the amazing Crossroads Cafe and Tavern, where I was having breakfast when the painting to the left caught my eye. I took in the various pieces by the artist I would later discover was the one Rik Verlin Livingston, and I knew I had to track him down and introduce my Geek Crafters to his “Sci-Fine Art“.

We communicated in e-mails a few times before I met Rik at an artist reception held at the Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce, which featured more of his work, to include some really great comic books. He was friendly, funny, and seemed to handle the attention (and the controversy surrounding one of his pieces) very well. I was really excited to be able to ask a few questions about his craft, his feelings on censorship, and of course, time travel.

Back to the Future Peg People

Back to the Future Peg People

We *just* watched all three Back to the Future movies (how awful was the second one? And any suggestions for 80s movies that are appropriate for a 10-year-old?), so I was really excited to see these Marty McFly and Doc Brown peg people, complete with suspenders and jean jacket. Check out RandomlyGenerated‘s Etsy shop for these and more geeky goodness.

Inconsolable by Shaheed Shabazz

Inconsolable is not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. Before I received my copy in the mail, author Shaheed Shabazz warned me that the book was “graphic and twisted” and I smirked to myself, thinking “He doesn’t know me very well, graphic and twisted is what I do“. I was not prepared in the least for the gore-filled, horrifying ride that calls itself Inconsolable.

There were times, while reading this revenge tale full of drugs, torture and mind tricks, that I couldn’t put the book down–there were other times when I was so horrified by the images Shabazz so skillfully painted that I had to put the book down to give myself a break from the intensity. The story starts out calmly enough, introducing the reader to Sean Stiles, a character who at once seems unassuming and noble. Shortly after we meet him, he meets a group of meth heads and loses his life. The story picks up down the line, where our meth addicted murderers have sworn each other to secrecy, gotten clean and moved on. Or so they thought.

Although they were sure no one would “miss” Sean Stiles it becomes clear that someone did, and that someone is intent on ripping apart their lives, and their bodies. With scenes straight out of a Japanese horror flick, Shabazz throws us into a world that is run by the Blue Giant, where justice is carried out slice by slice, slowly but surely, and where no one is off-limits. The book will leave you shaken, terrified to close your eyes, and regretting every wrong you have ever committed in your life. It’s a great read–if you’re brave enough.

See what Shaheed Shabazz had to say to Geek Crafts after the jump.
