Knit: Longer on the Outside Scarf

Unless you are/were one of the lucky ones to get into a World Tour Screening we are nearly at the premiere of a new season of Doctor Who. And  we know how I feel about having fitting crafts for the times right? So why not a re-imaging of the fourth doctor’s scarf with some illusion knitting to go with it.  Designer, Franklin Habit, has done just that.

Illusion/Shadow knitting is a technique, where using two colors and the basic knit stitches of Knit & Purl (seriously everything is built on those two guys). You use two colors and alternating your knit and purl stitches in pattern to create an image that is only visible at certain angles.  A fun way to have a surprise picture appear.  You can  see this effect in the scarf photo.

I’ve always been torn about making myself a 4th doctor scarf, but this? This will have to happen.  Head over to Raverly to purchase you own copy.

Knit Some Chewie Mittens

So there is a movie franchise that is getting more movies . Something about a long time ago in a galaxy far away. Or so I’ve heard.  Raverly Designer Therese Sharp has designed a pair of Chewie Mittens.  With SDCC happening right now and more cons approaching, what better then knitting some geek love? The pattern is available on Raverly.

ProcrastaStitch

ProcrastaStitch has recently hit the nerdy cross-stitch market. They have fun patterns and book marks and other geekery over on their Etsy shop.

They also have a fun tumblr where you can keep up to date with them and their many projects. I love needlework and I’m always happy when I see needlework+fandom.

After the cut we have a few words from Emma and Lyndsey themselves! Continue reading

Even Your Ta-Ta’s Can Be Geeks

Xandrigirly over at Craftster posted the greatest bra of ALL TIME (all time, all time). Sorry, I just felt like it needed an echo there for the importance of her posting. She made her own superhero-themed bra!

bra

She describes herself as a geeky artist and designer (she works in a craft store and teaches kids how to sew), but as someone who can’t sew without swearing, I’m seeing some real talent in the creation of this bra.

Ladies, this might be something we need to look into: most commercial bra patterns rarely hit a DD cup (not that I personally am that well endowed), but Xandrigirly researched it, and found a few independent pattern makers. She went with a pattern from MakeBra, mostly because it includes a foam lined cup. She said she only spent about $25 on this bra…and now I’m thinking I need a Spider-Man bra!

Geek Knitting: Geek-a-Long Blanket

Geek-a-long Blanket squares by Megan-Anne Llama

Greetings geekcrafters! Today I wanted to share with you an ongoing geek project  – Latte and Llama’s Geek-a-Long blanket.

They are releasing one geek-themed square knitting pattern each week, including references to Sherlock, Battlestar Galactica, Harry Potter, the DC universe, and Avatar. They have also posted a FAQ for the project. The patterns are free, but they are encouraging donations to Child’s Play.

Like any good “a-long” project, it’s fun to interact with others who are working on the same project. It looks like this one has some good participation on Ravelry, with 500+ members in the group.

What fandoms or images would you include in a geeky afghan?
