Cosplay Fun at Planet Comicon 2015!

IBOT

I spent the past weekend at Planet Comicon in Kansas City, and even though I spent the weekend working my booth (The Costume Wrangler’s Closet), I did get to see some pretty awesome cosplay.  Above are some of the amazing folks from the Iron Brothers of Topeka (IBOTS).

RainbowDalek

This little Rainbow Dalek exterminates with cuteness according to her mom!

Sharknado

I had to run this boy down to get his picture for a friend who’s obsessed with Sharknado.  I particularly love the faux gore on all the sharks.  How creative is this kid?!

Groot

I snuck a snapshot of this cosplayed in a seriously cool Groot costume.

R2-Q5

Technically this isn’t cosplay, but the Kansas City R2 Builders Club have got some pretty amazing R2s, like this R2-Q5, an evil R2 whose allegiance belonged to the Empire!

She-Ra

This chainmaille She-Ra was a volunteer from Amanda Lynn Chainmaille Creations.

A Batgirl Cosplay Bright Enough to Blind You

batgirl cosplay

Wow…that’s the only way I can think to begin this entry…HOW MUCH WORK was it to attach all of these sequins??? It’s like looking at Bat-Lady GaGa!

For a few Batgirl readers, the stylish leather jacket and snapped cape she wears now just seems so much less practical and realistic than the heavily seamed skintight spandex, leading them to express genuine concern about Batgirl’s effectiveness as a crime fighter. Fortunately for those compassionate souls, Cameron Stewart has made a concession in the form of a variant cover of Batgirl’s costume that is more practical. Which is to say, it is covered in golden sequins and rhinestones.

This cosplay is modeled by Stella Chuu, a cosplayer and burlesque performer, and made by Dangrrr Doll of New York, NY, based on the cover of Batgirl #37 by Cameron Stewart.

This could make for a hysterical panel in a comic book: Batgirl goes to fight Catwoman, but Catwoman is distracted by all the shining little lights bouncing off of Batgirl’s suit…it would be like watching a cat chase a laser.

A Crocheted Cosplay

barda

I love a good crochet project as much as the next geek, and gaylefrancis just took it up a notch, with her crocheted Big Barda costume.

Gaylefrancis said with the exception of the hexagons, she didn’t use any patterns. The legs, torso, and gauntlets are crocodile stitch. The cape is triple crochet. The rest of it is half-double. The megarod is single crochet with bubble stitch on the top and the buttons were stitched on separately.

For those of you not in the know, Big Barda is a fictional comic book superheroine appearing in books published by DC Comics. She first appeared in Mister Miracle #4 (October 1971), and was created by Jack Kirby.

Nice Knockers! Labyrinth cosplay

Talking Knockers Labyrinth cosplay by Brittney Benjamin

You gotta hand it to a girl with a nice pair of knockers. Indeed, Brittney Benjamin crafted hers herself, based on the talking door knockers in the movie Labyrinth. Working with two pounds of Sculpey and an old bra, she created some rather eye-catching cosplay. (Though it’s rude to stare.)

I remember watching Labyrinth in my youth, and vaguely remember being pretty scared by it. I should probably watch it again to see why. Probably just the sight of David Bowie in those pants.

Female cosplay worthy of the name of Thor

Female Thor cosplay by Anna Lee Mueller

With Marvel’s recent announcement that the Thor comics will soon have a female lead, I thought it might be fun to see if there was any female Thor cosplay out there. The internets did not disappoint.

Not only did Anna Lee of Glitzy Geek Girl put together a great Thor cosplay costume, she also provided a tutorial for creating the winged Thor helmet and beveled armor plating out of craft foam! I would not have thought of using gesso for a primer before spray painting – great tip!

What do you think of Marvel’s choice to make Thor female? What do you think of females cosplaying as male characters? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Peter Griffin Cosplayer Kills It

At the 2014 Allentown Comic Con there was a cosplay contest judged by celebrity cosplayers Riki Lecotey a.k.a. “Riddle” and Nicole Marie Jean. To keep the crowd entertained while they deliberated, they asked Robert Franzese, the perfect Peter Griffin cosplayer, to take the mic and he completely KILLED it!

Check out “Peter’s” stand-up comedy routine video.

By all means, this is not an elaborate cosplay, but it works because it’s so simple: glasses, white shirt, green pants, and a belt buckle. However, this guy has nailed it with the voice, the laugh and the banter he does. I mean, he actually makes Peter into a cute character! I’d love to see him team up with a Lois Griffin impersonator!
