GeekCraft roundup: GIR!

My daughter is very into “Gir” these days – the sidekick from the Invader Zim cartoon. She’s hoping to pull together a Gir costume for Halloween. So in researching various DIY options, I pulled together this roundup of Gir crafts.

BehindtheSofa created her own Gir cross-stitch pattern, and stitched it onto a black hoodie.

When I was a kid, I used to love Shrinky Dinks, so these Dog Gir/Robot Gir earrings by Lynn Aquaheart caught my eye.

An Early Christmas Gift: Star Trek Ornaments

Star Trek Christmas tree ornament Fresh on the heels of the announcement that J.J. Abrams has officially signed on to direct ‘Star Trek 2’, I bring you another gift – Star Trek ornaments, a la Katie at Punk Projects.

Star Trek Nativity scene Delightful in their simplicity, these Star Trek ornaments go together easy-peasy-quick. Which means you can put a significant dent in that stash of bottlecaps and Scrabble letter tiles that *some* scrapbookers might have laying about (not pointing any fingers, and certainly not at myself!)

Might I add how much I love that Katie has a whole Christmas tree dedicated to Star Trek, AND a peg people Nativity scene??

Tutorial Tuesday: R2D2 Lamp

Instructables contributor Nylanan put together this amazing tutorial on how to transform an old silver lamp into an  homage to our favourite comedy sidekick droid, R2D2.

lets have 3 random facts about R2D2:

  1. The actor that played him (Kenny Baker) actually REALLY didn’t get on with the actor that played C3po (Anthony Daniels). In-fact to this day they’ve got a really rocky relationship…
  2. Kenny Baker actually had rude pictures of ladies stuck to the inside of the helmet of his costume (!!!) to keep him amused during the long hours of filming!! SHOCKING!!
  3. A couple of months ago I went to a convention called “Collectormania” in Milton Keynes and saw Kenny Baker chasing* a guy dressed in Storm Trooper armour trying to hit him with his walking stick! The storm trooper turned around and said “That’s not very nice” and Kenny Baker’s handler replied “well , you did try to kill him!” – priceless!!

*well he uses a wheelchair now, so he was being pushed by a handler, which made the whole scene even more surreal!

MakerFaire Kansas City

In 2006, Make magazine sponsored the first MakerFaire events in San Mateo, California, and since then has sponsored them all over the U.S.  MakerFaire is a weekend exhibition of all sorts of things that people make. Basically, if you can make it, it deserves a place at this event.

Maker Faire is the premier event for grassroots American innovation. As the World’s Largest DIY Festival, this two-day family friendly Faire has something for everyone – a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness and a celebration of the Maker mindset.

I recently attended MakerFaire KC and thought I would share some pictures from the event.

There were a number of 3D printer exhibitors, and they were pretty mind-blowing. To be honest, I had a little trouble wrapping my brain around the theory/process (how does one *print* something in 3D??), but it was sure interesting to watch. Knowing their audience, they printed a number of Portal cubes.

The Daleks were also there!

A  number of exhibitors featured projects of recycled art.

I loved these 2 signs at the Learn to Solder table.

I noticed a very geeky name for some hand-dyed yarn – “Evil League of Evil“.

And finally, this picture doesn’t do justice to this demonstration of this Tesla coil “concert” by ArcAttack.

So I found you a YouTube video of the same guys from a different MakerFaire, playing – what else – the Dr. Who theme song! Enjoy!

And you? Have you been to a local MakerFaire? What did you see and what was cool?
