Make Your House Extra Spooky With This Tutorial

Decorating for Halloween doesn’t have to break the bank! Try this cool, cheap, and simple tutorial from the Crafty Lumberjacks and make your house or apartment extra spooky with yarn spiderwebs. I think with some tweaking you could even do this on your porch (maybe try some black tie line and tacks or nails?). In any case, the tutorial has plenty of pictures and good descriptions to get you started. It may take some trial and error, but as the Crafty Lumberjacks suggest, “Be the spider.”

Progress on a Homemade Statue

ValkyrieII recently posted a statue he/she updated (sorry, based on the information and comments available, I don’t know if ValkyrieII is male or female). Anyway, on the left is the original version of the statue, either made for a college class or Halloween (doesn’t it look like an awesome headstone piece for a cemetery?). The right side shows the updates ValkyrieII has made to it.

The other pictures that accompany the post really show some nice detail work. Tt’s originally made out of chicken wire, paper maché, hardened fabric, and Styrofoam pieces. It has a Styrofoam head from Michael’s before, but the facial features weren’t great so this year, ValkyrieII bought some clay and built up some parts to make the face look a little more human.

The base is a microwave box with some 99¢ store decorations and paint on it. ValkyrieII said s/he tried to make it as weather proof as possible, but with the weight of the statue and the morning dew, the top has started to sag. Eventually, angel wings will be added to the statue’s body.

These Are Definitely The Pumpkins You’re Looking For

Halloween is coming and to get you ready I found some fun pumpkin carving templates and ideas! StarWars.com has got some free templates featuring some of your favorite characters, like Yoda and R2-D2. There’s a Chewbacca one that I think looks a bit impossible, but my pumpkins tend to look like a second grader carved them, so . . .

There are so many fun pumpkin carving (and decorating) ideas out there. Do you have some favorites?

Nightmare Before Christmas Cake Balls

Geek-a-Bites author Nikki is a freelance illustrator from Austin, Texas. She gladly combines her love for pastry and pop culture. On her blog, you can find photographs of mouthwatering cookies, cake balls and fondant figures inspired by games, series and childhood classics.

Although I’d love to show every scrumptious craft she has created, I’m just going to feature the most recent one, a collection of Nightmare Before Christmas cake balls that Nikki submitted herself. Cake balls are a sort of oversized pop cakes without sticks, coated with chocolate, fondant or icing and often decorated. Yes, I never keep up with the baking trends either!

The balls look awfully detailed. They’d be perfect for a Halloween party or a birthday in my darker, teenage years. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but the tiny hills with the pumpkin patch and crescent moon are surely adorable!

Cinderella’s Steampumpkin Coach

In theory, the appeal of this pumpkin is that it’s a cool, no-carve idea for Halloween. But the real appeal is that it’s freaking rad! There are no specific instructions (beyond “use these bits of junk”), but you could take it in so many different directions…. You could go more steampunk or more traditionally fairytale elegant. You could add LEDs! (I’m always a fan of adding LEDs.) You could glitter that bad boy, or add rhinestones, or attach reins and horses. So many possibilities. Since I moved earlier this year, I don’t think I have the necessary bits and bobs to create such a fabulous pumpkin coach, but it would otherwise totally be my pumpkin of choice for this Halloween.
