Glass Jar Terrarium

Glass Jar TerrariumWinter blues are starting to set in, and the snow just keeps on coming!!  My solution for seasonal depression is to craft and just pretend it’s already spring.  I need some green in my life, so since I’ve been obsessed with terrariums for awhile, and have an overload of mason jars from the holidays and canning…. I present to you, Jenny Ryan’s tutorial to make your own tiny terrarium in a jar!

If you make one of these, please let me know.  I’ll be posting mine as soon as I finish collecting supplies!  And better yet, have more ideas for my overflow of various sized mason jars?  Send me ideas for those too :)

Stargate Fair Isle Beanie

I want this hat. I NEED this hat. But I can’t knit, and I don’t know anyone who can do fair isle. I have tried to learn to knit, just so I can make this hat (I’m hopeless). Carol Schoenfelder posted this Stargate beanie over at Ravelry, and I truly think it’s the greatest hat ever.  She used the gate symbols as well as traditional fair isle patterns, making this subtly geeky and incredible cool.

There’s a free tutorial on her Ravelry page, which means someone can make this for me, right? Pretty please?

Futurama Cake Roundup

Futurama is one of my all time favorite shows. I even have a Mars University t-shirt. And yet I’m ashamed to say that I have never had a Futurama cake. After seeing these, I may have to change that when my birthday rolls around.

Brainslug Cupcakes

These were such a hit last year that they were reproduced for the cast and crew for the final script reading of Season 6. The brainslugs are gum paste, and the brains are grenadine flavored buttercream frosting.

Planet Express Wedding cake

I want this at my wedding! I love how detailed it is. I wouldn’t want to cut into it! It looks like the Planet Express logo is actually fondant, not painted on.

New New York Wedding Cake

I love the New New York skyline on this one (from Edible Art Bakery). The back ground is painted on and the closer buildings are fondant. And the jetpack-wearing cat and dog from the pilot are on there!

Futurama Cupcake Toppers

These are gorgeous, and could go with any cupcake. The disks are fondant and edible marker (I have to get some!).  Plus, there’s a tutorial!

Bender’s Head Cake

I love that this birthday cake is actually Bender’s head, not just a picture of it. And it’s chocolate!

Mars University Wedding Cake

The bride and groom both love Futurama, so of course that’s what’s on their wedding cake. It even has Buggalo running around the bottom. No sign of the Wongs though.

Character Cupcakes

These are really cute. The Nibbler one is my favorite (I love his eyestock). From Unicorn Magic Baking Company.

I think I might have to bake something tonight. Hmm…

Have a great weekend!

Epic Mario Quilt!!

There is no other no other word for this mario quilt than EPIC!… and as someone who works with teenage children I use that word sparingly!

cheerupem0kidx0x started the Mario theme room thread on craftster back in July 2010! and since then has been keeping us updated, as she created the bob-omb lamp, pipe waste paper bin, NES cartridge clock, papier mache fire flower, papier mache boo… just seriously… there’s no way I can list everything this amazing geek crafter has made just go look at the thread.

Since there was lots of work in progress included on this thread, it’s a treasure trove of how-to’s, tutorials and fabulous crafting ideas (you will NOT BELIEVE how easy it is to make .a bob-omb lamp!)

I think we can all agree, her son is a very lucky guy!

The stuff she made is great, but the quilt is just AMAZING (and I’m not one for quilting…. at all… if I’m going to sit at a sewing machine for hours there’d better be a dress at the end of it!) It’s a result of 5 months work and it’s paid off big style!

Robots in 2011

Hi all! My name is Jamie, and I’m excited to be joining the Geek Craft crew in the new year.

For my inaugural post, I thought I’d share some pics of a new planner I made for myself a few weeks ago.

My craft weapon of choice is often paper, whether that’s through  journaling, stationery, or zines, so I sometimes I can be a little picky when it’s time to commit to a planner for a whole year. This year (or I should really say last year), I wasn’t finding anything I loved, so I decided to make my own.

I drew the days of the week and surrounded them with some cut-and-paste action from a crappy old kids’ joke book I found. I like the old-skool zine feel of it.

For the cover, I splurged on some fancy-pants robot fabric at my local shop. I’m really pleased with/surprised at how straight I was able to keep everything!

I learned how to do this online a few years ago, and unfortunately I can’t find the exact same website, but mothteeth.com has a similar tutorial. It’s not too difficult, it just takes a lil patience, and acceptance of the inevitable imperfections.

Girl Geek Craft Crush, Lanikins

If you’ve been on craftster, then you’ve probably seen Lani Spear around.

Her recent She-ra  poppet , which she designed for a private swap with Padfoot, is an excellent illustration of how she embodies the soul of Geek Craftiness.

A little search through her previous projects shows the extent of her geeky inspiration, she also created the uncanny Coraline, Coraline is so film-realistic she could be on a shelf in a store and wouldn’t look out of place.

I have my fingers and toes crossed that next time I’m in a crafster swap, I wind up with Lani as my partner, she’s an awesome geek crafter!

Check out her projects on Craftster for goodies like; her gorgeous son dressed as Shaun from Shaun of the Dead, Gir amigurumi (with tutorial), super cute Rocky Horror Eddie poppet, and an ADORABLE Sweeny Todd Poppet.

Go, look, enjoy, Kudos Lanikins.
