‘Tis the season of ghosts and ghouls and creepy jack-o-lanterns – Halloween is just over a month away! What could be creepier than a Minecraft Creeper jack-o-lantern? Brenda Ponnay has you covered with an easy tutorial for making your own creepy Creeper pumpkins (or other vegetable).

I thought it was interesting that she was inspired by the green produce from her local farmers’ market, and that she used other vegetables in addition to pumpkins. Who would have thought of a Halloween green pepper?? Clever!

Sadly, my kids are past the days of decorating pumpkins, though I remember some fun Pokemon pumpkins from back in the day. What will you be carving your pumpkin into this year?

Spooky Halloween Crafts

Designer Blair Stocker (who you might know from her fun and colorful blog, Wise Craft) has just posted a fantastic series of free craft project tutorials for Value Village — yes, that Value Village. Her projects take regular old thrift-store finds and upcycle them into striking, spooky Halloween decorations for your house, or for throwing a party!

Blair says: I wanted to use items that could be found any time of year at Value Village or other thrift store, not just during the Halloween season, so I resisted buying Halloween things, that just seemed too easy. The other thing I really wanted to do was to create projects that were “low sew” or even “no sew”, the idea being that anybody should be able to jump in and do these projects with materials they find for very little money.

The most effortlessly geeky project of the whole collection has to be these Dolls of the Living Dead. I’ve seen so many neglected Barbies at thrift stores and yard sales and this is a brilliant — and super-easy — zombie makeover to the rescue!

Blair mentioned that her personal favorite was the Sinister Ceramics — tchotkes painted black with sparkly rhinestone eyes glowing red. I love the grouping as a table centerpiece, very Edgar Allen Poe!

There are a dozen more projects to download from the site, from Peculiar Picture Frames (goth-inspired silhouettes) to Perfect Pumpkin Ornaments (which have a charming Nightmare Before Christmas feel to me). And of course you could put a very geeky spin on any of Blair’s ideas!

Make Your Very Own Bat Mobile

Unfortunately, it’s not four-wheeled Batmobile we’d all love to take a spin in, but rather a Halloween decoration from Martha Stewart.

Peek into your backyard and your art-supply drawer — odds are you have everything you need to make this bat mobile.

Trace her free bat templates onto black card stock; cut them out and fold them according to template instructions. Make a small hole in the center of each bat with a tack. Poke a piece of thread through each hole, and knot it. Tie the bats to a found branch (painting it black is optional). Then hang the branch from two pieces of thread secured to the top of the window with flat thumbtacks.

One pointer I’d like to add: start keeping your eyes open for the right branch weeks before you start your Halloween decorating. When you find the one(s) you like, bring them into a garage or some other climate controlled area, and let them dry out completely. It’s also a good time to check the branches over for bugs. And if you decide to paint your branch, here’s a great tutorial on the best way to do it.

I thought this was freaking awesome last year, but a Giant Tentacle Monster absolutely tops the Epic Halloween Decorations charts.  In this Instructable by username flaming_pele, you’ll see step by step how to make your own Giant Tentacle Monster.  There’s a supply list and several pictures, though you will need some of your own ingenuity and creativity to make it work for your own yard.  However, the core idea is solid, and the result is TERROR-fic! (I couldn’t help myself.) What are your DIY Halloween decorating plans this year?

Everyone Needs Minions

My husband and I saw “Despicable Me 2” last weekend (it was his idea…he hasn’t watched an animated movie or a cartoon with me since “Toy Story” came out!), and as before, those little minions are just wildly funny. And according to the great vast internet, they remain pretty popular.
Brain from Kansas posted a tutorial on how he turned his son into a minion for Halloween, with the bulk of the costume coming from a garbage can. “As soon as my son saw Dispicable Me, my son immediately knew he wanted to be a minion. I had made his costumes for the past several years…, so I started working on this new challenge. He can be pretty shy, but once he was in this costume, his personality lit up.” Brian has some really great photos in his tute, which would be easy to recreate, or turn into a static display for a porch for a Halloween decoration.

Up next, an unknown family goes total “Despicable Me” cosplay! I really wish there was some way to ID them here. This is an awesome group costume!

BTW, if you go see “Despicable Me 2,” stay through the credits. There’s some funny minion stuff during the credits, but nothing afterwards.
