Insta-cookie

instagram cookie

I’m such a sucker for iPhone App crafts. There is just something so sweet and loving about replicating those little icons that are the backdrop of my hectic everyday. I have to admire the fact that someone paused to take the time to recompose the colors, the shapes, and remind me of the art behind some of these icons.

I hate to do this, but I don’t know the reference for this cookie! I happened upon it from Pinterest, which lead me to a really funny tumblr called Epic Ponyz, who in turn got it from We Heart it, thought I don’t know if that was another re-blog or the original artist.

Anyway, if anyone knows the origin of the instagram cookie, leave it in the comments and I will update the post. Otherwise, I’ve just given you an additional tumblr or two that will suck your time away. You’re welcome!

May the bars be in your favor!

Check out this cell phone decorated with adorable chibi Katniss, Gale and Peeta! Everyone seems to be a bit obsessed with bars lately. Can you use your cell phone here…or here…no, maybe just outside of this door and to the left. We go through some weird antics just to be able to send a quick text, tweet or make that important phone call. At least while we wander around like a person possessed trying to find that elusive bar, we can look good.

Can you hear me now? Do I care? My cell phone looks AWESOME!

A Town Called Eureka

Monday marks the first episode of the final season of a little show called Eureka. As some may or may not know, I watch an TON of SyFy. Eureka is one of my favorite shows on the channel. The fact that it’s ending has my heart breaking.

In an effort to find something to quell the ache in my heart, I turned to Etsy. I was a little saddened to see such little content on this beautiful show. That was until I came across agirlfrommars‘s shop. In my hour of need, I saw this beautiful and simple homage to my beloved show and couldn’t help but squee.

The Global Dynamic phone charm is perfect for those of us who like simple ways to show their geekiness (which from my posts, is pretty obvious I’m one of those people).  The small charm with the logo of the company where everything can go right (but usually goes wrong), keeps those of us devastated by the cancellation of this show satisfied in pretending that we were there.

Artifact Roadshow

I’ve mentioned it before, and I’ll say it again, I love the SyFy series Warehouse 13. That show has a little something for every sci-fi fan. For such an amazing show, the crafts that stem from it are few and far between. I’ve searched high and low for crafts that are inspired by this amazing show, and generally come up empty. Even finding t-shirts has been a struggle.

That is, until I ran across Comickergirl on Redbubble. In addition to having a t-shirt that is compiled of quotes from my favorite character (Claudia Donovan), she’s created other shirts for this amazing series. From a shirt that advertises the goo Warehouse Agents have to use for catching artifacts, to an iPhone case that looks like the Farnsworths’ (I’ve never wanted to own an iPhone so much in my entire life). They’re all a soon to be staple in my geek wardrobe.

Physics Cupcakes

Physics CupcakesAccording to popular theories held by physics professors the world over, cupcakes are delicious.  That’s why I absolutely adore these cupcakes made by quaint_idea for her last ever high school physics class.  I’m pretty sure I skipped my last ever high school physics class to pump iron or something equally manly, but I am glad to see that some people have more class than that.

Take a closer look at the cupcakes here, they were posted on a livejournal group called geekcrafts because great minds think alike and all that.

You can also visit quaint_idea at her LJ page here.

Geeky cupcakes are nothing new to Geekcrafts, check out these Doctor Who Cupcakes or these iPhone Cupcakes or even these Pac-Man cupcakes.  Is anyone else getting hungry?

Giskin Anomaly Detector

Giskin Anomaly ContestIf you’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting San Diego’s Balboa Park, you’ll know what a beautiful place it is. With its Spanish-Renaissance architecture and landscaped gardens, you feel like you’ve truly stepped back into another time.

It seems like I’m not the only one who feels that way. The Balboa Park Online Collaborative (BPOC) recently launched an interactive cell phone game called Giskin Anomaly, to encourage visitors to fully explore the park’s historic treasures.

Guests can dial in to hear the adventures of two people who use a memory-sensing device (called the Giskin Anomaly Detector) to retrieve WWII-era recollections throughout the park.

As part of the game’s launch, BPOC hosted a contest inviting artists to create a Steampunk-inspired model of what this fanciful device would look like.

San Diego-area artist John Hosford walked away with the grand prize. His intricate model, dubbed “Sir Tellabeem’s Tempress Mark II” took him over 80 hours to construct, involving cutting and dying the leather of the glove by hand.

Though there was only one grand-prize winner, the competition was fierce indeed. Check out the Flickr pool showcasing the winners, and the afternoon their costumed creators spent playing with the contraptions in the park.

A moment of full disclosure: I used to take karate classes with John and his siblings, back in the day. I knew he was a creative kid, so it’s great to see how his talent has blossomed over the years. Congrats on the win, John, and keep up the awesome work!
