Crazy 4 Cult in Los Angeles, July 8-30

Crazy 4 Cult posterI know I mentioned it in my last post, but I thought folks might be interested in knowing a little more about Crazy 4 Cult, an annual art show exploring the intersection of fandom and fine art.

Held at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles, the show features pieces ranging from paintings to hand-sewn plushies. What all the art has in common, though, is a deep love for the movies that have made a mark on our cultural conscious, from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to The Shining.

This summer, the show celebrates its fifth year, as well as the publication of Crazy 4 Cult: Cult Movie Art. A 176-page book featuring some of the best art from the show’s previous years, it also boasts an introduction by filmmaker/pop culture connoisseur Kevin Smith.

Crazy 4 Cult 5 opens with a reception on Friday, July 8, 7-11pm, and runs through July 30. The galley also hosts a book signing for Crazy 4 Cult: Cult Movie Art on July 10 at 12pm, with many of the featured artists in attendance.

If anyone gets a chance to check out this awesome show, drop us a line and let us know what wowed you!

And with that, dear readers, I am officially off for summer vacation! My husband and I are traveling to Southeast Asia for the first time ever, and I’ll be gone for most of the month. So, everyone have a great July (and a happy 4th to all U.S. Geek Crafters), and I’ll see you soon!

Ursa Major and Ursa Minor Pillows

Ursa Major and Ursa Minor pillowsLove, California designer Christin Morgan may be getting some serious buzz about her customizable state cushions, but it was these beautiful Ursa Major and Ursa Minor pillows that caught my geeky eye.

Whether you want to cuddle them while you dream under the stars, or set the pair on a shelf to gaze upon, these are the perfect teddy bears for astronomy nuts of all ages.

I think what I love about them the most is that they make me think of my mama, who has her telescope set up in the same room as her teddy bear collection. Plush bears and stars have always gone hand-in-hand in my house!

Reader Submission: Dr Who Plush!

Geekcrafts reader Rebecca made this plushie Tenth Doctor for a friend who, like many of us, has more than a slight attraction to David Tennant’s Doctor. Rebecca writes:

“I made this Doctor Doll for my friend, who has a major crush on Ten [who doesn’t?!] Her husband tells me she sleeps with him [as in, the doll] in her clutches every night)  After posting the photos on facebook, some of her friends have since commissioned me to make them their own Tens, but nothing compares to the original)”

Its always nice to have your work appreciated Lauren, I love your little Ten. Especially his cheeky little smile and diddy sonic screwdriver! Do you want to see your work here? Let us know about it by using the submit a Geekcraft link.

Crochet Creature Connection

Roxy Craft Crochet CreaturesJust as geek crafts can be found in the strangest of place, so too can geeky crafters.

The last place you might think of looking for one would be in the U.S. Army. However, that is precisely where the creator of these two charming, crocheted fellows can be found.

Made from Roxycraft patterns (that seem to be out-of-print, sadly), these little guys were stitched up by my brother-in-law when he was stationed in the Middle East last year.

When you craft gifts for a friend or loved one, you can’t help but keep them in mind as you work on the project: will they like the color? Will it fit right? Will they get the in-joke I incorporated? Will it go straight to the Goodwill box?

So, I like to think that stitching these — as well as the other creatures he made for his family — helped give him a sort of quiet connection to the people he loved back home.  It makes these plushies all the more special to know that he was thinking of us when he was half a world away.

Not to mention, they’re friggin’ awesome! I still can’t get over the dragon’s wings. Or it’s little toes…

DeLorean Time Machine Plush Sculpture

DeLorean Time Machine PlushGreat Scott! Check out this DeLorean time machine plushie, built by the talented Lynne Dhenson.

What a great homage to the classic Back to the Future films. I love how Lynne took something so hard-angled and mechanical and made it into a soft, squeezable felt sculpture.

Seriously, do yourself a favor and click through to her LJ post to see the amazing amount of detail that went into this piece. She says that the engine alone took 16 separate pieces!

Though the DeLorean and its pattern do not seem to be for sale, Lynne does have a few other cool patterns available on her Etsy shop, including one for the Metallicar from Supernatural.

Retro Robot Plushie Pattern

Retro Robot PlushIt’s the 21st century, and I have to say, I’m pretty darn disappointed. I thought by now we’d have flying cars, and that every home would have their own personal robot servant. Until the times catch up with my unrealistic expectations, I’ll just have to go DIY.

Luckily, I won’t have to design my ‘bot from scratch, thanks to this adorable Retro Robot plushie pattern from Gulf Coast Cottage. He’s got everything I want in a robot: flexible arms, eco-friendly wind-up powers, and a fully huggable chassis.

For those of you who already have plush robot minions, you should check out the Gulf Coast Cottage Etsy shop, anyway. It’s full of the most adorable felt food and play set patterns (including a super-neat under the sea set) you’ve ever seen!
