No Lie, This Cake is a Nightmare

Perfect for Halloween this week, perhaps you’d like to whip up a Nightmare Before Christmas cake to enjoy. All it takes is some super-major cake ninja painting skills – surely you have those up your sleeve just, right?

I like how she includes all the different steps for creating and painting the fondant – I always wondered how the bakeries did that! I had no idea cake painting pens were a thing!

(P.S. Did you see what I did with the title of this post? “The Cake is a Lie” refers to what video game?)

Famine Pony Cake…Ok, let me explain

Some time ago, my fantastic husband surprised me with a shirt from Shirt Woot that featured The Four Little Ponies of the apocalypse. Some girls like jewelry, some girls are into chocolate, I love me some creepy-end-times mixed in with beloved childhood toys. In case you haven’t seen the shirt, here is the image:

I try to be careful where I wear it. Once I was waiting for a table at a popular Sunday brunch spot  and a little girl was excitedly pointing to my shirt. Her grandmother was like, “Oh look! You like those don’t yyyy…” and then she must have spied the famine pony because she shielded the little girls eyes and walked away from me.

Sorry grandma and little girl! I didn’t mean to horrify ya’ll.

Anyway, I didn’t realize that there was a Robot Chicken (I know, I don’t have cable…) tie-in with The Four Ponies of the Apocalypse until I stumbled upon this wonderfully geeky blog called Geek Sweets (lives up to its promise, check it out, so cute) and I found a Famine Pony cake! So yay, you guys!  I mean, boo to actual famine, but… Yay Jenny at Geek Sweets and yay internet for bringing the weird stuff together.

If anyone knows more about the origin of these ponies, feel free to leave it in the comments. Like I said, I knew very little outside of finding the t-shirt to be hilarious and a sweet gift.

Superman Saves the Wedding (cake)

Superman saves Lois from a falling wedding cake

Leave it to Pinterest to offer up a link to some luscious geekery – a unique take on a Superman wedding cake.

Not content to just offer a groom’s cake with a giant “S” emblazoned upon it, this geeky couple asked their baker to create a cake that looked like it was falling apart, with Superman swooping in to save Lois from the falling tier. Apparently the broken cake tier looked so real the DJ at the wedding had to keep announcing the cake was *supposed* to look like that. Well played, cake decorator!

Cake & Aging: Resistance is Futile

Star Trek Borg Cube Cake

I’ve had Trek on the brain lately, so I went searching for images of “Borg Cube” (of course!). And when I did, this little lovely showed up – a Borg Cube Cake.

I wonder…when you slice it, does it ‘bleed’ motor oil? Or does it automatically deflect the knife with shields?

I love that this project looks do-able – I’m betting I could figure out how to piece together a square cake (4 8×8 layers, perhaps?), and draw a bunch of icing lines. Sure, and that’s the kind of thinking that will end me up on CraftFail. So I’ll just settle for sharing the picture of the successful project here, and make no promises for real life attempts on my part.

The Cake is Not a Lie

The Cake is Not a LieIt’s a hat!  Yes, Nimcraft has created a free pattern for a knitted Portal Cake Hat that is absolutely adorkable.  This hat, a recreation of the chocolate cake in Portal 1 and 2, is also a quite delectable head warmer during cold months.  Knitted in worsted weight yarn, Nimcraft gives suggestions for making it in other weight yarns as well.  Not familiar or a fan of the game portal?  That’s okay, I don’t think there’s too many people that don’t like chocolate cake anyway!

Little Big Planet Cake

My amazing husband’s birthday is coming up this week (Happy Birthday, mishu!) and you know what he is not going to get: a fabulous birthday cake featuring his favorite video game, because I am not as talented or patient as Metria. Metria, I hope Shawn appreciated the heck out of this cake, girl!

You can find more pictures of the cake as well as a how-to following the links below. The quick specs are: butter cream, fondant, and wooden dowels. I know! Wooden dowels! That is where I bow out and accept defeat. Check it out, his itty bitty zipper  made me all >>>squee<<<<
