Amigurimi Coraline

“I have no plans to love you,” said Coraline. “No matter what. You can’t make me love you.”
— Neil Gaiman (Coraline)

Crochet Coraline doll - amigurumi patternThat may be what Coraline said to “the other mother”, but you won’t be able to say it to this adorable amigurimi by Ravelry poster, Sharon Rose, aka Homemade Obsessions.

I love her little yellow boots, her key necklace, and the drapey blue hair, and of course the button eyes are perfect. (Even though, I have to admit, they creep me out a little bit.)

The blog post includes the pattern, and stepped-out photos for attaching the pieces and hair.

Also be sure to check out Sharon’s patterns for Wybie and the Ghost Girl.

In case you haven’t heard about Coraline, it’s a fantasy/horror novella by British author Neil Gaiman, published in 2002. There was a graphic novel adaptation, published in 2008, and illustrated by P. Craig Russell. The stop-motion animated film was directed by Henry Selick, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2009. [Historical facts per Wikipedia]

Now, unrelated to Coraline, but related to Neil Gaiman…have you seen the footage of the Minnesota Public Radio interview with Neil Gaiman, where they call Mythbuster’s Adam Savage and he does a short singing stint in the voice of Gollum?  According to theonering.net, it “contains so many different brands of geekery it might shut down the internet.” You simply must see.

Padme and Leia Barbie Costumes.

STOP THE PRESSES!!!

A whole cartload of AWESOME was just unloaded over at Burdastyle. I have seen some AWFUL barbie costumes in my time, and to be fair, most of them are made my small children so I shouldn’t be so judgemental. But I am.

These are the things that Star Wars Barbie dreams are made of.

Burdastyle community member Morgan (lanternwaste33) has uploaded her stash of Padme Amidala and Princess Leia Barbie costumes.

The accuracy, detail and craftsmanship are certainly worth a look!

(Not to mention the pretty pretty dresses *fangirl squee*)

If you’ve got a chance you should also check out Morgan’s studio on Burdastyle She and her sister Allison have made some awesome people sized Star Wars Costumes too.

Flickr Pool: Marvin Night-time Embroidery.

In my household reading the Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy is a rite of passage. It’s lexicon is the language of our everyday social interactions within the house. It’s a beautiful thing.

It’s very confusing for visitors.

So looking in the Flickr pool for today’s feature, there was only one choice for me.

Amazingly LadyHazard has never read the books, but she certainly captured the spirit (or lack thereof) of our favourite paranoid android. Its a beautiful piece (but just a slight warning, her photostream is awesome… but NSFW!… there you were warned, now go there anyway :-) )

Awesome work LadyHazard

Crazy 4 Cult in Los Angeles, July 8-30

Crazy 4 Cult posterI know I mentioned it in my last post, but I thought folks might be interested in knowing a little more about Crazy 4 Cult, an annual art show exploring the intersection of fandom and fine art.

Held at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles, the show features pieces ranging from paintings to hand-sewn plushies. What all the art has in common, though, is a deep love for the movies that have made a mark on our cultural conscious, from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to The Shining.

This summer, the show celebrates its fifth year, as well as the publication of Crazy 4 Cult: Cult Movie Art. A 176-page book featuring some of the best art from the show’s previous years, it also boasts an introduction by filmmaker/pop culture connoisseur Kevin Smith.

Crazy 4 Cult 5 opens with a reception on Friday, July 8, 7-11pm, and runs through July 30. The galley also hosts a book signing for Crazy 4 Cult: Cult Movie Art on July 10 at 12pm, with many of the featured artists in attendance.

If anyone gets a chance to check out this awesome show, drop us a line and let us know what wowed you!

And with that, dear readers, I am officially off for summer vacation! My husband and I are traveling to Southeast Asia for the first time ever, and I’ll be gone for most of the month. So, everyone have a great July (and a happy 4th to all U.S. Geek Crafters), and I’ll see you soon!

Flickr Pool: Royal Tenenbaums Pillows

Royal Tenenbaums PillowsGrab your goggles, because Geek Crafts is taking a dip in the pool…the Flickr Pool!  Each week we’ll be showcasing some of the awesome geek creations made by our Flickr group members.

There are a lot of great crafts floating around the pool right now, and it was tough picking just one to kick off the series. As both an embroiderer and a film nerd, though, I was instantly drawn to Ellen Schinderman’s stitched submission.

This trio of pillows features the lovable losers from Wes Anderson’s film The Royal Tenenbaums, complete with quotes from the narrator. Drop by Ellen’s blog, Schindermania, to check out the backs of the pillows, too, which have fabric correlating to each Tenenbaum child’s personality (you can already see the fuzz from the fur coat backing for Margo’s).

Royal Tenenbaums Pillow MargoIf you want to see the pillows  in person, they’ll be part of the fifth annual “Crazy 4 Cult”  gallery show in Los Angeles, July 8-30. Congratulations, Ellen!

READER SUBMISSION: River Song Plushie

Dr. River SongI love Doctor Who, I love classic Who, new Who, I love Number Ten, and I LOVE Eleven. But the character that has been making the last few seasons spectacular, in my humblest of opinions, is Dr. River Song. She is just hot in all the right ways and cool in all the right ways–and now that we know who she is, I can’t wait to see how things play out.

Rain submitted this awesome River Song Plushie from her MoonyCouture Etsy Shop. They can make you a plushie of ANY human character on the show (and I even spotted a Weeping Angel in there)! They are really cool, and I don’t know how anyone could stand to pick just one!
