Creeper World – new RTS/defense game

creeper world
Ok, this one is totally NOT crafty at all, but a new PC/MAC game is absolutely geeky. The only reason I’m posting this is because a friend of mine created this game. The game is called Creeper World and it’s a RTS/Tower Defense type game for PC and MAC. You can find out more and download a free demo at http://knucklecracker.com. I typically dislike RTS games but I played through the first three levels right before I wrote this and enjoyed it thoroughly. I’ll be going back to finish the demo.

She offers a geek-tastic round-up of five ways you can put your crafting superpowers to use, spanning a variety of fandoms. Using plain cupcake or bonbon boxes you can find in the baking section of most major craft stores, she gave them each a makeover to depict the Tesseract Infinity Stone, Shakri cubes (which she calls Countdown Cubes) from Doctor Who, Minecraft Creepers, Rubik’s Cubes, and Portal Companion Cubes. Her post includes printables downloads and links to templates, so be sure to check it out!

How have you used your crafting superpowers to create geeky party favors or decorations? Please share with a comment below!

Halloween: Minecraft Jack-o-lanterns

Minecraft Creeper Pumpkins

‘Tis the season of ghosts and ghouls and creepy jack-o-lanternsHalloween is just over a month away! What could be creepier than a Minecraft Creeper jack-o-lantern? Brenda Ponnay has you covered with an easy tutorial for making your own creepy Creeper pumpkins (or other vegetable).

I thought it was interesting that she was inspired by the green produce from her local farmers’ market, and that she used other vegetables in addition to pumpkins. Who would have thought of a Halloween green pepper?? Clever!

Sadly, my kids are past the days of decorating pumpkins, though I remember some fun Pokemon pumpkins from back in the day. What will you be carving your pumpkin into this year?

Friday Roundup: Minecraft!

Today is the day.  I can hardly believe that Minecraft is not a full game yet, but it’s true.  Today Mojang AB, the creators of Minecraft, will be releasing the official Minecraft 1.0 version live at MineCon in Las Vegas.  I wish I could be there.  However, since I can’t be there, lets look at some truly awesome Minecraft inspired crafts.

To start things off, take a look at this Creeper Purse by Blindmoon on Etsy.  Now you can look stylish and still send everyone around you into PTSD induced seizures.

Or how about this absolutely adorable Minecraft Chicken made out of Fimo Clay.  StarPhoenixx from Etsy makes tons of cute clay figurines but this chicken made me squeak.

We all know how much I love coffee cozies.  I can’t get enough of the things, yet strangely I don’t use them on my actual coffee.  Either way, you have to love this Creeper Coffee Cozy by LilacsLovables on Etsy.  She calls it a “Mug Cozy” but I don’t think you can even USE mugs for anything other than coffee…right?

How are you supposed to dig around in your mines without the proper tools?  Well, diamonds are expensive, so how about these Perler Bead Diamond Magnets by GumballNinja on Etsy?

Have you ever looked at your tissue paper dispenser and thought to yourself, “What am I doing with my life?”.  Me too.  You can solve that problem by pimping out your dispenser with a cool Minecraft Grass Cube Tissue Box Cover!  But where could you get one?  How about from sockmonkeyfun on Etsy?

I bet that, like me, you don’t have any friends.  What?  You do have friends…can you share?  No….right then.  Well, since you have SO MANY FRIENDS, I suppose you must collect them.  Why not add one more to the list, you friend hog.  This Minecraft Pet Wolf Statue, by DandelionBlow on Etsy, won’t ever pick you last for dodge ball…again.

Since you  have so many friends, why don’t you marry one?  All you need is a diamond ring like this Minecraft Inspired “Diamond” Ring by tinybackpack on Etsy.

Alright.  As usual, I have saved the best for last.  This Minecraft Plush Pig is Adorable.  I love it.  I want to own it.  ClosetMonsterstoys on Etsy make all kinds of awesome pop culture plushies, but this pig is just too awesome for words.

That’s it for this week.  I’m off to patiently refresh the Minecraft page until the full version is released.

London Comic Con – Saturday’s Cardboard heroes!

I saw some great work at London Comic Con today, and if I took your photo you can find it in my Picasa album here.

If I took your picture and you’re not featured here, don’t despair! check back later in the week to see if I mention you on Monday ;-).

This post is dedicated to the cardboard warriors! Those brave souls who slave over an old ikea box with nothing more than an inkjet printer, a glue gun, some paint,  and a rocking sense of humour to create the costume of their dreams:

Yea, that’s what I’m talking about! Think outside the box cosplayers, embrace the cardboard… or embrace the cardboard and step inside the box… meet Rubiks girl:

I just wanted to cuddle this cube-shaped-lady… to dress like something that’s not-at-all the shape of a person takes some work… well done!… here’s another cuboid wonder:

I asked him how easy it was to store a costume like that… he said he’d actually had to chop it in half to fit it in his car and then re-assemble it at the venue that morning… that takes dedication (and perhaps some duct tape).

Want all the pointy edges of a cube, but the maneuverability of a more anthropomorphic character… I got just the thing… try this:

Yup, a God among cardboard men, right?

“but I haven’t bought any furniture recently, the only cardboard box I’ve got is this one from my new kettle… ” – I’ve got the costume for you!

(there were, like, a billion creepers, but this was my favourite minecraft costume :-) )

When you’re ready to move on from cardboard boxes, you can foray into the mysterious world of papier mache and construct something beautiful like this:

He’s an Ice Lord, from 1970’s Pertwee Dr Who … I completely didn’t know that either… but the husbot educated me :-) he got very excited about this costume!..

But these are my favourite cardboard virtuosos from today. Throwing aside all considerations of practicality and the shape of a human being, this pac man duo are awesome on so many levels:

When I asked to take this photo the ‘ghost’ looked at me and asked “red or blue?!”… I was so confused… I just shouted back (we were in a crowd of people, not conducive to great photo-taking) “err, red!” … but of course… the ghost was double sided!

excellent costuming people, well done!

Don’t forget to keep checking back for more of my favourite costumes from the Con!

Were YOU at the Con too? you can use the Submit a Geekcraft link to show us your costume!

The Shadow Hare

the-shadow-hare

I find it my geekly duty to inform any Geek Crafts readers that haven’t already heard, about The Shadow Hare. The Shadow Hare is a real-life Watchman in Cincinnati, OH. Not much is known of the Shadow Hare, other than that the Cincinnati PD is a little confused as to how to deal with this masked avenger who is patrolling their streets. After reading the initial article on TMZ, I did a little research and found a couple other news stories featuring The Shadow Hare and, of course, his myspace page.

If you’re not in Cincinnati, don’t fret. A little more research, and I discovered that there is an allegience of masked avengers (The Allegiance of Super Heroes)  patrolling the streets. There is a Mr. Extreme in San Diego, CA and Wall Creeper in Colorado, along with many others who stay organized through the web.

Now, they may have taken The Watchmen a little too seriously, or maybe they are really awesome dudes trying to fight crime…but it’s unusual, and very geeky. And since they make their own costumes, very crafty. I love it. Absolutely love it.
