Finding Fellow Female Geek Bloggers

Female Geek Bloggers badge

Have you played around with Google+ yet? I’m not as active on there as I am on other networks, but I am a member of a few Communities. Communities are similar to Facebook Groups or website forums, where like-minded people gather to share resources and chat about whatever they’re interested in. One G+ Community I particularly enjoy is Female Geek Bloggers, moderated by Bree Brouer and The Nerdy Girlie.

With 300+ members, there are a wide variety topics discussed, including Doctor Who, cosplay, comics, movies, anime, gaming (both video and board), and even “geek therapy.” I really enjoy the breadth of discussions, and have been exposed to topics and people I wouldn’t have otherwise stumbled upon. I also love the sense of community there – all of us interested in geeky things, supporting blogging and sometimes marketing efforts of other geeky females.

Quite a few of the members are also crafters, so I get to see plenty of interesting geekcrafts. A few projects that have been shared in the Community:

Who are some of your favorite female geek bloggers to follow?

From Soccer Ball to Death Star

Mutantstar from Craftster recently posted about the Death Star chair she recently made for her son.

“On our way back from a nerdy boardgaming session, I saw this huge soccer ball in someone’s garbage, as we cruised pass I noticed it was a chair. I turned around and told my husband to load it up in the trunk, I’d fix this up, it was so interesting. Not two seconds after he loaded it up, I knew what I’d do; our son has recently discovered Star Wars and become a huge fan, he’d have a death star chair by the time I was finished.”

Introducing Beth Lynn!

bethlynnHello all!  I figured that since I’m brand new here, I may as well introduce myself!  (And introduce one of my most favorite projects, as well.)  I’ll be posting every Sunday afternoon, sharing my favorite geeky crafts from around the Internet!

As you may already have noticed, my name’s Beth Lynn.  I live with my husband Bryan, as well as four betta fish and a ridiculous collection of My Little Ponies, in beautiful Bloomington, Indiana.  I’m working on a second masters degree, in Information Science, and when I’m not nose deep in homework, I’m doing some sort of awesome geeky craft project!  I’ve been geeky as long as I can remember – I was an early reader (my mom claims I started reading before I was 2!), I’ve been playing video games since the tender age of five, and my mom was a Trekkie, so I’ve always been surrounded by wonderful nerdy things.  I’ve also been crafting since I was tiny, making tiny puppets when I was 8 and making doll clothes when I was 12.  As I got older, I started making bigger projects, like blankets, stuffed animals, and costumes!

New Geek Crafts Writer: Emma

Emma's Introduction

Hi there! You may have already seen my first post. I’m one of the new writers and you’ll hearing from me on Thursday morning. Time to formally introduce myself!

My name is Emma. I’m living with my gamer boyfriend and pet hamster Sasha near Amsterdam, The Netherlands and I’m majoring in bioinformatics. One day, I hope to cure the downfalls of old age, win a Nobel prize, become a loving mother and write a bestseller. (In no particular order.)

I’ve been a geek for as long as I remember, but only started crafting a few years ago. I hope working with all of you will give us the necessary inspiration and kick in the ass to make something beautiful! I love cooking and baking, perler beading, papercrafting, reading long, tedious science fiction and fantasy books, writing short, wacky science fiction and fantasy books, watching anime on my best friend The Beamer, going swimming and fiddling with clothing.

What will all those posts be about? Currently, I can’t get enough of Star Trek, but I also love Harry Potter, literature in general, Pokémon, retro gaming, anything made by or inspired by Japan, stuff you can eat, cartoons and everything science.

Mischief managed!

An Introduction

jennysortinghat Hi everyone, I’m Jenny, and I’m a new writer on geek crafts, so I thought I should introduce myself before I make my first ‘proper’ post! I will have a regular posting slot every Saturday morning!

(Photo credit to my sister, Kate, taken at the WB studio making of Harry Potter tour in London. Hey, Kate!)

I live in London, England (with my equally geeky boyfriend, Shaun) and as you may have guessed I am a massive geek and I love crafting! My favourite crafts are crochet, particularly amigurumi, and baking, but to be honest I like to dabble in a bit of everything, and I’m willing to try anything and everything once, but I have finally conceded that I am never going to be able to knit.

Geek wise, my greatest loves are Harry Potter and Studio Ghibli. I also love gaming (although I’m terrible at it, despite years of practice…!) my favourite games are currently Little Big Planet, Skylanders, Ni no Kuni, Alice Madness Returns and all the Lego games! Oh, and I can’t forget the old classics, Pokémon, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro!

I am also a massive science nerd. I have a degree in Genetics and am currently training to be a nurse in order to achieve my dream of becoming a Genetic Counsellor! I love all types of science, though, so there may be a fair few science-related geek crafts coming your way!

Of course, that’s not ALL of my geeky loves, but it gives you a taste of things to come…

Well, I think that is enough of an introduction. I hope you will enjoy my posts. Remember to check in every Saturday morning for my geeky crafty updates!!

Metroid To Go.. and other game pieces

Metroid To Go Gaming is not part of my geekness — well, except for Angry Birds.  But I do have friends who are quite proficient in various video games and so have heard the term Metroid bandied about amongst them occasionally.  However, I did not realize just how cute they could be until I spotted Ellen Kramer‘s series of plush keychains of various characters from video games.  For sale in her shop on Etsy called Smellestine, the key chains include Pokeman, Mario Star and Metroid.
