Amazingly Intricate Papercraft Microbes

microbe_10-620x929

Yes, that image above is PAPER. Artist Rogan Brown specializes in paper sculptures that explore (in his words) “patterns and motifs in the natural world.” And you must check out his portfolio, because the pieces are incredibly intricate, detailed, and breathtakingly beautiful.  You can see up-close, detailed photos of the above piece on Makezine.com (where I found the image above), but definitely check out his portfolio to get a sense of the breadth of this artist’s work too.  I can hardly believe it’s paper.  What do you think about the unusual medium and subject matter? Let us know in the comments!

Groot Cake!

Groot cake

I almost can’t believe that this incredible sculpture of Groot is a cake!! Isn’t it amazing? It was made by the hugely talented Tattooed Bakers who have made dozens (if not hundreds) of other equally mind-blowing cakes.

The Vanilla Studio – Dinosaur Menorahs

It’s time for Hanukkah! And what says Hanukkah more than a metallic painted toy dinosaur?

Lisa Pierce of The Vanilla Studio makes hand crafted menorahs from plastic prehistoric animal toys.

In silver or gold tone, these menorahs are fancy, shiny, and downright fun. Lisa also offers candle holders for your year-round lighting needs. And, according to Lisa’s Etsy profile, it sounds like more exciting projects are underway.

We created The Vanilla Studio years ago as an empty container to hold our creative dreams and endeavors. It’s currently a home for a menagerie of hand-crafted animal menorahs. Stay tuned to see what else we put in the box!

Bust of Christopher Reeve

I don’t remember how I came across this gallery, but the work done by Bobby Causey is just amazing. This bust of Christopher Reeve as Superman (minus the suit, just yet) took my breath away. But then again, I think Christopher Reeve was my first celebrity crush as a little geek girl.

The detail in the skin complexion (how his skin isn’t all one even color is just amazing to me. His eyes look like he could just blink at any minute. Bobby posted this is a prototype for a 1/3 and 1/1 statue.

Be sure to check out Bobby’s website for more statues and busts. His Heath Ledger “Joker” is truly eerie!

Carved Crayons as Art

download

Artist Hoang Tran of Sunnyvale, CA carves intricate sculptures of characters from popular fiction like Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, and others, from large size Crayola crayons, which are slightly larger than the standard size. No paints are used on the crayons. Extra colors are melted from other crayons, applied and then carved.

These detailed crayon carvings are available in his Etsy shop, Wax Nostalgic, where he also offers custom orders. Also be sure to check out his Tumblr blog for more images of his work.

Grumpy Cat Strikes Again

Tardar Sauce, aka Grumpy Cat, aka everyone’s favorite internet meme, is back and inspiring more artists this time.

“…The Grumpy Cat Art Project, a multimedia exhibition and auction event in honor of the Internet celebrity cat put together by more than 30 artists-in-residence at the Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment center in Huntsville, Alabama. According to one of the event organizers Dustin Timbrook, the exhibition aims to show the world that “art can elevate even the sillest subject,” taking advantage of the cat’s internet appeal to showcase the talent of resident artists at Lowe Mill. All of their artworks, which range from sculptures and paintings to stained glass art and soap carvings, are scheduled to be auctioned off online between May 27th and May 31st, culminating in a one-night exhibition at the art center on May 31st.”

“Ceramic potter and sculptor Calvin Hubbard’s Grumpy Cat is incredibly expressive and lovable. Don’t you just want to hug him?” This artist and art combo picture really cracked me up this morning. I love how Calvin’s got the Grumpy Cat look on his face.
