Geek Crafts at Maker Faire!

If you are in the Bay Area (or can get there this weekend), don’t miss the magnificent Maker Faire! There is way too much going on to try to list here, but check out their list of makers and weekend schedule for tons of details. Here are a couple of things I’m most excited about…

Friend of geekcrafts Bonnie Burton is teaching a rad craft demo: make a paper-bag puppet of Admiral Akbar from her new Star Wars Craft Book. I went to her Yoda doll demo at Maker Faire a couple of years ago and it was amazing!

Meanwhile, Particle Zoo will have her excellent subatomic particle plushies for sale in the Bazaar Bizarre section. Her motto: It has to be scientifically accurate, and it has to be cute. (Thanks Rachel!)

Accuracy in Labeling – Supernovae

Space geek extraordinaire Rachel pointed me to these supernovae warning stickers that Matt Mechtley of biphenyl.org made — awesome!

Matt says,

One of the most amazing discoveries of modern astrophysics is that almost all of the chemical elements we see around us were produced in supernovae — energetic explosions that typically mark the death throes of massive stars. Elements heavier than oxygen are disseminated mostly through supernovae, and elements heavier than iron come almost only from supernovae. This means that literally everything around you is full of atoms that were originally created in massive stars that exploded and sent those elements flying into interstellar space, where they eventually coalesced into dust and became you and the Earth you’re standing on.

…I thought a sticker campaign would be the perfect cheeky way to engage in some informal education!

Space Invaders Quilt and Rock Band Comforter

I found some great bedding on Craftster recently.

Space Invaders Quilt

Maddys Mum made her husband this lap-sized Space Invaders quilt for Christmas. The simple yet detailed square per pixel worked out great!

Another Christmas gift, Lovefrozenstars made this rockin’ (oh my, did I really just say “rockin'”?) comforter for her boyfriend with the Rock Band guitar icon. She includes some tips in her post, including how she did the image,

“To get the symbol, I brought a print out of it to a Kinko’s and had them blow it up as large as they could.  I cut that image out and traced it onto white fleece that I sewed onto the front.”

Of course, both gifts were very well-received!

Be on the lookout for posts from new Geek Crafter Renee – she’ll be blogging regularly here at Geek Crafts.

We hope everyone has a happy, crafty, geeky new year!
