ExtermiCHECKMATE

Yeesh…cheesy title for the post this week, right? Sorry about that. I’ve had a looong weekend at the Small Press Expo in suburban Washington DC. But on the other end of that cheesy title folks is a double whammy: a chess set (gasp!) with a Doctor Who theme (wheee!)  I found this via the deviantart page of Eladin Skywalker, a sculptor who made all 32 pieces from scratch out of polymer clay. The piece breakdown is as follows:

Evil side:
King: The Master
Queen: Lady Cassandra
Bishops: Cybermen
Knights: Judoon & Sontaran
Rooks: Weeping Angels
Pawns: Daleks

Good side:
King: The Doctor (Ten)
Queen: Professor River Song
Bishops: Ood
Knights: Captain Jack Harkness & The Face of Boe
Rooks: Tardises
Pawns: Baby Adipose

GERMINATE! GERMINATE! GERMINATE!

Even those Geeks among us who have a green thumb want to have the coolest gardens possible! Jackielantern shared her latest geek inspired garden gadget over on Craftster.

A Dalek planter!

Jackielantern also gives a brief description of her thought process in creating the planter.

I now must have a matched set…or two..maybe three…

They Must Exterminate…

They Must Exterminate... … or at least keep the boiled eggs warm! These hand crafted Dalek Egg Cozies are just right for the job. Created by Lyles Knit, free patterns are available for either a knitted circular. Don’t feel left out, crocheters because there is a crocheted pattern available that was designed by Alienfish. For those who prefer knitting flat, Lyles Knit also provides a pattern for that version as well by Anne.

They Must Exterminate crochet Whichever version you choose to make, I doubt anyone will mess with your eggs when a Dalek is watching over it!

Not much of an egg eater?  Just crochet or knit a small circular piece for the bottom, stuff and you have an amigurumi version of a dalek!

Creative Cross-Stitch, Nerdy Needlework

While I haven’t really done any cross-stitching since about the age of eight, I can appreciate it as an arts-and-craft-form. Done properly and on an interesting subject, and it can be pretty damn impressive. (My mother once re-created this iconic La Dame aux Camelias Mucha poster with spectacular results. Just wish I had a photo to show you!) Anyway, tangent aside, I have found some awesome cross-stitch patterns on The Crafty Companion’s Etsy shop. She creates and sells patterns on an array of geek themes from Doctor Who to Game of Thrones, Firefly to Harry Potter. Very cute, not to mention reasonably priced. ($3 per pattern seems like a good deal to me!)

Tutorial Tuesday: TARDIS Christmas Ornament

There’s nothing more christmassy than the TARDIS (or at least, not in my house, where the Daleks wear Santa hats and the Dr Who Christmas special is the cornerstone of the day).

And with not much more than some felt and a hot glue gun you can make your own TARDIS for your tree… not included in Carrie526‘s tutorial, however, is how to make it bigger on the inside… :-)
