T-Shirt DIYs for Back To School

PaintedR2D2TShirt

Back to school time doesn’t have to suck.  Make your own (or someone else’s) wardrobe super cool with these fantastic T-shirt ideas from Natalie over at Doodlecraft.  She uses freezer paper to make stencils and paint designs onto t-shirts.  You can download some of the designs she features on her blog, but it wouldn’t take much to come up with your own.  Once you have your design, you can make a stencil out of freezer paper (either with a cutting machine or with a little elbow grease and an exacto knife). The cool thing about freezer paper is that you can iron it onto fabric and it sticks into place, making it the perfect stencil.  Once your design is painted on and dry, you simply peel off the freezer paper and your custom t-shirt is ready to go.  The blog post takes you step-by-step through the process, complete with awesome pictures.

What designs would you want to make for your own back-to-school wardrobe?

Sharknado 4 Watch Party Food Idea

Sharknado4

It’s almost here: Sharknado 4! I’ve been slowly getting ready for this weekend, and I thought I’d share with you a little of what I’ve been up to, including this free printable I’ve designed for serving up some fun Sharknado themed snacks.

I’ll freely admit my design is more fun than functional.  And, I was heavily inspired by this AWESOME, free printable Shark Bait Snack Cups at MyPrintly.com.

I’m also going to try this popcorn recipe for the watch party I’m going to.  I thought Nerd Love Maggie’s Shark Bait Ocean Party Popcorn Mix looked pretty tasty, though I think I might substitute red candy melts instead of white.  What’s Sharknado party food without a little gore, right?

Have you got plans to “celebrate” the fourth installment in this epically ridiculous movie series? Share your Sharknado party ideas in the comments below!

Making a Batman Comic Cabinet

MLgTcir

I like this craft for it’s ease, it’s versatility and it’s “green-ness,” because it’s an upcycling project. Blondje601 wanted a nicer place to keep his comics, instead of just regular boxes, so he picked up an old metal filing cabinet from Goodwill for a few bucks.

He spray painted it black, and, using an overhead projector, he drew on two different Batman logos. When those were painted, he also painted the handles yellow. Boom, instant new custom storage.

The great thing about a project like this, is that you could do it it, for maybe even cheaper. By checking your local Craigslist “Free” section or Freecycle, you could score yourself the same kind of filing cabinet. Don’t like Batman (well, you might want to keep that to yourself so I don’t judge you), how about a red and blue cabinet for Spider-Man or Wonder Woman? Orange, black and white for the Rebels of Star Wars? You could even do lavender and pale yellow for a Fluttershy-themed cabinet.

If you don’t have access to a school’s old fashioned over-head projector, like Blondje601 did, then check with your friends. You could always use a USB micro projector plugged into your computer.

And remember, an awesome cabinet like this doesn’t have to be just for comics. Even important files and bills need a cool place to live. Really, the possibilities are limitless.

Civil War Themed Lego Mural – What More Is There To Say?

AllenTHickmanLegoMural

A few weeks ago I got to meet one of the artists behind the incredible Lego work I kept seeing at area conventions. His name is Allen T. Hickman. For Planet Comicon, he created this amazing Captain America: Civil War mural. That Captain America Shield? He created that too.  And people, he doesn’t use a computer program to do it. Want to see more of his awesome stuff (not just murals, but fully realized Lego models too!), then check out Allen’s Facebook Page and take a look at some of his incredible creations.  Be sure to hop on over to The Just Brick League Facebook Page too and check out more of his Lego masterpieces.  You can also find video of the Lego awesomeness that Allen and Ty Forshee brought to Planet Comicon 2015 on YouTube, posted by Gabe Counts.

Make Your Own MLP Inspired Pegasus Wings!

PonyWings

I’ve been up to my eyeballs getting ready for Planet Comicon in KC, and something I’m introducing this year is MLP (My Little Pony) Inspired Pegasus Wings. This great video tutorial by Anonymous Woodsprite Cosplay Accessories got me started (though I used this awesome video tutorial as more of a jumping off point to my own version). The video tutorial is fantastic and takes you step-by-step through making your own pair of pegasus pony wings, starting with what materials to use and how to make your own pattern.  There’s even a bonus section at the end on making a matching pair of pony ears.  So, get your MLP cosplay on and make some awesome MLP Inspired Pegasus Wings of your own!

Just grab some empty water bottles, foil, electrical tape, streamers, and a few other materials and you too can create these awesome jet packs. (You/your kids must supply your own wooshing noises, but I’m guessing those won’t be in short supply.)

Be sure to hop over to her post for the how-to, plus adorable pics of her little man in action.
