One (Well, Three) Patterns to Rule Them All

My very first geek love was Lord of the Rings. I loved J.R.R. Tolkien’s works and Peter Jackson’s films, and collected calendars, comics, maps, and books about Middle Earth. So it should be no surprise that I’ve found three Lord of the Rings patterns for you to celebrate Middle Earth  in your own way!

The first pattern is the noble Tree of Gondor, which can be seen on Faramir’s armor and the Gondorian flag. A beautiful white tree with seven stars and the crown of the King, it’s a pattern even non-Ringers can enjoy. Lusianne R. from Ravelry has created a handy pdf chart so that you too can declare your allegiance to the House of Gondor.

This next pattern is of the Doors of Durin, the secret doors that the Fellowship had to open before journeying into the Mines of Moria. While the actual doors were made of stone and ithildin, which could only be seen by moonlight or starlight, this knit pattern designed by Andrea Krüß-Anders on Ravelry, will probably be much more comfy and transportable.

The third pattern has already been featured here on GeekCrafts by Jenny, but is amazing enough to deserve a second appearance. What better way to show off your fandom than to wear the Elvish ring inscription as a scarf?  This pattern is designed by Diana Stafford, and is also on Ravelry. Just be sure you have the rhyme memorized, should anyone ask for a translation!

One ring to find them,
One ring to bring them all,
And in the darkness bind them!”

ProCRAFTinating: things to make at your desk

Another late night conference call, and another night where I’m trying to find something to do at my desk. Thankfully the internet has some great suggestions for things you can construct out of office supplies. Here’s a small round up of things I found this evening (links at the bottom). Happy procrastinating!

DIY Constellation Scarf

Here’s one for all my fellow Astrogeeks! I LOVE this scarf. Love it. As an amateur astronomer anything with constellations send me giddy, and this is great because you can make your own scarf featuring your favourite constellations.

DIY Constellations Scarf

Check out the tutorial on A Beautful Mess to discover how to make your own using a scarf, some craft foam, and a bit of easy embroidery.

I’ve actually been thinking of doing something similar to this on some blinds, ever since I purchased the wonderful Dot to Dot tee from Threadless, but I reckon using this tutorial a lot more things in my life are soon going to be sporting astronomical designs pretty soon!

Somebody’s View Quilt

Somebody's View Quilt

This awesome quilt wall hanging was made by funthreads on craftster. I think it’s fantastic! I love space, and the colours used in this are beautiful! She describes in some detail how she made it, but not being a quilter myself, I don’t really understand, so I can’t comment on how detailed her instructions are! I adore the purple Saturn (or is it just a ringed planet?) and the rocks, and the glittery beads as stars… even the name of it, Somebody’s View, is perfect. Just imagine an alien sitting on a far planet looking at the purple Saturn. I would love to hang this on my wall!

optimusprimeThis three dimensional Optimus Prime is impressive to say the least. Plastic canvas has never looked so extreme. Based on the original toy series, superstar Lord Libidan, I would say this is his pièce de résistance. What? Not uber enough for you? IT TRANSFORMS!

That’s right. Not only did he make a poseable transformer, Optimus Prime transforms into a truck!!! No seriously, look at this!optimusprime2

Just when you thought this couldn’t be any cooler! He also has plans for other Transformers including Starscream. Head on over to his Etsy shop and be prepared to have your head explode!
