Paper Dolls by Breeyn McCarney and Christopher Lewis

I really love when something simple becomes something outrageous and astonishing–like Paper Dolls, the project by best friend pair Breeyn McCarney and Christopher Lewis. Breeyn took paper crafting to a wholly different building (forget a new level!) making these gorgeous, hand cut paper dresses. Then, because that wasn’t awesome enough, Chris rigged these babies up with LED lighting, and remote controls!

Now, all of that is pretty amazing, but stand by for the REALLY cool part. Tomorrow at 9pm EST, Bree and Chris will be on the web show Nat and Marie, showcasing these amazing dresses, and you (yes, YOU) can interact with the dresses from your browser or smart phone! High fashion, high tech, social networking…is there anything they can’t do?

Atari Freezer Paper Shirt

I have recently declared myself the Atari clothing and accessory expert on Geek Crafts, after having my essay on the above published in World Of Geekcraft by our own Susan Beal. That being true, I had to feature this Atari Freezer Paper Shirt made by Lucinda879 on Craftster. This was her first try, and it came out perfect, in my expert opinion.

Handmade Geekcrafts Contest this week!

My hometown weekly, the Portland Mercury, is sponsoring a new handmade geekcraft project contest (with a nice shoutout to geekcrafts.com, thank you very much!) over at their site this week – email in a photo of your favorite handmade project extraordinaire, and you could win a copy of World of Geekcraft, a POW! ZAP! Magnets kit, and lots of glory. The deadline is Friday, May 6, and all the details are in the post.

Paper-Cut Hellraiser Puzzle Box

Clive Barker’s cult film series Hellraiser gave the horror genre two iconic images: ol’ Pinhead himself (the patron monster of all sewers, perhaps?), and the Lament Configuration puzzle box.

Michigan-based paper crafter Marcey Mercado beautifully captured the intricate designs of the infamous box by cutting gold vellum. It seriously looks like you could reach out and grab it!

This piece is one-of-a-kind, and Marcey has no plans to make another. I can’t say I blame her. Cutting out all those tiny details must have been as torturous as…well, as opening up a puzzle box!

Paper Goldeneye Remote Mines

I found this sweet website called Cut Score Fold and Glue that posts instructions about how to make your own paper sculptures. There are many many geeky posts for you to check out, but after searching specifically for Goldeneye 64 crafts, I found (among numerous other creations) the instructions on how to cut/score/fold/glue remote mines!

I’m guessing they wouldn’t give quite the same satisfaction of throwing them in the game when they’re made out of paper, but maybe you could put one of those stick-on bathroom air fresheners inside to give it some weight/stickability. (That’s what the remote mines always reminded me of.)

Newspaper Box Robot

I was in downtown Hillsboro, Oregon last week and saw this mini-spectacle on Main St., right in front of a sandwich shop. Someone used dryer vents, cardboard, tin foil, duct tape, and a little crafty ingenuity to robotify this plain old Hillsboro Argus newspaper box! I was totally charmed, and my two-year-old LOVED it.
